Weird, now as a father, I can recognize that the way she's holding the fork is the same as a child first learning to use one. That must have been intentional and is a nice subtle detail. :)

Jeri Ryan has said that her son (who was a young child at this time) was a big influence on how she played Seven’s facial and body reactions. The back and forth with Neelix makes this scene so memorable.

She is a brilliant actress - the startle response when Neelix moved her chair; her gripping of the fork; her insensitive cataloging of Talaxians; the grimace when swallowing; the dubious looks. Entirely inhabiting her character, I don't think anyone since Spiner exhibited such an amazing performance.

I always liked how Nelix was concerned about the well being of the crew so much that he even reintroduced 7 to eating. The flower was a very nice touch.

It's funny that she holds the fork just like children do when they 1st start using utensils. Either her or the writers were right on top of that one.

"I'll steam your food" > Fucking pan fries it lol

Poor girl hasn't eaten in twenty years, and for her first meal, she is at the mercy of Neelix's culinary skill. :(

That guy is so nice.

Seven of Nine is the ultimate Trek fantasy composite, right? She has the flat affect of Spock and Data. She is a Borg, who, it can be argued are (still) the most elemental threat to and species, and as such serves a foil to the entire Trek philosophical conceit of humanity. And the sex appeal is "set to stun."

I love the innocence of this scene. It always makes me smile.

I like the fact that Nelix was still curtious and pleasant, even as 7 of 9 Was explaining how the borg had assimilated his people, when he could've been other wise.

“Their dense musculature made them excellent drones.” Compliments from the Borg; now that’s a rare sight.

It's generally a bad idea to tell the person whose making your food that your species assimilated his species. It increases the chances that your food might come with that extra saliva spice.

Jeri Ryan had it all, good looks, incredible acting talent. She took to playing Seven of Nine like a duck to water.

Much later, after one of Chakotay and Seven's dates, Chakotay tells Neelix "Thank You!" and walks away. Neelix never figures out what he was being thanked for.

Taken out of context this might sound just a little bit awkward. "That's the way! Right into your mouth... now take it out... keep your mouth closed... and now swallow! You'll get used to it..."

This seen does kind of highlight how awkward eating is, if you break it down to a technical exercise.

You'd think that the Borg would have assimilated the knowledge of how to eat, even if they weren't using it. They know all sorts of stuff they didn't use.

The fact that Neelix thinks steaming and frying food is the same, explains why everybody hates his cooking. It doesn't explain why they never kicked this conman off their ship

Okay, I really gotta ask... What is up with the Neelix hate? He's a lovable goof with heroic and selfless qualities that shine through every so often. He's not Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars, who has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, so why is he constantly compared to him?

This scene where Neelix is trying to figure out what to prepare for Seven(whom has not eaten in a very long time), reminds me of the "Cogenitor" episode of Enterprise where Trip Tucker is trying to look for a movie for the cogenitor whom has not seen a movie ever.

wait, Neelix has dense musculature? I can't recall an episode of voyager where he demonstrated even moderate 'super strength'. The writers totally missed out on using that.

I think I'd rather plug into the wall like Hugh than eat something prepared by Neelix.

The Borg never made sense to me. I mean they're supposed to be technically advanced with computers and hardware but they walk around like 90 year olds and don't seem to understand much for having uploaded countless civilizations. I mean, seven of nine must have seen someone eat in the time she's been on the ship. Surely she understands the concept even if it's a novel experience.

I would imagine that since she has never eaten before, learning to do it properly is going to be a challenge. I mean, if you do it wrong it can even kill you unless there happens to be someone around to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre on you.
