Welcome back to more Autumn/Winter capsule sewing! Today, I am sharing another vintage style sewing project - a sleeveless, vest with lining aka waistcoat!
This lined vest pattern is inspired by a number of fashion scans and vintage sewing pattern illustrations from the 70's. In this video, I go through the steps to drafting the vest pattern using a bodice sloper, and sewing the vest with lining. Sewing this vest with lining was a bit tricky but the secret is in the side seams! ;)
This lined waistcoat is such a great addition to my autumn/winter wardrobe. I think I’m going to have so much fun playing with layers for my autumn/winter outfits!
P.S.: I also finally tried my vintage Singer buttonholer - check out how it sounds and works in this video.
Review this lined waistcoat tutorial (draft the vest top + sew the vest with lining) on my blog here: gwenstellamade.com/tutorials/...

As requested, I paused to respond: Audio quality is excellent, so far; crisp & clear with no background noise or other distortions. So, I appreciate your extra effort. Pausing to like, then back to the video. PS Your ideas of mix and match pieces for the capsule wardrobe look like wonderful choices. I'm interested to see what you pick next ( I think, tho, I am commenting a long time after you posted this. Infact, it looks like a year.) And, since you requested feedback, I think the vest looks really cute! I bet the armhole adjustment will make it a bit more comfy.

Thank you sooo much for this tutorial! I am in the middle of sewing a lined vest Butterick Pattern number 6843 and sadly, it seems there is a huge gap missing in the directions on how to sew the front to the back at the side seams. ❤❤❤ Love this! So cute! About the drag, verify that your back neckline isn't too small, because that will push out at the front as it tries to make up the space (I hope that makes sense?); I have had that issue before and it may also help with the extra shoulder width. It helped for me: I widened the back neckline, matched the original front neckline and trued the shoulders.

Hehe thank you for the suggestion! I have looked into it and I think it could be my sloping shoulders! I pinned the ends of the shoulders (the end next to the armholes) and there was no dragline. That said, I really oughta make a new sloper. This sloper I have is almost a year old. I'll check my back neckline when I do that too!! Hey, how about a sloper drafting / fitting video? XD

@@rd6203 It would be *a* sloper video but I can’t promise that it would be a *good* sloper video 😅 Well, I took the drafting classes years and years ago but never really used my sloper since because I had different priorities in my life then. So.. the first time I revisited it again was earlier this year! 😄

The slop of your shoulder seam is off, resulting in the bunching at the shoulder. Raising the shoulder at the neckline, then redrawing the shoulder seam to the existing point where it meets the armscye ought to do the trick.
@gwenheng

Yes I had an issue with the shoulders for the sloper I used in this series. Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't have this issue in the future! :)

Hi Ola! Thank you for watching! I haven't made a men's vest before but for a free option, I suggest searching for one online. I found this one but it's only one size: www.ralphpink.com/tommy-waistcoat-sewing-pattern/ For paid option, I found this Simplicity pattern: simplicity.com/simplicity/s1506 Etsy has tons of PDF sewing patterns too! Like I said, I haven't used any of these patterns so I can't vouch for their fit etc. But I hope this is helpful in getting you started. Good luck with your search and keep us updated!! xx G
