Many viewers have asked me for advice on how to price their products to sell.
In this video, I'll explain how I come up with my labour rate, the comparison between countries, and how to work out what your items might be worth to sell.
Comparison of minimum hourly pay rate in 2022 (as sourced from Google)
$21.38 au
$7.25 us (in some States hourly rate varies from $7.25 up to around $15.85)
$21.20 NZ
£9.50 UK
$11.81 CAN
How my formula works
Hourly rate / qty made = price per item
eg $40 / 5 = $8 per item
My selling price comparison based on a $15 item in Australia
AU $15.00
US $10.40
NZ $16.54
UK £ 8.50
CAN $13.48

Here in Kentucky, U.S.A., minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. It is different from state to state. Many places are paying more per hour just to get and keep good workers. I do not like to take in sewing from other people; because, I have no idea what to charge. Plus, I don't want to be taken advantage of. Sometimes when I help someone out, they send their friends and family to also take advantage of me. I never could make a living by taking in piece work. Sewing, knitting, and crochet are my hobbies and my way of relaxing. I do not want my home turned into my sweat shop. Having to meet deadlines takes all the fun out.

I agree Arvetta. I prefer to provide my alterations service for my workplace, and love doing it there, but I do make sure people don't take advantage of me. I'll even refuse to do a job if a person treats me as though I am lesser than them. My home studio is mostly for my personal sewing, which I don't seem to do enough of these days 😀

I think important to tell folks as well that our hourly rate is more than a lot of countries because our cost of living is so high here in Australia , and minimum wage while sounds high compared to other countries is not here,I work for charities and the amount of folks not able to feed their families on minimum wage is rising as our cost of living is sky rocketing,this may help put into perspective that while minimum rate sounds high,compared to living costs it's actually very very low, love your videos, looking forward when we warm up a bit to coming on a road trip for a visit to your store,im deer park,Melbourne's west so ill be bugging hubby to bring me for a drive as I love the look of your lovely shop.

Minimum wage varies by province/territory in Canada ($15 currently in Ontario). It's funny how some people think if you hand make something or have a small business that you should value your time less than someone who works for an employer in a shop or factory or office or trade.

The USA, unlike Australia, doesn't have uniform wage minimums. Eg. Colorado min $12.56, California min $15.50, Texas min $7.50. In Aus, $21.38 is the lowest rate that an adult can legally be offered for permanent work and that covers the whole country. The rate is 25% higher for casual work, $25.41.

To be honest, I've found it very difficult to draw in customers, but I do a massive amount of sharing on Facebook groups as it's free. I'll share on as many pages or groups that allow me the freedom to do so, and then I might get a sale. It takes a while to get your name out there. I also have my contact details on labels so when people do buy, and friends like it, the label will tell them where to buy🤪

Great information! Thank you! How would you calculate the cost of the fabric if you are paying for it? For example, you need to cut 4 pieces of 9" x7" and one at 18"X3" and interfacing etc. $14.99 reg price per yard.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Жыл бұрын
Good question Njemile. Supposing the fabric direction works, you should only need ¼ yard fabric @$14.99 yard which is $3.75 cost for the fabric piece. Then decide if you want extra for the cost of material. That's for you to decide, but you want to recover the costs at least. Do same for interfacing. I rarely charge extra for materials, but make sure my labour is well and truly covered 🙂

When you talk about making 5 bags in an hour, does that include cutting time or just sewing time?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I usually include the cutting time when I mention how long something takes, but when I do these bags, I often cut out enough fabric and strapping to do around 100 bags. But to cut out enough fabric to make 6 bags, it would only take around 10 minutes. (I get 3 pags per strip of fabric 90cm x 150cm or 36" x 60") I also use an electric cutter which allows me to cut about 16 layers at a time. 😀

Not sure how you calculated your US value. Most quilters and sewists here charge a minimum of $25 to $40 per hour. Nobody would ever consider accepting $7.25/hour to sew anything. McDonald's will pay a teenager $13/hour here. While it is nice that you are able to get a lot of your fabric for free, your pricing doesn't compete well against others who must pay for their items. The materials to make your grocery tote bag here would cost cost me a minimum of $15, so selling it for only $10.40 would be a losing proposition to me. There is no way I would make/sell that bag for less than $25-$30 here, and that wouldn't be enough money for me to do it. While we do have a Federal minimum wage, there are very people who are actually paid that little amount. Your minimum wage is $21/hour, yet you are pricing your product at $40/hour. Not quite sure why you would assume everyone else would be willing to work for minimum wage.

Debbie, I've since discovered via all this wonderful feedback, that wages in the US varies quite a bit. I've updated it in the description. Sadly when I googled the information, I didn't delve into each State.... As for my bags, I do charge up to $45 au for them if I've had to purchase the fabric. Of course, I don't sell as many at that price. 😊

I think the principle of Christine's pricing is sound, primarily the message of "don't undervalue your labor." A method which you may find more appealing, what I use for pricing, which is 70-80% markup of total material cost including packaging and platform fees (or just total cost to make/ship one item). 80% is higher than a standard 40% profit margin (which is generally what, for example, grocery stores markup), because I'm factoring in the taxes (16-23% net profit, which is nothing to scoff at!) I will have to pay as well. For my work (also sewing), that percentage allows me to replace an item (though it happens rarely) and still make something of a profit, or at least take no loss. I spend a LOT of time scouring for good deals, and market testing fabric so I don't have waste. That being said, it's really hard to tell how far money goes in another country compared to your own. For all we know, $10 (american conversion let's say) could go a lot further than $10 in america, and it may be viable for her to price minimally as such. But, living in the US, we know that $7.50 will get you a gallon of gas and a can of beans, which ain't sh*t, lol!
@karenmcmullan
@karenmcmullan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi,Christine did say that the $40 per hour is her $21 per hour minimum wage, then the $19 remaining is for equipment, lighting, rent, power etc As she is also the owner, CEO, graphic designer, pattern maker etc, none of those positions are at minimum wage. A person on minimum wage here is paid superannuation on top of that wage, gets covered (if they aren't a casual employee) for paid holidays and sick pay, they are covered by insurance if they are injured on the job, everything is supplied for them, the list goes on. At $40 per hour Christine is actually undervaluing her efforts and expenses. Thankfully the rest of her business activities cover what would be a shortfall, if she only had her hand made goods to survive on. A single sewing can not compete with the mass produced market, especially for what comes out of china. The overheads that Christine pays in a day would cover multiple staff etc in other countries. It's why most label brands are made in cheap labour countries.
