Filmed in 1967 from the driver’s cab of a Diesel Multiple Unit train, the journey from Skipton to Carlisle via Settle, Ribblehead (the viaduct still had two tracks), Ais Gill Summit and Appleby. We call at all stations that were then open.
We pass steam-hauled freights and the southbound diesel-hauled Thames - Clyde Express.

My great grandfather was a foreman on the building of this railway . At that time he lived with his wife and children then settled near Kirkby Steven then Appleby. His name was James Ladds.

Today 5th April 21....I was at Ribblehead via duct only yesterday. Great footage. I have been up and down Settle / Carlisle railway many times so this was quite familiar to me although many things wouldn't be around now. I wonder if the Station Pub / Hotel at Ribblehead was such back in 67 ? There is a nice shot of it but no advertising could be seen. There is a brief shot of the southbound road next to the line showing a Chimney stack and buildings right next to the road....The next time I'm there I'll see if it still exists. I was positively riveted to my seat watching this....really enjoyed it, Thanks for uploading.

Just Superb !! So much Railway history lost forever on this line but at least its still in use and has a number of ex Midland Railway signal boxes that remain on the route.

A brilliant film of the S&C from 50 years ago. The look of the railway has not changed much since, which is very unusual. The stations have mostly been restored and look much the same, but in better condition. The track is now cwr and there are many fewer sidings. Fortunately the stone walls (instead of fencing) have survived and been repaired. There is some tree and bush growth on embankments and cuttings now (until the 60s the slopes were 'burnt off' to keep them grassed) but not as much as on most railways in 2018. This 1967 film will be part of the historical record of the S&C.

Ribblehead Viaduct is now a tourist attraction in its own right! Ais Gill signalbox now stands at Butterley Station in Derbyshire. Garsdale turntable is now at Keighley.

Was pals with one of the signalmen at How and Co's siding. Once spent the morning with him in the box when there were about only three trains a day the early 80s

David Jenkinson,a pionner in finescale layouts, built two examples of this line, the town names were changed, in both cases, first was marthwaite,, he won the 1966 railway modeller cup, then came garsdale road,inspired very close, in dent, now i have 54 yeras old, ,iam a railway modeller too, but today I have those railway modeller magazines, that purchased my father in those years, david and other enthusiasts like brian fayle,,with his beautiful layout harlyn junction, were like teachers for me in this hobbie, as I saw those articles when Iwas a child, very good video, regards from buenos aires, argentina

Lovely to see this. My grandad was the signalman at Low House in the 1940s and 50s. Memories of holidays there as a young child. I remember that you could smell a steam train coming before you could see it, which still makes no sense to me but that's how it worked!

Came here for the nostalgia and prep for a steam tour later in the year (2019). Felt very strange to see familiar sights I'd never been to, since way back now I was part of a small team producing the S&C in 1920 guise for Train Simulator, and as I did the rolling stock there was nothing to be gained by visiting the real place, so I didn't! Thanks for posting!

Thank you so much for posting this - it is a real journey into the past for me. My uncle was a track worker in this area and the family lived in the Railway Cottages next to the line in Long Marton near the viaduct. It's from here I have my memories of working steam on British railways, and I remember using Long Marton station. I think Network Rail turned up at 5 o'clock one Sunday morning in the 1990's to remove the platforms, making damn' sure it couldn't open again.

I still remember the same DMU "cab ride" run from Skipton to Carlisle just before the mass closure of the village stations....what wonderful memories here, the stations, signal boxes, signals themselves. The modern railway is just not the same. Many thanks for this.

Great stuff. Like my colleague, David Hardie, below I too drive the route and really enjoy it. Enjoyed seeing the now gone signal boxes and sidings and placebo exactly where they are. The lack of trees at Low House is interesting, compared to now!

Fantastic piece of history. I remember in about 1960 travelling from Bolton on a BR Excursion made up of at least 6 cars. It stopped to pick up at Darwen and Blackburn before stopping for a visit to Carlisle. The return included a run down Shap and another stop at Morecambe Promenade. This film makes up for me not being behind the Driver at the front. Thank.

Many thanks for uploading this film. My Dad used to walk the 4 miles from Dent Station to the village just before the war to visit relatives during his school holidays. We retraced his steps about 20 years ago on a visit to England. Very pretty countryside and we'll do it again one day, being natives of Yorkshire.

I came to Australia by myself in 1970 age 19, still living here and no intention of leaving. Mother and Father ended up living in Cornwall. The whole family tree originated in Yorkshire, they lived in Skipton/Grassington/Hebden/Dent. Family name Dinsdale.

Some wonderful views of the line as it was, including in & around Skipton at the start. The Colne line closed when I was little, so I have no memories of it like it is shown. Likewise for many of the old signal boxes & stations now gone....

The turntable at Garsdale used to have a stockade around it to prevent locos not being able to turn due to strong winds in the area. The stockade was built after a gust of wind caught a loco and spun it around like a top (as immortalised by the good Reverend Audrey in one of his tales).

Yes, I have read of the wind-blown turntable at Garsdale, and of how they had to shovel ashes into the turntable pit to stop it. One of the problems of using old film material is that the shots are often too short to allow one to say everything (or even anything!) that one would like to say about what is shown on the film.

May I correct you - the Settle & Carlisle route shown has NOT "gone" but after a very long, strong campaign was not axed. Of course the generation of diesel unit from which this was filmed no longer run, except on Heritage lines.

I drove the S&C for 15 years 2003-2018 when I was at freightliner heavy haul, I miss it very much. The Cornish mainline has to do for now.

Tell me, if a business, let's say a supermarket, doesn't make enough money from a store in an area that is fully developed (ie no major house building going on in the immediate vicinity) to cover its costs what does it do? That's right the store gets closed, but isn't that, by your logic just a waste of resources? The same was true for the railways before nationalisation, they had to make a profit and stations or lines that did not make enough to cover their costs were targeted for closure. When nationalisation came along, the first wave of closures were the stations and routes that the big 4 were looking at cutting. The next phase was the rationalisation of the network by removing duplicated lines and lines that could not earn enough to justify retention.

Hello Alan - I hope you have already but you do realise that these films should be lodged with the National Railway Museum? They're a wonderful record, not only of the trains and railways but the local scenery of that time - and they're in colour. They should be stored and preserved, no question about it. If you haven't already, I do hope you consider it. Thanks.

Wonderful stuff. I also learnt that gypsum can be made from coal smoke. Seeing all the wagons and it never clicked ! All this rubbish about coal being a pollutant, it was almost completely free of pollutants by the time all the processes on it were finished.

"These first generations DMUs where chosen to have vacuum brakes installed instead of the more efficient air brake system so they could haul single van or carraiges - but seldom did !" Not true . I was a Guard on the Eastern region in the 1980s and we had at least two or three turns every day that were a Class 101 first generation DMU (or a Cravens 105) with a mail van attached on the rear.The memory is fading now I `m pretty definately sure that one was an late afternoon / early evening Ipswich - Peterborough DMU which ran Mon- Sat with a mail van attached .The others I`m a bit sketchy about with the memory .Possibly a Cambride -Peterborough and a Norwich - Cambridge DMU . The practice only ceased around 1987 when the first generation DMUs were replaced by new Class 150 Sprinter trains! (on the Eastern region). I believe the Met-Cam 101s were sent to the Manchester area and the Cravens 105s for scrap?

Sam Green The DMU that ran from Leicester to Peterborough often dropped off an SPV at Stamford, then after being loaded/unloaded it would then be picked up by a DMU to Peterborough a day or so later. This practice stopped in the early 1980s when the yard and signalbox at Stamford were closed.

The position of the perforation suggest that this was shot on Super-8 film, a format which would have been introduced just two years before.

Long Preston stopped at Box Rule book 'Section clear junction obstructed' These Absolute Block systems had track circuits on the overlaps of junctions to prevent signals being cleared

Meant Hellifield, Probably caused by freight on adjacent line. The Bobby (Signalman) should probably called the driver up to the box with a flag. but it was recognised that a hand out of the window would do the job.Great vid, think i got that right

Not true ! I was a guard on the Eastern Region in 1980s and we had a few regular turns with a DMU with a van attached on the rear .Usually a CCT van for mailbags . Most common on Ipswich to Peterborough .Norwich or Cambridge to Peterborough.

We did say "SELDOM", not "Never." I really don't recall seeing a First Generation, Vacuum Braked DMU hauling anything. But then I wasn't riding around your area at all the hours of the day you would have been.

Sam Green So was I Sam. I was a conductor guard at Peterborough and we conveyed “ vanfits “ to Spalding,Stamford Cambridge and Norwich. Sometimes if we had two units we ended up with two vans

At 1 min into the video, aqueduct carring the Leeds Liverpool Canal, the appears to an automatic semaphore signal. The signal plate is a white rectangle with a black horizontal line. Anybody got a clue about this?
