CLASS DESCRIPTION:
How to Sew Perfect Circles - Round and Round We Go:
Did you ever notice how many Circles you see everyday? Look around.
They're everywhere! Just looking around in my studio I see Circles in bottles of paint, a coffee cup, containers that hold art supplies, my dog's eyes, light fixtures, clock face, and my own face for that matter. Those are just the random Circles that jump out at me.
Circles are found in all cultures because it's one of the most common and universal shapes. Every shape symbolizes something, but none much more powerful than the simple Circle. Images of a circular sun make you think of warmth, growth and light. Circles have long been associated with safety, protection, and completeness.
It's really easy to draw a perfect Circle because you only need a compass or a plate to use as a guide. But Sewing Circles is an entirely different story! Seems silly, doesn't it?
Since it's easy to draw a Circle, why can't you just draw one and then stitch on it? I can be completely focused on stitching right on the line and no matter what, there's always a divot or a flat spot. Can you say annoying?! Stitching wonky Circles, on the other hand, I've got down to a science. I'm not really known for perfection. My philosophy is usually, "Oh I didn't expect that, but look how cool it turned out!" But, here's the deal. When I decide that I want to Stitch a Circle without bobbles or looking like a flat tire, perfection seems reasonable. LOL!
If you're like me and like Circles, I bet you'd like to use them in your Sewing projects. Circle appliqués, concentric Circles, yarn or fiber Circles, Circles from decorative stitches or just plain old straight stitch Circles are all cool ways to add symbolism and color. All you need to know is how to do it and then the sky is the limit.
Some Circles are best stitched with feed dogs down and others are easier without the feed dogs engaged. I'll show you which is best for each type of Circle and what presser feet work well.
When Sewing Circles, it's the perfect time to use the beautiful threads you've been hoarding. Stitched Circles really showcase them and if you're going to use those beauties, let's draw attention to them, right?
I have lots of examples, too, so you can see ways you might incorporate perfect Circles in your projects. Sewing partial Circles really adds a lot of interest and variety, too. I'll show you Sewing Circles from 1/2" to 10" in diameter with perfection. Ready to learn the secrets?
It's really simple. Just click the button in the video to join the class and I'll meet you there.

Excellent Video with nice ideas!!!! The circular attachment that Miss. Barb is using is made by Bernina, and it is # 83, and she has an old style Bernina sewing machine similar to mine, I have a 1630. Almost all Berninas, including the new ones, have those two threaded holes in the free arm near the stitch plate. That is where this accessory was attached with the screw. The old circular attachments from Singer also work with this machine. Not all sewing machines have those two threaded holes, so unless you find the way to make them, you need to use the Tape/Tack method. For that, I put a measuring tape from the needle to the outside so I could measure the diameter of the circle and could then tape the tack at the desired distance making it repeatable. And because I have the extension table, I am able to use a measuring tape of six inches length, giving me a circle of 12 inches diameter maximum. That tape gives you 1/2 the diameter of your circle, so if you attach the tack at three inches from the needle, you get a six inch diameter circle. I have that measuring tape permanently attached to my Singer 9960 with an extension table on which I can not use that Bernina Circular attachment.

Oh my word, this tutorial has blown my tiny mind 🤩. I already have the flower foot and just ordered the circular attachment for my Brother V7 machine, scouring through videos for ideas on how to use it and came across your tutorial which, I have to say, is by far the best. Once I have the attachment I am never going to leave my sewing room, I can see so many ways to use them and cannot wait to start playing. Thank you for sharing your inspirational talent 🙌🤩🥰

Hey, thanks. I used the taped-down-tack method to make a circular cover of two layers of terrycloth--for use while wet to cover a pot of cooked rice--and the endup didn’t match the beginning because the tack I used had a big domed head and it wiggled. At least I guess that that’s what happened. The match was good enough for what I needed, and I didn’t worry about it, and it worked out fine. Thanks for putting up the video.
@BarbOwenDesigns
@BarbOwenDesigns 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy. I'd say you're correct about the tack wiggling that caused the issue. I think that a flat headed thumbtack or a tack that you've flattened the head on might work better. Thanks for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. Stay Creative!

Gorgeous :-) Many thanks for the tack solution, how simple, dear Watson! I have just been thinking about how to make extra large circles, and this is it. When moving the fabric with the tack still in place to sew concentric circles, you may want to use that bothersome cap from the circular attachment? Just to put it on the tack on top of the fabric to secure the fabric against slipping from the tack. And give some joy of life to that teeny-weeny sad little chap, eh? :-)

I have started using thinned elmers glue to adhere small items and even baste seams. It adheres by heat or if you have time, weight it down, sometimes I just finger press. I apply small dots of glue if not heating and hold it 15 to 20 seconds then move on. Experiment to get the right thickness of water glue.

If you need a circle larger than what your compass or circle shape can provide, use a tramell set. This will include x2 clamps, a ruler and pencil. The clamps attach to the ruler. One clamp has a needle pointer that would be set as the centre of your circle on fabric and the other clamp you attach your drawing pencil to. You adjust the clamps against the ruler, to the radius length of the circle as desired, so you can draw circles as large as the constraint of the ruler. You most probably can use any ruler or drawing tool (pencil, etc), as always routinely check with the vendor. Tramell set.

@BarbOwenDesigns
@BarbOwenDesigns Жыл бұрын
Hi there. You need to check with a dealer you carries Husqvarna machines to find out which attachment works on your machine. The Bernina attachment won't work on any machine other than Bernina, but most machine brands have something that will work, I believe. Leather will probably be too stiff unless a fairly light weight. Hope that helps a little bit. Thanks for watching. Stay Creative!

Cool video - Thanks for showing this - I guess the flowers that get stitched are only as wide as the center of the flower atachment thing - Exactly how large is the center of the flower atachment?
@BarbOwenDesigns
@BarbOwenDesigns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Esther. With the Flower Stitcher foot, you are correct that the flowers are small. The largest size is approximately 1.25" in diameter. It will make smaller flowers, too, With the circle attachment or the "tack and tape" method, you can create much larger circles that could become fantasy flowers or whatever you can imagine. That is determined by your machine's attachment and the distance from the presser foot to the main part of the machine. Thanks so much for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. Stay Creative!

Hi from south africa, is it possible to use cotton batting on the reverse side of the fabric insted of stabilizer?
@BarbOwenDesigns
@BarbOwenDesigns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pauline! I don't think you will have much success with cotton batting, but give it a try. The stabilizer makes the fabric stiff whereas cotton batting is much more flexible. There is a spray you can get to spray on fabric that will make it as stiff as paper and then will dissolve when washed. It's called Terial Magic. I believe that would work very well. Hope that helps. if you use a stabilizer that is an iron on type you can actually use a stretch fabric you need to use a stretch needle so the needle does not cut the threads in the material and you will need to play with the different stitches to see what works best and your tension but you can use it I make bras and I embroider all the time on stretch fabrics

Hi Chrystal, the adapter I have doesn't have a number engraved on it. Any Bernina dealer should be able to order the proper shank for your specific machine. Mine is a Bernina 1230. Barb I am a little confused about the spray to stabilize? Why not just use the press on or iron on type?

Hi Janet. If you wish to use a stabilizer that doesn't contain a fusible backing, the temporary spray will attach it to the back of your fabric to keep it from shifting. I hope you see my "questions" here and can answer them. I'm going to get a Brother machines which has just four feed dogs. I've read on the brother circular attachment how you need to have a machine with at least seven feed dogs. I've also read how someone says their machine works with the circular attachment even though it isn't listed as compatible. I am wondering if you know whether you can use a "four - feed - dog" machine with the circular attachment that says it needs to have seven feed dogs. Also, is.there a good "universal" circular attachment which will actually work on a Brother Machine if the four feed dogs are all you have to work with. ( I just know how many universal things don't actually work on everything they are made for.)

I'm not sure that I can be or much help here. It's always best to talk to the dealer for your specific brand of machine or to contact customer service online. The only other thing I can suggest is to experiment and try things with your machine. There are so many variables that without having my hands on it, it's impossible for me to give much more advice. I know that doesn't help much. . . Stay Creative and enjoy your machine!
