Well, the camera work has definitely gotten better than in 2014! :) But the drills are still the same, did all these with Gordon last year. Wish I could go back to Lake Wellington!

The video just conveys Gordon Hamilton at his best. Of course it helps to have an accomplished sculler perform the drills. Notice that during second pause in the Rock & Row Anne has all her forward angle and her legs are still straight. It seems to me that this accomplishes three things: (1) It shows that Anne has not moved her seat, and for this reason has minimized any interference the seat might have with the bowards movement of the boat and thereby has protected the run of the boat. (2) It shows that Anne has lowered her Center of Gravity, which stabilizes the boat. (3) It shows that Anne has moved her Center of Gravity sternwards of the seat. This takes weight off the seat and puts Anne in the perfect position to use her heels to draw the shell underneath her.

I really like these drills - yes, Anne is an expert sculler but they work equally well for novices. One thing which intrigues me - Anne is a little lady (I'm nearly a foot taller!) but doesn't appear to lean back much at the finish. I'd be interested to hear her views on how much lean-back she recommends.

+Caroline Turnbull With all the advances in adjustable equipment (beyond the old wooden oars!), rigging can be set to put the rower in the maximally efficient positions, regardless of height. I lean back much less now than in the old days. My load is heavier, so I have a bigger arc and can row with bigger people. Now it's more about core strength, transmitting force, and keeping acceleration throughout the drive. When the knees are fully down, you're done the drive. Yes, it's still important to match the bodies swinging in a team boat, but everyone has become more efficient. Wondering if you are leaning back too far? Loosen your feet and let them tell you. For more explanation and practicing it with me, I'm happy to travel to give clinics :) You can email me at sculling7@hotmail.com

I do many drills myself and with the individuals and crews that I coach and scull in and in Sculling Academy www.scullingacademy.com I cover most of the drills ever invented and I invent new ones to resolve new issues that I encounter BUT there is one thing that you should understand about drills and that is that EVERY drill introduces a fault. Remember that it is perfect practice that makes perfect. So if you are not actually doing race pace sculling perfectly then you are practising something that is not actually what you want to be doing eventually. So whilst drills are helpful, indeed essesntial, you should always be aware of what it is you are doing in a drill that is NOT what you should be doing when you are actually sculling.
