Velvet fabric makes such beautiful fashion pieces. But sewing with velvet can be tricky. There are many types of velvet. I go over the main ones here.. crushed velvet's, silk velvet, rayon and acetate velvet's, velveteen, velour, stretch velvet and cotton velvet. I also go over some tips on how to easily sew velvet, sewing lining to velvet and how to press and wash velvet.

I'm working on my very first velvet project right now. I have to tell you, I'm not enjoying myself. The good news is that I'm so stubborn and determined that I WILL learn how to sew it successfully. Thank you for all these good tips - you've shared stuff I haven't heard from others.

You can do it! I sewed alot with velvets when I made gowns in LA. I know the struggles, keep at it and use my tips and be patient!

Linda I am working on my first velvet fabric as well and im so scared lol but I just got done watching this youtube video before watching this one and let's just say it was so informative that I took down notes it was knowing how to work with velvet 101 everything that goes into ur do and don't with velvet and tips and tricks so I kinda know where to start with my velvet project a lil better I hope your velvet project is coming along well I'm gonna leave the link to the video underneath kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZ2HrcSElpmsiQ.html

@@katarinaencinia777 thanks for your comments. I wasn't able to get the YT link to open for me, but I did find an aftermarket velvet foot that had an adapter that would allow me to use it on my Bernina. I tried it on a sample last night. I couldn't even get my velvet to take pins without shifting, so I used some wonder tape on the very edge, set the stitch length to 4 mm and stitched very slowly. I ended up with a beautiful seam with no shifting. Rather than pressing or steaming, I just laid my tailor's clapper on top of the seamline for several hours. It came off the sewing machine looking fairly twisted, but the clapper sorted it out just fine. After a few hours I removed the wonder tape and laid the clapper over the fabric wrong side with the seam open. This morning it looked great. I'll do another experiment with a serged finish and see if that makes me happy enough to do some real sewing with velvet. I still have more work to do on my project, which I have been hand-sewing after much frustration and ruined fabric. Good luck with your project, and if you have any suggestions about how I can get the link to work for me that would be great! (is the problem maybe that I am in the U.S.?)

@@ljwilliams755I live in the U.S and here's is that link to that video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZ18it2SuJeXeI0.html So my guy friends birthdays coming up in march and this is my first time I ever get to do something for his birthday and It had me questioned for awhile on what to get him but when it comes to dudes clothes or food is the way to go when shopping for them lol so I have this huggle hoodies velvet fleece hoodies its one of those seen on TV hoodies well I look at it and I'm like that's it!!! Im gonna make a replica of this hoodie so that brings me to where I'm at now I tried to lay out my velvet fleece long wise but the patterns go over the salvages and their to big to lay down that way so I tried laying down the fabric wide wise I could lay down my pattern pieces that need to be cut on the folds but the layout doesn't look like it's suppose to look in the picture so I contacted a person from 5 out of 4.com that's where I got my hoodie pattern for a 2nd opinion and what she thinks I should do when it comes to the layout of my fabric

How do I find the grainline of velvet fabric?

Velvet is a woven fabric and has a length grain which always follows the selvage. To find the cross grain you clip it at the selvage and tear. The same as any woven fabric. There are the knit velour type fabrics those do not tear (knit) and they are not velvet.

I’m making a velvet blazer. I’m not sure how to do a sew in interfacing. Should I just cut it out while I’m cutting out the velvet and sew around the edges of each piece? I am planning on doing horsehair fabric in the front as well. I want the jacket to look structured but not really sure how to do it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, depends on what kind of velvet you are using? The weight of interfacing can really change the drape of any fabric. And it's adding interfacing can really make it different than you would think. (It is possible to use fusible if you use a needle board with velvet). Yes, on velvet, you would want to flat the interfacing, which is sewing around all the edges, making sure the top layer does not stretch differently than the interfacing.
