SEWING a 1940's Vintage Blouse in Vintage Fabric

Hello My Lovelies,
I was so excited when I found this 1940's vintage fabric on a recent thrifting trip and I knew straightaway that I wanted to make the Simplicity 8736 1940's reproduction blouse pattern! So I thought I'd share the project with you and despite a few issues, I really love how my blouse turned out! And Chartruese!!! Such a brilliant colour! I'm sure I'll be making a few more of these over the colder months for my Autumn?Winter wardrobe.

When I saw the pattern I recalled one off my very early memories. Mum in a chocolate will suit with view A in a buttercup coloured crepe. My parents were married in 1945 yes I was a Victory baby! This outfit was her going away assemble which she wore to death, as you did, rationing.!!!! Funny that my most vivid memories involve clothing!

I made this blouse a few months ago, and my collar met in the back as the drawing shows. I used some cotton leftover from a dress (far too anxious to use a silky type fabric!) for a wearable muslin and the fussy part for me was in the collar facing. I had to cut tiny notches to ease it to fit right. I adore how yours looks and am tempted to make the long sleeved version next.

It's the first time I feel relaxed when watching a sewing video, many times the videos is edited as if they were in a rush which booming music often amplify that feeling.

The amount of times I have found the facing around the neck on vintage patterns. I guess it was a theme back then.

Looks like you’ve followed the pattern correctly. I would draft a new collar pattern for it, extending the back part of the collar to meet the centre back as the drawing intends. Your blouse looks lovely regardless of the ‘glitch’.

A possible reason why they turned out differently-the pattern companies are reissuing their vintage designs through one of two processes...hunting down the original patterns including at resale shops and social media because they did not keep them OR through drafting anew based on pictures...The company may use new line drawing based on the redraft or new/old drawings based on the otiginals. BTW: With that fabric and those buttons, I think I actually prefer the collar ending short and showing off the top button more than I would have liked the collar meeting

They do keep their old patterns. They have the masters. They are invaluable to them. It’s what all businesses should do.

@@HGCUPCAKES The only company with an archives is Vogue and theirs is incomplete- It wasn't until the 1970s when businesses, in general, started keeping product archives. (It was actually Disney, who then and now, protected its in house archive of films, first began to license then release movies to the home market on videotape in 1978, that actually got companies seriously considering archiving their products in house.)

Hello Tara! Your back may be a different size than your front. Maybe an FBA would achieve a better fit than a larger size. But, I'm not seeing any telltale drag lines. So, it could be pattern manufacturers' error. Applying binding as opposed to facings was a much better idea. It gives a much cleaner finish. In spite of the frustrating instructions, you've done a wonderful job. The colour is to die for. I love how you've styled it with crush velvet and denim. That look is an entire mood! Very Edith Head!

As my whardrobe is me-made I come across patterns that have errors in them especially the very expensive Vogue, but I crack on and will not stop. I believe these obstacles makes me better and proud, when the passion is in place there no shopping it. I am where for any encouragment you might need take good care

Hi Tara, I love your top and your styling of it. I’ve made this top version B. And I found the same problem when I came to the neckline. You solved this “problem “ much better than I did. I do however love this blouse and will try your finish technique the next time I make it.

10:23 Stretching of the neckline pieces: It may have helped to carefully stay-stitch the neckline, facing and collar sections before handling them and check that the shape fit the pattern piece. It's also possible the front button and buttonhole bands were intended to be stitched together inside out and turned for a self facing on that part. The fabric is lovely; but crepe does stretch!

I enjoy retro patterns, but full figured women are hard to find! For US patterns, I forget size, and go ONLY on bust measurements.

I had a similar collar issue with a McCalls pattern recently- the answer was the pictures in the instructions showed to sew and clip to the notch but the pattern actually needed to go together at a dot about 1 inch further along- and I didn't notice because I was able to ease in the excess. I only found out by looking at other reviews when it looked weird.

I’ve used simplicity for another 40’s blouse (the one that comes with the overalls). I think their patterns just have an odd sizing issue? Facings fit weird, and I have to modify it. They also include a LOT of ease. I ended up cutting the pattern several sizes than recommended smaller in order to get a better fit. I figured out the hard way that I need to make mock-ups after discovering that the crotch seam of the 40’s trousers was way too deep despite fitting my waist perfectly.

Reason you had problems with the blouse facing is they didn't have facings. Finished with bias as you did or with self bias or seam binding. I've looked at vintage garments and blouses just didn't make use of them unless they were supporting buttons and button holes. I suspect they were drafted to match what modern sewers are used to. Spot on about not using modern interfacing too. People don't realise that in seeing vintage properly you have to use the same techniques and technologies.

Im going to take your advice on sewing French seams with lightweight fabrics! I tried pinking and its still fraying a bit so I guess French seams are the way to go

I’m still getting the hang of them! But I do want to sew some 1940s undergarments from a pattern lol so I’ll definitely have to get used to them! Im going to re do the blouse I did with French Seams next time. I do have a question if I may, but how much seam allowance would you add to compensate for the French seam?

I had the same problem with the facing! I thought I did something wrong with the button band because I up cycled fabric and the button band from another shirt. Have you figured out how to fix it since? The blouse looks beautiful though 😊

I cannot figure out how to do the back panels. The instructions do not make any sense. I am putting it away now and will have a look at it again, probably making it up as I go along!

Hello Tara! Despite the disappointment that the top did not work out as expected, it is still really beautiful. I especially like it with the thin black belt on. Crazy how a simple and covering top can be sexy

@@TaraDeighton I have another person that I follow who has compared original vintage patterns and the reissue patterns it’s a wild difference between them sometimes. I don’t know how they are doing them but it’s never good.

The blouse buttons on the back which is where the pattern discrepancy was.

Funny enough I have found vintage patterns reissued often have problems such as you experienced. I think the problem is vintage sizing is modernized and often times instruction sheets are altered without quality control. The pattern pieces are sloppily graded resulting in annoying problems like yours. Thanks for the tip re insertion of sleeves for french seaming much easier than what I was doing.

Why on earth did you you not make a toile? A pattern you’re unfamiliar with, a unique piece of vintage fabric… an experienced sewer surely would have made a toile?

Quite simply my Dear, I don't often have the time logistically when sewing for myself to both toile and sew the garment. Even the most experienced seamstress encounters problems/makes mistakes from time to time and luckily I love the finished blouse!
