I don’t know how people there feel about second hand clothes. But I love a quality used garment instead of cheap new.

When we both worked full-time we lived off one income and used the other income to pay off the mortgage early. Now both of us work part-time and have decided to do the same challenge for 2022 and live on one income again. Although the income is smaller due to working part-time, we are now empty-nesters and have finished all of the more costly DIY we needed to do to get things set up for the next chapter of our lives. I have done the budget for 2022 and am quite excited and surprised at how much we will be able to save next year. I am a little nervous about prices rising and really hope we won't have to spend any of the money not already allocated to a budget category. We could save a bit more than one income if we don't need to spend extra due to price rises! I always recommend young couples wanting to start a family that they give living off one income a go, and also to people wanting to retire early. I’m challenging myself in 2022 to make double mortgage payments each month with the extra money going towards principal. I’ll be doing this by doing a low spend 2022 (some months will be no spend) I buy quality clothes second hand and am mindful when grocery shopping. I’m very fortunate as a nurse I can work unlimited over-time. Plus I’m very mindful with all money purchases.

Update: me and husband sat down for the first time in 17years, a few days ago and talk through our budget for 2022..... It was amazing!!! After 17 years of being in charge everyday of money, it has lifted such weight off me and made me excited. I haven't managed to save for 4 years but this year I am going to do the penny and pound challenge. We hope that the penny challenge will pay Christmas and the pound challenge to pay for a trip abroadfor our 20th anniversary in july 2024. This is all thanks to your channel, giving me confidence to share the responsibility (I was always scared of husbands laid back live for today manta =spend now) but showing him your videos and talking about age of retirement for us (only 34 years old currently) really helped. We always did the coppers into a jar before Covid. They usually added up to enough for a takeaway treat between Christmas & New Year.

I get my son to pay me £20 per month which I am stashing away so that it can go towards a deposit on his first home, car, etc. He doesn't know this by the way! Being frugal and wise with our finances feels empowering. Love your channel, Jane.

Great tips for savings challenges Jane :) Now that I don't use cash so much anymore I check my bank account at least once a week and transfer any odd amounts into my savings. So if I have $1132.46 I will transfer the $32.46 into my savings. I did this for a year back in 2016 and saved $3500 CAD enough for a new bike!! I was quite pleased with myself and continue this practice every year. If your budget is super tight you can always just save the cents and even that can add up over time without you really missing it. I also do the pantry challenge on a regular basis just to make sure we use up older items.

The second hand furniture is such a savings! And it is often better made and I’m so happy with my home.

I have done a few of these over the years. I did a year of saving £2 coins and ended up with nearly a thousand pounds by the end of the year.Years ago we use to have a gallon whiskey bottle that we saved change in. I have bought second hand furniture all my married life. After watching today’s video I am going to try all 7 challenges over the next few months. I will let you know how I get on.

I am 5 months into a no / low spend challenge - I have saved so much money - and I enjoy the challenge so not missing all the things I used to waste my money on - especially clothes - I have more than enough to get me through the year. Great ideas to encourage sensible money practices, Jane. Our married life has been filled with second hand objects. Most of our cars were second hand. Our computers are all reconditioned. Our furniture mostly came from relatives as did our knick-knacks. For example, my sofa is a Lawton styled Koehler brand sofa from the 1930's. We got it from my husband's grandmother, who had bought it used in the 1950's from the Salvation Army shop. It had a damaged leg that needed repairing and we recovered it with avocado green upholstery. That was back in the the late 70's. For some reason it has never gone out of fashion. When we moved three years ago I was going to get a new sofa. Some friends hoped I would not get rid of that piece. The upholstery looks the same as the day it was recovered.

In 2007 when I was starting my Traveling Tea Party side business I went every charity shop within an hour from my home and built my tea cup/saucer, tea pots & dessert dishes - beautiful English China. I've found nice clothes at the shops.

Wonderful Goals. My family is High Dollar. We do our own way. Giving to family has been one sided. We were always the ones giving. The Outlaws never gave. Now, the Outlaws have changed the game. If a family member is 18 and under, they receive a gift. Funny, how they are the ones the family listens to. So, our budget will reflect more savings now. Yay! We are gonna celebrate in January from now on, the gifts, money, or gift cards, will be purchased at a bigger discount. We will do this every month after a Holiday or special day. The same rule for birthdays, 18 years and under. Hope this helps someone, rethink the peer pressure.

I was laughing thinking of the pantry challenge, I think I have a little supermarket in my garage with all the cleaning products I own and a little beauty salon with all my beauty products!!!!We put the coins in a jar (orange and yellow coins), I try to save Vinted sells in a bank account ;). Yes, it's a no spend January for me also. I've more than enough...and I'm giving serious consideration to selling some bits...instead of being stuck in the attic, all in mint condition. I recently received 3 large black bags of really lovely clothes, a lady doing a clear out. Well, mixed up in the bag were brand new clothes, which were too big for me. I put up an advertisement at the supermarket, and I got some buyers just before Christmas. We are all learning how to "make do"...tightening it up, well over due.

We should all buy "Preloved" items from our list of things we really need. It's fun to look for exactly what you want. It may take months or years but you can usually find that specific item, eventually. It's very satisfying.😊

I am going to do several no buy months starting in January. I am also going to do the pantry challenge and the drop it challenge. Actually, I started doing the drop it thing when I began to write my budget down and realized all of the subscriptions that I don't use or don't need. So far I will be saving $760 in 2022. Great tips I’ve done most of these over the 8 years that I’ve been extra frugal. It has got me through to my retirement , thanks once again. I did the penny/zero out & 52 weeks challenge this year and was able to pay off my car. I also do 3/4 no spend months a year. Trying to improve our finances each year is a challenge in it's self 😀😃 Happy New Year!!

Since 1st January 2021 I put £25 cash in a jar every week for the year (when I could afford to), so now I have a nice lump sum towards a holiday this year. 😊

The only big items I always buy second hand are automobiles. I live out in the rough area of the country and can't imagine spending all that money on a pristine new vehicle to mud it down the pot holed lane.

Love all the savings challenges and other ideas. Most months we don't ...... I almost did not tell the truth there...... we have one or 2 take out meals most months. That is going to be changing this coming year, just for crappy McDonalds for Hubby and myself is about $27 Canadian. I'll be making up some burger patties and keeping them in the freezer along with some buns and frozen fries. This will chop the cost to probably $5 and won't take long to whip up even after a long day at work. Once the weather warms up a wee bit here (having highs of around -40C with the windchill lately) I'll be going to the thrift stores more often and watching for free items on FB freecycle for my area more for items I'm looking for. Have started doing a few other things around the house to save a few pennies here and there. Turned the hot water tank down a little, have the thermostat down one degree lower than other years. Have made my budget for 2022 and unless there is a catastrophe I will be sticking to it. Have a wonderful day.

I've done a one Euro Challenge. After 1 year I had 400 Euros👍👍. That was very nice for the summerholidays.

I can be frugal but a no spend month seems a big ask to start with so I am going to have a no spend day a week and then build up to a no spend week, then try to build up to a longer no spend. I actually enjoy buying second hand and love finding things on my 'look out for list' it may take longer but amazing when a thing we have been hoping for is found! It makes my heart sing when I find a piece of second hand china which matches a set we have and really love but is incomplete.

When kids were younger, we,d go to the budget movies once a month. Shared a popcorn (they'd each get a brown lunch bag to put their popcorn in) and bring in bottle waters with flavoring( i.e. sneak in). As a single mom I had to save money as I could. When Netflix came along, we had movie nights at home and I occasionally paid the $4.95 for the new releases once or twice a month.

I frequently look at Goodwill and other secondhand stores for items that I need before I buy brand new. In the past I have done the coins challenge but I use my debit card mostly now so I don’t accumulate much change anymore

Thanks for the great ideas! I transfer my cash back bonuses from credit cards into an investment account. I try to maximize those bonuses by using the credit cards for everything. Of course, we completely pay off the credit cards each month.

My husband and I furnished almost our entire house with second hand furniture. I've also gotten some really nice designer handbags second hand for a fraction of the cost new. This year I'm giving up my monthly manicure and pedicure visits and doing my own. So that's my "drop it" for now. 😁

I've done variations of the nickel & dime & 1$ challenge. At the end of the month, any money left from any budget area immediately gets put aside as savings and all change goes into a tin bank that I'll save up, usually 6 month or a year, then that goes into savings. I think I may want to try some type of pantry (food) challenge. I forget what I have to work with already for meals sometime, I could do better saving grocery funds that way. We have beem working to remodel our home for 25 years using a motto borrowed from our pastor when building a school, "on our knees and pay as we go."The school buildings were built debt free.

I zone in on my weak areas. Last year I cut way back on eating out and used store shopping. Stuck to special family birthday dinners out and used necessities. It worked great! All year my husband and I save all our coin change in a jar. At the end of the year we deposit it into an interest bearing savings account for our grandchildren. Every week, I take the dollar bills and five dollar bills I have received in change and put them away in a tin. I have no idea how much I’ve saved over the past year but I’m going to keep going till something comes along…like our trip to Europe we hope for sometime. My husband doesn’t know about this stash so it will be a good surprise. We have practiced no spend months and downsizing and it really does alter one’s attitude toward what is essential and what can be put on the waiting list. Thanks for your ideas. I have done the £2 coin challenge previously, saving every £2 coin I was given in change over a couple of years. I counted it up a couple of months ago and there was over £450 in it! I have done many variations of the no spend challenge and I feel the biggest benefit is not just saving the money but that it teaches you so much about yourself and your motivation to spend. For example, during my first no spend challenge I found that I used shopping as a way to separate my workday from my evening at home as a form of decompression. I was stopping for some little item (a soda, magazine or some small grocery item I had forgotten on the weekly shop). Walking around the store helped me relax and de-stress before going home. Now I listen to an audiobook on the way home as a way of transitioning from work to home. I've always saved my loose change in a jar and turn it in before our yearly vacation. There always seems to be nearly 200$ by the time we exchange it for cash. Looking forward to your videos in2022!

Great savings challenges. My dishwasher broke a couple of months ago and I’ve stayed strong and not charged a new one. Been tempted a few times after washing the dishes for the fourth time that day. At the end of the months what’s left in my envelopes is going to be out towards a new dishwasher fund.

We have what's called Council Cleanup where you put your junk on the footpath. And the council take it away. Half of our house is furnished from council cleanups. Most people are happy for you to take their stuff so it doesn't go to landfill. We recently got a coffee machine that retails for $500. I got a large dining room table and eight chairs. Painted them Shabby chic style and it's our patio dining furniture.. Book case, lamp, bedside table, chest of drawers, side table, Barbie doll house, Barbie Ferrari, Barbie campervan, Other toys, Outside garden furniture, so many things. If We need something I look with an eagle eye and wait until someone discards it. I also only pick up really good quality, well made, as good as new things. I'm currently waiting for a good plank of wood to finish a garden bench that I'm making. People say our home is beautifully eclectic and shabby chic. That is the style I'm going for. And it costs me nothing and there is so much craftsmanship in many of the things I find.

I save my 2 pound coins, usually get around 150.00 a year. The other thing I do is, any loyalty cards ie, Co op builds up into a case amount, when I use those funds I put the cash away that have not used . Tesco club card do cheaper prices for card herself, so same thing, take the money and put it aside. Happy New Year!

Another way to save a bundle is to pay off all your credit card debt as quickly as possible, and then use the cash envelope system for weekly essentials. That is the biggest savings in the long run and really helps to trim spending on a daily basis.

The challenges are good suggestions, and I am pleased to say I have done many of them. I am going to try to do more months of "No spend challenge." I have only tried a couple of weeks of no spend and found I did save money as well as reduced the stress of grocery shopping. Thanks again for sharing the challenges for 2022.

I like these ideas Jane, and have already done some of them. The No Spend Challenge is almost a constant for me, simply because I cannot afford, and don't want to buy, non- essential things at the moment. I did the Penny Challenge with $1 coins back in 2018 and when my mother died towards the end of that year it came in very handy for transport costs for both myself and my son to go to the funeral (she lived in a different State from us). I did the Pantry Challenge earlier this year and spent very little on food for 2 weeks, just buying fresh vegetables and fruit. I am going to do another of these soon. I could also do the drop-it challenge and not buy sparkling water which I love. I'll think about that one 🙂 because here in Australia we can return empty cans and plastic and glass drink bottles for a 10 cents refund per item, so that would be shrapnel for the One Pound Challenge which I couldn't do otherwise.

Ice tea is easy to make yourself, no need really to buy in a bottle. Better for the enviroment too. Coffee is a luxory these days - omg can't believe how much things hsve changed in such a short time. I

Although I do not save coins as I rarely pay with case I do have a chase bank account that rounds up my purchases and pays me interest on these round up amounts. I am intended to see how much I save in the year. Started this 2 month ago £18.95 so far although I am also on the January no spend challenge so spending this month has been very low. (Only one grocery shop so far in January).

One way I save money 💰 is to buy second hand shoes from ebay I have had horrible foot issues all my life so I need to find good supportive shoes. I buy almost new Dansko for around $20.00 or $25.00 US dollars and that includes shipping. I also buy New Balance shoes for $10.00, so quite a savings.

I have been doing the no spend month a couple of times a year and also the drop it challenge as well as the pantry challenge. It's amazing how much I have saved for the things that need to be done around the house.

Just rolled coins today ended up with $50.00 bucks. The coins do add up!!!

Last year I set aside every $2 coin from change. It added up to $240, which will go to a lump sum mortgage extra payment, bringing the end date forward by a month. Second hand furniture, if you shop carefully, can get you better made furniture, from solid wood, rather than mass produced, veneered flimsy pieces.

Some very good ideas to take on board for 2022. I love the pennies idea. Covid has had me staying in so afew no spend months were a bonus to our lockdowns. I give my change to charities, I keep any $5 notes I get for birthdays and Christmas. Last year I had over $ 300😁. Cheers to the New Year. 🥂🍾

I am buying much less meat. Not a total vegetarian but found that meat is expensive and I only require just a little. Maybe 2 or 3 small servings a week. I used to waste so much meat!

I have done the progressive daily savings challenge, I have also done the loose change challenge (which worked really well when I was driving taxis), I am currently doing a no spend month challenge, which I will attempt to do until May this year, after a shocking 2021, my debt blew out of all proportion and now I need to regain control of it. My daughter has decided to "sacrifice" some vegetables in the garden to make seedlings to sell (so far she has 60 chilli plants which she will sell for $5 each, 12 Aloe Vera plants which she may sell for $5 or $10 each depending on the size when they sell, she also has too many to count of tomato plants, cucumber plants, lettuce, beans and some pretty flowers, most of which she will sell for between $5 and $10. If they all sell, she will have earned over $1000, not bad for a 13 year old). I have blanched and froze some vegetables from my garden that I couldn't use before they disintegrated. All these little things help make ends meet with the rising costs of groceries. I bought the family a Cricut machine for Christmas, so I am now using that to generate an income too, I will be saving 50% and putting aside 50% for purchasing more stock to keep the income stream flowing. Anyone can live life without spending beyond their means, you just need to be firm with yourself. I now don't generally spend if I can't see how I could make more money from it than what I spend, it has helped me start on my path to be debt free and save enough for my daughter's school fees for next year, before December. That will give me 3 weeks in December to find money for Christmas presents which won't put me back into debt.

Lots of good tips, I especially liked the penny challenge. I buy most items second hand. When I am changing it out - I sell it on, as long as it is in good condition. Now I´m working on my different minibuffers or sinking funds.

Happy new year! Hi there, I am attempting my first no spend January. So far so good. Haha. I also do what I call the shrapnel challenge. I put all my loose change into a tin. I am also saving my 50p’s and £2 coins in a separate tin. I don’t have a specific thing in mind for it but I like the Christmas food shop idea. I love the idea of dropping something. Hi Jane💚 in Australia things are a little different eg we have sales after Xmas and January sales♥️ today I got a make up/toiletries set - 3 pieces at the chemist (normally $40) I got it for $20 today! Several years ago I was using only cash I bought a new computer using just the one dollar bills that I saved. I also, bought a used car with all the change that I had been saving, it was a used car and didn't cost more than a thousand. The car lasted me 3 years so, I got more than my money's worth. I'm now using the card and have more problems with keeping track of my spending. I seem to be buying more things on line because I stay at home so much more now. I need to find a way to better keep track of what i'm spending. Husband wants me to get out more but, I don't I like being at home.

Can you believe that I went on no spend for 10 YEARS ...I only spent the bare minimum because I was so scared of not being able to pay for husband's nursing home in years to come . My children put a stop to that and asked me to start being sensible and take care of myself better . So being frugal to the extreme was not such a good idea after all ...

I have also cancelled Netflix. This month I am attempting to cut my grocery budget by £50 and use this to put towards my credit card - needs to be paid off asap. We have a big whiskey jar that we used to put in copper and 5p’s everyday. Very little gets put in now as majority of places prefer you to use cards. It hasn’t been emptied for 2 years as used to use the money for holiday spending money. There’s probably less than £10 in at moment. Some good suggestion Jane. Might try the penny challenge tho and transfer monthly.

Hi Jane, Great suggestions....but I have two things I am struggling with and perhaps you can help me change how I do it without offending family and friends. People congregate at my home primarily which I love but it does take a toll on the grocery budget. Also I can manage to downsize or cut out my adult gifts for birthdays ect but find that children have different expectations that usually involve money I can't afford but feel guilty not giving. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions?

Does anyone out there have the same challenge as me; I am a saver and my husband is a spender. I am 60, we still have a mortgage, and a very small retirement fund. 😢
