Despite my current camera’s many elaborate auto focus options, because I started using digital cameras almost 20 years ago, my instinct is almost always focus and recompose. I’ve done it for so long that it’s basically instinctual and in most cases is faster than having to consider the various options and pick the best one. That said, as I’ve had to photograph my kids playing sports I’ve learned to embrace AF-C, tracking, zones, etc.

hi, maarten! i love your videos! i'm a fuji x shooter who uses a bunch of manual lenses, and there is a slight variation to the manual/back focus that's commonly used by street/documentary photographers and it's "focus limiter" focus i know you know this, but for others who don't: essentially, if your camera has this option available, it limits the camera's ability to focus beyond the distance that you set. so, for example, if you set the distance to be a min of 3 metres to max of 5 metres away, then, the camera will never focus beyond this area. in manual, what photographers do is that they put on tapes on the barrel to achieve the same effect, OR to set the lens to a predetermined point, THEN you physically move your body to achieve focus.

Great overview. I moved to back button focusing a few years ago and have not looked back. I shoot with a N D750. The only problem I have is when I give the camera over to someone to take a picture, I have to spend sometime instructing them how to use it. I never thought about the custom user settings (1 or 2) on the command dial as a quick way to have a more standard set-up for a visitor. Thanks again.

Great video, Maarten! Your videos are an important tool for me to understand deeper the capabilities of the cameras we use. I'd like to ask though, have you ever considered reviewing the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K? The reason I'm asking is I think it would be interesting to listen to your thoughts on a purely video-focused camera and how certain settings would vary from a photography camera and a video one. Of course there are plenty of cinema cameras out there, but they are mostly not affordable for the general public, which is why I thought the Blackmagic camera would be the standout one to review/test. Very clear concise interesting and informative .Personally I’m a focus and recompose sort of photographer most of the time and a manual focuser most of the rest of the time .There are a lot of photographers out there using vintage primes What do you think about another video about old school Manual focussing techniques or do you feel like there wouldn’t much demand. Anyway thanks for another good video

Maarten Heilbron My introduction to SLR photography was having A Zenith B thrust into my hands with the aperture set Focus pre set and instructions to press the shutter when the subject ( runners) were the right distance away . Another wonderful video 👍🏼 Focus has become so advanced these days, yet I persist with focus and recompose on my D810. No doubt once I get a Z6 at some point I will explore the options. One focus feature I like is to set shutter activation to release on focus. Especially for moving subjects. I do sometimes move the focus point around but not often.

I'm a newbie, but wouldn't recomposing mess up the focus in some situations, eg. when shooting wide open?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
@@dsego84 Not in AF-S, once you lock in the focus with the soft press, that focus will remain until you fully press. Recomposing wouldn't work if the camera or the subject moves - but the size of the aperture shouldn't affect it. It is a good question though, and I can imagine some lenses and wide apertures with a very narrow depth of field that could be affected.
@dsego84
@dsego84 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your answer. I've just started learning about the ins and outs of my xt-30. I've already noticed that adjusting the focus point on the screen or the little thumbstick is a pain when documenting my family. In the age of quick snaps with smartphones, nobody likes to pose for long and I'm still very slow to pick the focus point. And I've ruined enough shots with unfocused faces and blurry eyes so it bothers me a lot. In this case I should probably turn on face detect, but I also shoot other stuff, so I like to leave it off. Maybe I got carried away with my new f2 fixed lens and shallow depth of field as well.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
@@dsego84 It's rare that face/eye detect screws up an image - but that's why I suggest that you assign it to a function key so you can quickly turn it on and off.

I find myself often locking focus with the shutter button (AF single) and then immediately switching to manual (on Fujifilm bodies via the dedicated switch in front). great video! would love to see a video talking about using mis-matching body and lens combos - i.e., crop body + full frame lens, and vice versa - what works well, what doesn't, impact, etc. i hear a lot around buying full frame lenses with a crop body in case you upgrade, but not sure the impacts to shooting / image quality.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and the suggestion. Most manufacturers that make both full frame and crop bodies tend to make inferior crop lenses, if one wants a good lens, it will necessarily be full frame. The fiction that full frame lenses provide inferior results on a crop body is true only when the results are compared to a full frame body. They are always superior to the lower quality crop lenses.

To know how to kick the tires for lens selection, one needs to aware of the history of photography since 135 film, which is now known as Full Frame. The majority of lens manufacturers (beside Fujifilm) has been producing lenses for 135 film cameras for four to five decades and there are plenty of choices available. Professional & consumer grade, different focal lengths and variations. Most APS-C cameras share the same mount with the full frame models (downward compatibility), hence buying a FF lens is future proofing. IQ is either the same or superior due to better models (such as the Canon L and Nikon Gold ring lenses) are available. The disadvantages are not maximizing the lens, weaker choices in the wide end, heavier and more costly. For instance, Canon FF EF 70-200 (~APS-C 50-150) has four L models, f/4, f/4 IS, f/2.8 & f/2.8 IS and that broader choice is missing from its APS-C collection.

@@MaartenHeilbron I don't mean being a historian, but knowing certain facts help to understand. Of course, I can buy a spaceship to Mars without knowing anything except having money or buy a tube amp without knowing tube was popular once. However, I can explain to someone why UV filter and lens hood was recommended in the past, after shooting for over four decades. Hence, some people often bring an experienced friend along when shopping for their first car and 135/FF lenses happens to have a few decades of history. 😊

I have a simple MF setup that fuji video users might find useful. Problem with fuji is that the AF system is lightning fast, great for photography but not for video, it's too twitchy. R hand on grip, index finger at rest to front Fn button, thumb on rest at joystick. L hand underneath camera holding focusing ring,camera resting on palm near the joint. This allows me to MF without moving my hands around, front Fn button is set to zoom in using R index finger and R thumb if I need to adjust zoom in location.

The irony of how technology has taken a simple function, turn the focus ring until the subject is in focus, and changed it to a complicated system of choosing AF modes via a series of menus that require you to try to choose in advance which method will give the camera the best chances of guessing what you really want... I manually focus my Leica SL with my R lenses adapted to it. Just as I prefer to drive my older Porsche with it's 6 speed transmission vs a new Prius....
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 3 жыл бұрын
Although there is great value in manual focus, if you are working with a larger aperture and a very small depth of field, the AF system, particularly using eye detection, will provide a sharpness that is hard to get using manual mode - particularly if your subject is in motion.

@@MaartenHeilbron True, AF has a place, but even with BIF, I can prefocus, just like the old timers had to do it and get some great images.
