Last week I made some stays and while stays are super cool and exciting you have to wear something under them so this week I've made a chemise and a skirt! The chemise is made of black silk chiffon from Mood Fabrics using Butterick 3906. The skirt is made from black wool I found in my stash so I don't know where it's from sorry, but I took major inspiration from Selkie's Lickedy Splitz Ritz gown and made a big circle skirt with a giant rectangular ruffle on the bottom. It is so much fun to twirl in! I go over some tips regarding cutting chiffon and what seams to use, and go pretty in depth in how to construct a continuous bound placket for the skirt closure.

I recently learned that the "dress yourself" explanation for the right over left vs. left over right is likely a myth--among other things in a household where adult women were being dressed by a servant, adult men were also likely being dressed by a servant as well--though it might explain why children's clothing is the way it is. Apparently it originates in the 20th century when mens and womens shirt styles became similar and fly front women's trousers became popular, as a shortcut to tell what kind of body a garment was cut for. Also I'm really obsessed with this kind of off-the-shoulder chemise under stays, I would wear an outfit like this every day if I could, but sadly I'm living in a country where shoulders are a bit indecent for everyday, RIP.

Baby Bat stubbornly refusing to star in this video when you're working so hard to prepare for her professional holiday is adorable! Silk chiffon is pure evil, you have nerves of steel. Those sleeves gave me a flashback of student me salivating over Lolita fashion, very princessy. The reveals were gorgeous. And that backpack!❤

she's having a hard time accepting her newfound fame 😂 this chiffon was definitely better to cut than most! it was the more expensive one from mood but I think being more expensive made it more substantial and easier to cut. trade-offs i guess 😭 I'm working on next month's videos concurrently to these and the chiffon for that chemise was an absolute NIGHTMARE omg shifted everywhere

thank you! this chiffon wasn't too bad actually! I'm working on my renfaire costume at the same time as this costume and the chiffon for that chemise is so delicate it was suuuch a pain to cut. I think the mood chiffon was a lot more substantial which was easier to cut!

Hello! Can I have more explanation for the circle skirt? How did you decide on your waist measurement for the gathered part? 2-3x your waist measurement?

For gathers I usually do 1.5-2x! I don't believe I gathered the waist for this skirt at all though actually, I think I just used my waistband measurement

My 16 yr old daughter and I love your outfits. She is getting into design and I am her sewer. Have you used Horsehair Braid for tiny hems? I just had my first experience with it while I was working on her homecoming dress and I love it. Also, do you have any advice for someone that is thinking about going into the design world?
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
Aw thank you so much! I have used horsehair braid for hems! I use them a lot on magical girl or idol anime cosplays 😊 I'm not super familiar with fashion design, I'm more in the performing/costuming world but I would say try to find an internship while she's still in high school - it'll give her a lot of great experience and most of them don't pay unfortunately so it's better to get the lower tier stuff out of the way while she can still be supported by family! For things to do at home, definitely read up on clothing history, for costuming, knowing how the silhouettes change over time is super important, for fashion, understanding the influence and differences between specific designers is crucial. Drawing skills are also very necessary for any kind of design career. Hope that helped! If you or your daughter have specific questions please feel free to ask!

Ok. I’m obsessed with your skirt and I have seen you wear it in other videos since then, and I really want to make one for myself. But I do have a question…I have watched the video multiple times and I’m trying to figure out if it is a regular circle skirt or a double circle skirt. I know you mentioned in the video gathering down the waist, so I was thinking it was a circle skirt with a larger waist size gathered down, but I wasn’t totally sure. I also know you patterned yours off another skirt, and the clip showing the initial skirt had so much fabric when you twirled that I thought it looked like the double circle there…Any insight that is a little more specific? It’s a lot of fabric and I don’t want to experiment and mess up with that much fabric.

I find that when I make a change to my pattern to do something that's probably harder and will likely make my life more difficult I actually get less annoyed during the process. If I'm just feeling (: about a rectangle skirt and it starts giving me issues then I get cross more quickly because how dare it, it isn't even that cute.
@moth.faerie

yes omg this is exactly how I feel, like if I mess up a difficult thing that's ok because it's difficult but if something easy gets messed up its like 'why can't anything ever actually be easy' 😭
