Thank you for this!! Finally decided after 30ish years of jabbing myself I’d figure out how to use my Grammy’s thimble. It made securing a loose bra hook so easy!!!!

I have known for decades about how to use a thimble since my grandmother taught me back in the 1960's and while in the Air Force used what I knew to hand sew my patches and insignias on my uniforms and did the same thing when I went to work in the prison system. I am retired now and just learning to sew using a machine. I learned to sew by hand using a thimble and ones with no holes in the end, but do remember seeing one tailor years ago using one with hole in the end, but didn't know why. Thanks for the information you have given us and hope it helps others as it has helped me.

I have quite a collection of too small thimbles. So not only did I not know how to use one, but they wouldn’t have fit anyway

I wonder if non-tailors use thimbles different from tailors. I have a thimble by Prym and while it's well made, the design makes it obvious that I have to push the needle from the flesh under the nail, not the side way that I'm used to.

I have a heavy duty plastic one from Dritz that isn’t a tailors thimble but works really well.

I tend to stab my thumb more on the opposite hand rather than my middle finger. Could I wear a thimble on the thumb too?

In theory your supposed to hold the needle with your thumb and forefinger. But if you need protection on the non-sewing hand, go for it! Most thimbles have a hole on the back of the packaging to try before you buy. Let me know how it goes!

I thought you're supposed to wear it on the thumb. Like a thumble. It worked for me. Hard to push a needle on 3 layers of denim, had to push it with my thumb.
