Being an American railfan, it’s always nice to see our diesel engines being used in locomotives that are built for the foreign market, especially if they’re built outside of the USA. Reminds me a lot of the SD70 series in terms of sound as well!

It does. Or at least to my hypertensive Autistic ears. My hearing is so sensitive I can hear my nighbour Jean talking to her daughter on the phone 3 doors away. The 69 is a little more throaty than a 66 from the way the 710 engine resonates with the body, and frame.

Now this is great stuff! Let's hope that GBRF will have some EMD repurposed ex-Class 60's for the Class 61/62 project. 60008/014/60018 could be used as test pilots for the new Class 61/62 with a similar setup although if repurposed for 95mph and if a HEP generator was fitted. They would be ideal for the CS sleeper trains and could be used with Mk4's for open access operators in the UK. Obviously they would be rebuilt inside like the ex-Class 56's but there would be more room for the HEP generator to be installed as well. I hope GBRF reads this and considers this avenue as well. But if they just wanted a freight only version of the Class 61/62, then that would be viable as well. Also using 60008/014/60018 that are non-runners anyway means they don't have to touch the 10 refurbished ex-Colas ones either. So they already have three test locomotives to hand, should they take up this concept :).

That's great to hear the UK is building a new breed of loco. But regarding it being environment friendly and economical, that engine sounded pretty high revved, how much fuel would it use. Those old Deltics were powerful too, and their engines just ticked over.
@TheSynthnut
@TheSynthnut 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure you mean Deltics, they screamed pretty hard, revving at 1500 rpm. The EE SVT engines in Class 37s were about half that. Most modern diesels run higher rpms though and certainly don't sound as gnarly as the old ones, being so heavily silenced, noise is considered an undesirable emission I'm afraid, much as enthusiasts love some thrash!

It doesn't sound as nice, as the recording I made years ago of Leander with 14 on with (GW freight loco 2800 at the rear but not working) climbing Eardington bank.

This was just a test - the loco in service will be painted in appropriate livery.

Sacrelidge, put the V16 back in for God's sake, why don't you just put an electric motor in and be done with it, heritage diesels are the only way to get our heritage diesel fix, I want to listen to a V16 not a poxy, muffled emission friendly stifled V12. Whatever next.

The Cl69 is a bit of a cheeky hack to get more 710 engines onto the GBRf fleet by taking advantage of grandfather rights. The 710s are anything but emission friendly.
