Settling With Power Vortex Ring State Helicopter Training Video Online Ground School
Avoid Settling With Power Vortex Ring State. If you always keep the wind off your nose, as in this picture right here, and the turbulence behind you, you're never probably going to get in to settling with power. Settling With Power Vortex Ring State is one of the most important things you need to be aware of as a helicopter pilot today. I'm Kenny Keller, the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School, and author of the Amazon bestseller Helicopter Check-Ride.
First you need to know a simple definition for Settling With Power Vortex Ring State, and the simple definition is settling in your own down wash. It's exactly what it is. You're settling in your own disturbed air. There are three things that you absolutely have to commit to memory. These are the three things, if combined together, they can get you in to Settling With Power Vortex Ring State, which are ready descent, 300 feet per minute or greater, using 20 to 100% of your available power, and airspeed less than effective translational lift, or ETL, as we call it. Again, you must have all three of those things combined together to get into settling with power. There are three situations conductive to settling with power, three situations that pilots commonly put themselves in. Number one, attempting to hover above the hovering ceiling. Number two, attempting to hover out of ground effect without precise attitude control, and three, a steep power approach airspeed near zero. If you find yourself in this situation, settling with power, you can increase forward airspeed to get out of it, you can lower collective to get out of it, you can do both, altitude permitting. You could perform an autorotation to get out of it, altitude permitting, you could fly sideways and even fly backwards to get out of it.
Remember, ready descent, 300 feet per minute or greater, using 20 to 100% of power, airspeed less than ETL. Those three things combined together, you can get in to settling with power. Take any one of the three away, and you're not in settling with power. Common situations people put themselves in, attempting to hover above the hovering ceiling of the aircraft, hovering out of ground effect without precise attitude control, and a high power approach airspeed near zero. How can you get out of it? You can fly in to clean air, sideways, backwards, whichever direction to get in to clean air, you can lower collective altitude permitting, and or you could gain airspeed and lower collective simultaneously.
So those are some of the basic elements of settling with power that you absolutely have to commit to memory. You have to know how you get in to it, how to recognize it, and the best thing to do is just to avoid it and not get yourself in that position in the first place.
I hope that helps, please give us a like and a share, leave your comments down below, and if you'd like some help with helicopter check-ride preparation and would like to check out our helicopter online ground school, click the link above, beside, below, or on the face of this video. Since I was trained in Canada, we differentiate between settling with power and vortex ring state. Vortex ring state being what you are describing in the video and settling with power meaning you do not have sufficient power to arrest the rate of decent while coming in for a landing. i.e., coming in to hot when you are heavy. You are not in a vortex ring state, its just you run out of collective to reduce your rate of decent and therefore have a hard landing. You are in no way, shape or form in a vortex ring state though. Nice clear explanation in the video, good job.

Kitenomad, I think you are confusing "Settling With Power" sometimes known as Vortex Ring and "Power Settling" not having sufficient power to hover!

Dear @@HelicopterGround, how come you're thanking Kitenomad (@65miniman), but don't proceed to correcting your video? If these are two different phenomena, they surely deserve to be described accurately?

The best explanation, I ever heard, was basically the helicopter is free falling through it's own rotor wash, so whichever direction your rotor wash is being blown, you can get into settling with power in that direction, should you maneuver the helicopter in that direction

According to the pubs the word is "conducive" to settling with power. Also, attempting to hover OGE without maintaining constant "altitude" control.

Apparently the United States is the only country that uses the terms... Settling With Power & Vortex Ring State ...interchangeably... but I'm having a hard time finding sources that describe the differences between the two in a complete, concise manner. The best I could find is bits & pieces of info from a multitude of sources. So my understanding is this... Settling With Power is when the pilot tries to do a maneuver which demands more power than what the helicopter can produce, like... trying to land on a mountain top hovering at the helicopter's hover altitude limit, flying at ceiling altitude limit, flying in high density altitude, landing with too fast of an airspeed & there is not enough power to arrest the helicopter's Kinetic Energy, the helicopter is just too heavy for takeoff, or the density altitude is greater at the landing site than the takeoff site, resulting in the helicopter being too heavy, & there is not enough power to arrest the helicopter's Kinetic Energy.

The more I see about Helicopters and training, the more danger I see, whats with this part up top over the body, that can actually, if moved to far, can strike the drive shaft region??? Yikes, I was stunned hearing about VRS, then about the tail thing, now this....woa, simulation helicopter flying only for this guy! Comment?

Excellent video! A couple of questions: (1) Can carrying a heavy payload (like an Abrams tank, for example) increase the likelihood of settling with power? (2) Can a sudden downdraft while hovering (such as those from catabatic winds in mountainous terrain) trigger settling with power in conditions otherwise conductive to it?
@HelicopterGround
@HelicopterGround 9 жыл бұрын
agentorange153 Yes, the higher you get neat the max gross weight of the aircraft the more chance you can get into settling with power. And yes, turbulent air is another factor, thanks for commenting!

+Helicopter Online Ground School Thanks for the timely answer! I think I'll use this in my second novel: my characters will be flying a chopper high in the mountains (avalanche rescue), take the last load of casualties aboard, take off, encounter a downdraft from the Chinook wind, get into settling with power and crash (they'll survive the crash, but they'll have to go down to the medical camp on foot -- in VERY hostile terrain!) Or maybe I won't use settling with power, maybe I'll make it a main transmission failure -- I haven't decided yet.

+Helicopter Online Ground School My first novel is titled Higher Than an Eagle: A Wings of Mercy Novel (author name is Dennis Kitainik), but it doesn't have any helicopters in it -- only a Queen Air and a parachute. The second novel (which I'm writing now) will be called Roses in the Snow: A Wings of Mercy Novel.

Generally any hazardous condition can be amplified or easier to get into with the 4Hs. That is high,hot,heavy,or humid all cause the main rotor system to be operating at an higher AOA which creates larger vortices more drag and more torque. So the engine and tail rotor have to work harder than if those factors weren't there.

Settling With Power is now called Vortex Ring State!
@simonsmith8974
@simonsmith8974 2 жыл бұрын
In the US but my understanding is in other countries like Canada they make a distinction. - Vortex ring state means entering disturbed air space created by helicopter- solution Vuichard method - Settling with power means inertia of the aircraft is too great to prevent the aircraft hitting the ground. In VCR raising collective would have no benefit since the helicopter blades are stalling. In settling with power raising collective would impede the descent but not sufficiently to prevent crashing to the ground. 2 different circumstances necessitate different actions from the pilot
