What a bizarre comment. I am sure they can execute a basic tendu and are perfectly aware of how to do a ronde jambe correctly. Why is this important?

Erin. Just my opinion. But it is important to have the proper turnout when executing a tendu and strong feet. Noticed many dancers were moving their hips during ronde de jambe. Probably the corps de ballet.

You're going way out on a limb here because there are dancers trained by the Paris Opera Ballet school, La Scala Ballet School, Kirov Academy, the Australian Ballet School, the Bolshoi, the Royal Ballet School, the School of American Ballet, the John Cranko School, the Shanghai Dancing School, the Goh Ballet Academy, the American Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Harid Conservatory, the Cuban National Ballet, and the San Francisco Ballet School - just to give a partial list of where SFB soloists have received their training. It's not really likely that they are all poorly trained in the basics as you are implying. And SFB wouldn't be considered a world class company if the level of talent and skill couldn't even meet basic criteria (ask a professional ballet dancer about SFB's reputation). There's so much more to this video anyway - enjoy the dancing!

The corp?

The Corps members come from many different places as well, and there's a large amount trained at SFB School. My guess? There are moments of missteps, bobbles and general nerves given that a huge audience will eventually watch these presentations. Principals are less likely to be bothered by all the media attention, but the young ones get nervous, get sloppy sometimes (but it all comes together in the end). And I've seen comments from individual ballet dancers saying that they are not crazy about having the general public view their classes because class is where they work on various things. And taking chances mean sometimes missing. ;) There are always moments when things go awry in the rehearsals especially - that's totally normal. But dancers often don't like to reveal how much work goes into the preparation. In the original 3.5hr version of the SFB section, the rehearsal footage is nice and long - and some people find it to be utterly boring, but I love to see how the repetiteurs coach the roles - both the older ballets (like the Robbins' piece) and brand new ones that are being created on these dancers (like the Ochoa ballet which doesn't have a name yet). FYI: SFB has to cut their segment way down due to copyright/contractual obligations with various choreographers and stage unions, etc. It's a bummer for us, but there it is. I recommend always downloading the original as soon as it becomes available.
