Scale used in the video: amzn.to/2oZv7PS
In this video we are checking the stylus tracking force using the digital scale by Neoteck.
In an earlier video we balanced the tonearm and set the stylus tracking force as well as anti-skating. However, it is a good idea to use a digital scale gauge just to make sure your stylus tracking force is set correctly.
The Neoteck Digital Turntable Stylus Force Scale Gauge comes with a 5g calibration weight. We went further and verified that weight with a professional scale. It did measure exactly 5 grams so it is safe to say that Neoteck is rather precise. They do mention a .01g error margin which is negligible.

Typical DJ used to abusing the conical stylus. For added safety, especially with Shibata, Micro Line or Ridge, Optimized Contour Contact Line (Soundsmith) etc then a rather more delicate approach is necessary: Rather than dragging your precious stylus diamond till across the scale as seen in the video at 1:48 - 1:58, instead keep your tonearm in the raised position, then locate the stylus tip over the balance arm and then gently lower it onto the balance arm using the tonearm lowering level. If it's not central, then raise the tonearm again with the lever and reposition the balance and repeat until central. This may be time-consuming but ensures that your stylus tip and cantilever are not torn off or damaged and thus ensure your precious vinyl is not damaged either by a misaligned or damaged cantilever and tip. Other than this I congratulate an excellent video-tutorial

@John Michael Richards Exactly, my reaction seeing this? "Ooooouch!" :) Especially good advice when someone gets a delicate high end cartridge, very prone to break or bend the cantilever.

I did it without turning my anti skate to 0 and it read exactly what my tracking force is set to. I’m so glad I bought this device after worrying that I messed up doing my counterweight. Great product👍

Also I have a Dual 1019 What should i set the anti skate to with a Shure M75 Cart? I do not see an entry on Shure literature. thx I set it to 1.25 but not sure how to tell if that is correct. I set tracking force to 2 with this scale.

Great video! I have this same device. My cartridge spec is 2.5 g on this device the 2.5 should read 2.50 correct?

Why would you want to have antisakting at 0 for measuring the weight? at 0 there would be a force on the arm pulling it towards the arm base.
@koettfaers
@koettfaers Жыл бұрын
I don't really know how much the antiskating effects the measurement, but setting the antiskate to 0 does not pull the arm towards the arm base (whatever that means). The skating force is only precent while the needle is inside the groove of a vinyl, and the vinyl is spinning. This force pulls the arm towards the center of the vinyl. That's why you set the antiskating to counter act this force. I dont have very in depth knowledge in this, but you can find alot of in depth knowledge about this, its really not that simple to set it at set value and it's 100% correct, either. Same with needle force and how you measure it. When you measure the needleforce, you want the scale to be at exact height of which the needle is set while playing a record, 2-3mm above the felt of the plate. Different tone arms are balanced differently, in 3 ways i think. The most common is neutraly balanced and the height different doesnt change the needle weight that much. Either way, the point is to set the needle weight, using a scale for example, at its correct value when the needle is at same height as it is while playing an actual record.

Is the section of the scale that the stylus touches, the same thickness of a record? the reason I ask, is because some people say that you should remove the mat before placing the scale on the platter.
@DineshC

Good point Maxwell , i think we can get good reading from scale without mat. so its matches the record thickness as well .

Why do you put the antiskate to zero? It shouldn't make any difference as gravity works nevertheless. Also there are some turntables where antiskate is fixed and you can't put it to zero and then measure pressure.

Just thinking out loud here, Is there any reason to balance your tonearm if you have a tracking force scale? Could you not just place it on the scale and adjust until the desired tracking force is reached? I completely understand if you're setting tracking force without a scale, then balancing and using the counterweight is going to get you your tracking force amount. Just curious if anyone skips the step and goes straight to the scale without balancing?

With old turntables the small spring between your dial and counter weight becomes weak causing it to be off. I just got one of these and I have three 1970's turntables only one of the three measured correctly

Any suggestions for a record player that doesn’t have an adjustable anti-skate? I am having a lot of trouble getting my arm calibrated properly - the arm drifts to the right after being released

Do you need to set to 0 to test? I just wanted to test what the current force is so I figure test then redo the force if its off?

If you calibrate the meter and the arm balanced, then measure tracking force and it is close but like .10 or .20 out do you then adjust the tracking force dial or the weight on the back of the tone arm to make it exact? Or does it matter.

I have one of these and when I do a gentle tap on the cartridge after I've lowered it, it always increases the weight by 0.1g which is quite a lot!

For more basic tip shapes like conical and elliptical 0.1g is really negligible.

The calibration weight at 1:05 is to measure tracking force greater than 5 grams like the Crosley Cruiser record player. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJ2foa-A0LnUfJc.html

Why do you set antiskatig to zero..?
@NiiOnLood
@NiiOnLood 11 ай бұрын
Because to avoid stylus dragging accidentally on the scale. No moving surface, no skating force, no compensating antiskating needed.

1. The dust mat is to protect the platter from dust, you remove it and place your vinyl directly on to the platter, it stops the vinyl attracting the dust off the platter. Either that or your going to do some scratching or a DJ where you use a 'slip mat' to protect the vinyl or just to allow the vinyl to 'slip' DJ's DGAF about sound quality. 2. If you knew anything of vinyl, or a DJ you wouldn't have a 'digital' copy of Daft Punk, that defeats the object of vinyl, they probably recorded the CD digital recording onto vinyl, completely wasting the point of vinyl. 3. If you put the scales on the slip/dust mat, it won't work correctly as some of the force is taken up with compression of the mat. 4. You made the mistake of assuming the cheaper scales were exactly the same as the more expensive, but almost exactly the same Pro-Ject scales, they aren't the same, your Wan Hang Lo cheapy chinese scales only have 3 digit LCD display, meaning they are only good to a 10th of a gram, it doesn't sound that important but by virtue of the fact you are weighing your needle and not just winging it, you are obviously bothered about accuracy when they want 2.8g you don't know if you're at 2.809g or 2.800g You should have spent another $10 and got the more accurate Pro-Ject scales that have 4 digit LCD display and are accurate to 100th of a gram so now you know it's dead on 2.800 or 2.809

Hi greats video. I'm new to using the gauge,and have a question. My ideal stylus weight I've been advised is 2.5 grams. Would this read 2.05 or 2,5 on the gauge. Probably a silly question but like I say I'm new to this. Thanks.

Depends on your cartridge - ranges from 2-5 grams. Google the name of your cartridge with “tracking weight” or look at a user manual or the box.
