Seve not having his own way against Greg Norman in this 'Battle of the Giants' during the Semi final of the Alfred Dunhill Cup in October 1988 at St Andrews.
Seve was exhausted after a fantastic season and struggled to maintain his brilliant form.
I am afraid the coverage ends with Seve + Greg hitting to the 17th in dense fog. Absolute farce! Norman shot 67 to Seve's 69. Seve must have birdied 17 or 18 and Norman parred in. We will never know unless someone out there has an idea what happened next.
Ireland beat Australia in the Final. Spain came 3rd.
One thing to notice is Greg's caddy... the very young, infamous Steve Williams who went on to caddy for Tiger. At one time, he was New Zealand's 2nd highest paid 'sportsman'!
He now carries Adam Scott's bag, the current Masters Champion. He must doing something right.

When golf was golf, shot making blades woods and early metals.... brilliant. None of this modern 400yds drive crap, should make pros all use blades and smaller heads....then you'll get the best golfers winning. Good stuff this

Never have I ever been star struck but once. I watched Seve play at St Mellion in the mid 90's. He walked off the final green and I opened my mouth to speak to him. It just stayed open in awe. He literally had an aura around him. I was about 13 and I still feel that feeling of awe when I watch him swing an iron.

I used to keep a diary in the late 1980s. I was a teenager who played golf off a low handicap.. I clearly remember logging Seve's wins throughout 1988. The Scandinavian Open was the one I remember the most for some reason. Also, of course I saw him win The Open at Lytham. I even wore a blue Slazenger jumper in his honour.

Couldn't agree more. When you see McIlroy or Justin Rose interviewed, you can tell instantly that they have zero charm, personality or charisma. Just dull, boring and money obsessed. Personally, I don't think the corporate sponsorship that is all over golfers shirts should be allowed, as money, like with many other sports, has ruined the character of players. It's all they are caring about these days...

Political correctness and a sport of rugged individualists shouldn't mix it seems, but I do see PC, driven by $$, creating stasis, and lack of charm. The Tour needs a John Daly type to shake things up.

Real woods, blades for irons, golf balls that had tons of spin on them...you had to have real talent back then compared to now.

I wonder technically why Seve was a bit wild off the tee his swing looks beautiful and on a great plane

Seve was only a wild driver at the beginning & end of his career. In his prime period (c. ‘83 to ‘89) he was known as a very good driver, and one of the longest.

It's crazy. Galleries with at least 2x more than a normal PGA event, 10x more than a LIV event in the 80s and here we are in 2023 and less people are watching but the players are getting payed 100s of millions just to play on a tour. The game is gone

There is just something about Norman that irritates. Excuse the crude metaphor, but he seems like a fella who thinks his sh-t doesn't stink. I can stand some arrogance with greatness, but he is the antithesis of Nicklaus in big time Major moments...always went from shark to minnow

A man who is willing to work with a murderous regime (Saudi Arabia) for the most pathetic of reasons i.e. cash, and to back stab an organization that made him who he is (the PGA). Ya, I think my comment was appropriate dude. End of story

But yes his talent was breathtaking. Just an amazing golfer, frankly, as talented as just about all the legends, but he lacked that little something extra that Jack, Tiger, Arnold, Hogan, etc had....the unflinching will to win in huge moments. Legend, yes, but he will be remembered as much for his epic collapses as his talent. That's life

@@Bch2025 For well over 30 years the US, Japan and half of Europe built their economies by doing business with the Saudi's in buying their precious oil. China, India and South Korea soon followed. The Saudi's are diversifying their interests into other areas away from oil because oil doesn't last forever, hence the liv golf tour. To single out one guy who's simply doing business, as he's always done for many years now, and not even consider anything that has happened in the past on who else has been working with the Saudi's (i.e. pretty much everyone else), is just you being a bit silly and misguided.

Man that is the same ol lame argument. Use it in another context and you see how silly it is. "Other people commit crimes so what's the big deal if I do it?" Does that work in court?! Did that argument work during the Nuremberg trails?! "My government was doing it so I just did what they were doing." Ya, that argument got them hanged with the rest. Just because others are doing evil it doesn't justify your evil. And to single out one man? Are you not aware that norman is the single driving force for the current split in golf. Norman has had a pathological hatred for the pga for years and years, in fact, he tried something similar to this in the 1990s but Palmer and Nicklaus nixed it. Maybe those men had stronger moral fiber than today's players. Please think for yourself instead of spouting that lame argument you heard from someone else
