I love when you tell us about how you price. That is something I struggle with! And many ppl don’t want to pay a fair price. I always hear “I could make that”. Well you didn’t and I did 😂 thanks for the guidance!

I agree. I quilt & people always want a blanket for them selves or a baby on the way with out any consideration of costs.. When I tell them how many yards of fabric & batting go into a blanket and quote them just the cost of material they get defensive like I'm trying to cheat them. Not even noting my time, & energy, in driving around, shopping for the material, prewashing fabric, buying patterns at times, measuring, configuring, cutting, piecing, sewing, the weight of it under my machine. My other many supplies , power usage & a time schedule away from my own projects & responsibilities. And then quilting threw it all, & binding, washing with half a dozen color catchers & delicate laundry detergents, ironing so its presentable. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that go into people's crafts. There is value in craftsmanship . If they don't want to pay for that then they can buy something of less quality & heart make in mass production in a sweatshop from off the shelf of a big box department store.

I make tee shirt quilts for others. A custom layout, quilting, binding, time and materials can easily make a lap/twin size quilt run to $750 US. Some clients can appreciate all I do, others say "There's a place online that will do the quilt for $80." Fine. I'm making you an heirloom. An $80 quilt will quickly turn into a pet bed. I value my skills and time. @@justinacarothers2699

Yep, same issues with handknitting too. Just charging minimum wage for the time, without charging for materials and everything else on top... that already prices it out of almost anyone's budget.

I agree. My mother sews beautifully. She has all her life. She makes things to sell to earn pocket money, and some people don't want to pay. They also say things like that but have never made a single thing themselves. They don't appreciate the time, effort, creativity and work that goes into making bags, etc.

My sister did this for years in Montreal, Canada using the material that was used in office divider cubicles. There was a company in Montreal that made the dividers and if they were redoing the dividers they would just throw out that lovely wool fabric. They gave it to her, she would wash it hang it on a line to dry and made shopping bags. Her company was called The Three R’s, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. The bags are well over thirty years old and I still use them. Now in her 70’s she teaches women how to sew in Montreal, a lot of them do not speak English or French but she has found a way to communicate. My mother taught us well how to help people in need. I make up bags with socks, mittens, hats and scarves and give them out to our homeless people here in Calgary, Alberta. I knit the scarves and I have found a few women friends to help me knit the hats. My sister also had another company where she made bags like yours. Cosmetic bags, Kleenex holders, jewellery bags.

Awesome video. I had a friend who was an interior designer. She always gave me her old fabric books too. I can remember making pillows, hot pads, placemats and shopping bags with the mountain of fabric i got from her. My sewing days are sadly over, but i still enjoy watching how people create and your video was so perfect. I thought about 20$ american dollars.thank you!

Extremely useful video.. thanks SO much for sharing. I’ve been struggling with my own pricing, so this will be very helpful. So glad you were so honest about making a mistake! We learnt a valuable lesson, hopefully without making the mistake ourselves! Your bags are very similar to ones I make, except that I add a chain shoulder strap onto the tabs.

I think your feeling of $30 instead of the $20 you priced it out as is exactly right. As someone who does contracting quotes for a larger consulting company, a chargeout rate of 2x your labour rate is very skimpy to be able to cover your ancillary costs, and the time spent on "mistakes" is definitely part of the process of the job. Nobody does things exactly right the first time around, especially for one-off, unique projects.

Congratulations on the new house! Thank you for this video, I've been looking at the same rugs and wanting to make one but unsure if it would be worth it. You've given me the confidence to give it a try! I think I remember something about taping the edges with masking tape so they weren't so sharp, but your idea of finishing the edges is brilliant. After hearing your constructive criticism of the water, I may try an embroidery type stitching on the canvas to give the low smooth texture and see how it goes! Thank you again so much, another awesome video❤

My former husband's wife is addicted to my table runners! Yes, we all get along quite well. So, my daughter raids my sewing area for gifts at Christmas. Pot holders are quite the hit as well. I make Amish Star potholders and they are quite the hit, and bowl cozies. Everyone in my county has at least one set of each, especially at Christmas. Oddly enough, one woman hangs my pot holders on her cabin walls. I truly mean matte, and frame them.😊 Whatever...😅❤

when i was in my teens, my father had his own business painting (interior/exterior)) there was a place where he would get the paint, well over time the store no longer needed the sample paint book so my dad brought them home, inside of the book were swatches of fabric that gave ideas to use for particular paint colors, i took all the fabrics out of the book (just glued in a spot) and made a baby quilt for a family friend...i love the ideas you came up with the samples

Hi Christine, new subscriber here. Wow, this was an amazing video. I didn't know such a batch material cutting tool existed. Or big rolls of zip. I hope I'm saying it right. My mother sews like a pro, but it was never my thing. Now that I am older I am developing an interest in sewing. 😂 My mother has green fingers and I thought I didn't. I did a Permaculture Certification and found out I love plants so much I did have green fingers. I did not have one plant and went onto fill the entire courtyard with plants. 😂 We never know what we are capable of until we try. The price I made up in my head that you would sell the bags for was around 34 dollars each. That is without having a clue about how you cost things. Thank you for sharing how you cost. I think the bags look super. 💗Plus you put the fabrics to very good use. I can't bear anything being thrown on the landfill. Life is weird. Mudlarkers go and dig around old victorian landfills and river banks to find things that were considered trash back then. They are repurposing what was once thrown away. 😂 I will watch your other videos. Maybe I might get out the second hand sewing machine I bought and try my hand at making a bag for myself to see how the process works. Take care and happy bag selling. 🤗 💐 👜🛍️👝

Welcome to the channel Janine. That cutting tool (electric fabric cutter) has been a blessing for me, especially with all the bags i've had to cut out, and the continuous zips save so much time and expense. Life is a wonderful journey of exploration. It's amazing how what we thought wasn't possible, or we simply loathed when young, comes back to be a big part of your life as you mature😁

Thanks for a very interesting video. It does make you realise how hard it is to make a living by selling home made items. I tried to sell craft items a number of years ago when my children were young but it was discouraging as people didn’t want to pay for the hours that you put in. I wish you good fortune in your future endeavours. 😊

These are so beautiful! I do agree with what you mentioned about not using the name tag. I would but buy it just because of the tag. I think it takes away from the absolutely beautiful fabric and the beautiful work you did. If the tag was inside the bag that would be perfect to me. Maybe just hanging so it would be less work. I would have bought several. Thank you for teaching those that don't know about pricing too! You are so kind to make this video

Superb batch-sewing demo. THANK YOU for the warning to check the zipper assembly with the first piece! I can *sew* see me doing that 😅. Most YTers will not discuss pricing. That’s understandable as every region is different. However, you covered some very important points that small business owners need to take into consideration.

Your prices are perfect because of everything involved in making them.😊 I personally do a spreadsheet and factor in everything that it takes to make my items. The different fabrics and their prices, zippers, magnetic snaps, thread, labels, buttons, etc. are going to also be factored in since they are apart of my designs. Of course you will have some people who will want to say it's too high, but I always inform them that I'm not going to give my items away and it takes time to make them and I'm not paying myself minimum wage for sewing my own designs.😊

I feel all your cost calculations are spot on. I have made these bags with donated upholstery but I'm new to zippers so they take me longer than you. Processing the upholstery samples is no joke and very time consuming. People don't realize that. I live in Mississippi USA. $30/ea wouldn't sell here. So when pricing we need to take into account if an item is worth making if your price to recoup your expenses is too high.

I though $20 US dollars too, which is $30 Australian. Love your pricing process. You save a lot because all of your fabrics are donations or recycled rescues from landfill. Best recycles are for stuff people will naturally reuse (like houses) in my view. Thanks for sharing. 😊

I'm sure you'll be a great sewer Ashley. Trick is to go slow, be patient, and allow the seam ripper to become your best friend. I make several mistakes often. I just don't share them all. As for sewing straight, don't look at the needle. Look where you're headed. Just like driving a car. If you look at the bonnet, you'll crash. If you look where you're going, you'll be just fine. I have a video on sewing straight that might help😀

Thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching them. I have an idea I want to run by you. When you folded over the fabric to cut it…what if you cut a narrow rectangle at the top instead? Cut it short by about 1-1/2 inches from the sides tho…then sew in the zipper. This way you don’t need to sew zip tabs on the ends and it’s 1 piece of fabric. I’m thinking it should save you some time. Not sure exactly how to incorporate the lining but you’re so clever, I think you could come up with a way. Glad your arm is out of the sling and you’re doing well! 😊

I love your pricing and think your final price points were good for the product (I thought £15 - U.K. based so that’s roughly $30 AUD). (Not criticising, just a point of note - unless I misunderstood you said 11hr x $45 = $585, your maths is slightly off as that would actually be $495)

Good video with very informative factors. $30 for a bag like that in USA may be a bit high, however, the upholstery material would help it increase in price.
