Simply amazing, there are no other words to describe it, also clever and simple design on the lifting forks mechanic and swappable motors. The light was good in the video, I wonder what the differences are inside compared to Stinger. If I had the money and would be living in the US, I'd sure like to build a robot and possibly go to one of those competitions, well who knows, maybe one day.

Where do you live? If you're in Europe, there are a number of comps that you can get into, a large variety of weight classes from 150g(seriously) all the way to big heavyweights like this(not sure what the specific weights are in Euro, but US is 220-250lbs, up to 340lb for SHW), and Euro bots tend to be cheaper than US bots too. As far as competitive robots goes, I don't know exactly what they've spent, but Sewer Snake is DEFINITELY one of the cheaper HW robots. Take BattleBots for examples(pretty much the pinnacle of combat robotics), there have been robots that have nearly $100,000 invested into them between design & engineering, labor, parts, raw materials, and machining & fabrication($$$), though that is uncommon and certainly doesn't guarantee a win over a well designed robot like this one. But you certainly won't find anything near that expensive in Euro competition, and, because the weaker Euro arenas lead to very strict limits on spinner power allowed(to prevent pieces of robots from going through the arena, a legitimate problem throughout the evolution of these competitions), you generally won't suffer as much damage in Euro comps as much as you may in US comps which allows for cheaper armor to be used. If you're legitimately interested, this is a very accessible sport in North America and Europe, even some comps in South America from what I've heard. Just get on google and do some searching, there's PLENTY of info out there to get you started.

The Flame thrower is in the lifter on top of the robot! And it can be effective in some cases. It was able to disable Son of Ziggy in their fight against Ragin Scotsman melting a control hose!!! but mostly it's for fun and it looks good!!!

I've been a fan of robotics for years. I can't make one due to money issues, but I love designing one. I was thinking of making a Swiss Army Knife bot(interchangeable weapons) bot with a selection of a ring, a drum, a lifter, etc. This video has been the most specific one I've seen as far as going into detail about what's in the robot, and I'm glad to see it. Loved seeing Stinger in Battlebots too

Dude, your explanation is fine. I've been coaching FRC teams for 6 years now and your talk-through was more than adequate to explain all the inner-workings. Love how you use Victors. My teams have switched over to Jaguars and they're just not the same. I miss the Victors. CANNOT wait to switch over to Talons. Couple questions if you see this: How comparable are the motors you use to CIM motors? Are you using #35 chain for the drive motors, and what size is you manipulator chain? You mentioned a number of suppliers; do you purchase from VEX or AndyMark? Good luck, man!
@mattmaxsr

freedomfightre """How comparable are the motors you use to CIM motors? """ CIM =337 W (at 2,655 rpm, 172 oz-in, and 68A) S28-400= at stall 3720 oz-in) stall torque is apples to oranges with the CIM output but these are VERY torquey motors so if the s28-400 is 10 times stronger you are also paying 10 to 15 times more!!! """Are you using #35 chain for the drive motors, and what size is you manipulator chain?"" Kind of..it called 35R or 35race chain sold at go kart stores. Its a little heavier and wider, but it rated at about as strong as #40 ANSI chain! here's a link to the chain we use ( www.bmikarts.com/35-RLV-Extreme-Chain-Gold-on-Black-_p_637.html ) """You mentioned a number of suppliers; do you purchase from VEX or AndyMark?""" I know of them, and Ive gotten aluminum sprockets from andymark (i think) in the past.

Thanks Matt. Love Sewer Snake, great build. Curious if you have ever burned out the lifter motor from stalling it. I like the simplicity you have with it by having no clutch or limit switches. I guess if you tried to run it too far it would stall and possibly burn itself out. Has it ever happened?

Would have loved to fight them. When we were in the UK fighting at the UK championship 2006 we met part of the Razor team, but they didn't have a bot there.They were great fun and wouldn't openly admit to being worried about fighting us, but had concerns!!! Could have been a great mach up, but as a competitive robot fighter I think we could have taken them !!!

To get motors on the cheap, try to find some used, good condition electric wheelchairs by Pride Mobility Services. I was able to find one for about $100 USD at a used furniture and appliance store. You could keep the whole frame assembled and work with that, or you can pull the motors out and build your own frame. The latter will require more work and money, but you'll get a better robot out of it. You'll still need proper electronics, though.

It does not look like you have enough room for the flame thrower in this frame. How were you able to house that and how come you could not use the flame thrower in one of the fights at Robogames 2012? I heard the speaker say that you had to choose between flame thrower and wheels due to weight so you chose having two wheels. In any case, I can't see where you could house the propane. Also, this is just word of mouth but are flames very effective in most bot fights?

Do you use a drop-center wheel configuration on sewer snake? Almost all FIRST bots I've encountered used drop centered wheels to make turning easier, but when it comes to combat robots most tank drives I've watched were 4wd and had no drop center wheels. Is there any reasoning behind this? Is it the floor material that makes the difference? I suppose "scrubbing" when turning on a dirty steel floor is probably much less of a problem than the carpet fields in FRC. Biteforce did apparently have drop center treads on it during battlebots and it did pretty well.
@mattmaxsr
@mattmaxsr 6 жыл бұрын
This is a little late but here's my feelings... the power to weight ratio of combat robots compared to FRC is probably a bit more powerful and when designing and testing we did some test with the center wheel 1/8" to 3/8" bigger. We found it wasn't needed, and actually caused over steer, and a less stable platform, so we moved away from that idea.

Every thing is a trade off, there is no right answer....just less wrong answers! Our design worked better when I was driving better!!! So if I don't start practicing more, I may have to add some armor!!!
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 6 жыл бұрын
Another trade off is that powerful spinners(even rammers) can hit the outside wheel armor hard enough to bend it into the wheels. And, the way that this drivetrain is designed, if one wheel was completely locked up due to this, it would prevent that entire side of the robot from moving. So that design element is really a tough call - exposed wheels are no doubt more susceptible to damage but that damage is limited to the individual wheel the takes the hit, while armor should allow for bigger hits to the side without damaging the wheels but a big enough hit that locks up only 1 wheel would shut down drive for that entire side even though the other 2 wheels are undamaged. Worst case scenario, damage to your wheel armor could cause you to lose by KO, even though that was the only damage that occurred and the actual drivetrain is perfectly fine. To take it a little further, using a smaller drive motor for each wheel instead of a single motor driving 3 would overcome that potential problem with wheel armor, but then of course you have increased weight that you're going to have to deal with, more components to potentially fail, and another proverbial 10lbs of shit to stuff into that 5lb aluminum bag. Trade offs!

Hi, I'm thinking of building a combot if I can manage to scrape enough cash together, and I was wondering if you had any adice for me. I am thinking of a "Box on wheels" rambot style, maybe with some sort of electric lifter on it. I also want to currently avoid pneumatics and hydrolics due to a lack of expertise, and also avoid having a full on spinner since I would like to go to events near where I live (UK), but still be able to hold my own in an american competition like Robogames.
@T86157
@T86157 11 жыл бұрын
Dude, did you watch this video of Matt's Sewer Snake? A lot of the competitors utilize their experience to build combots by the seat of their pants. He knows more about the ins and outs of what is more likely to work than not. Don't get greedy. Do your own math if you're that concerned about entropy of the fight.
