So this review popped up on my feed and I remembered your review being the reason why I took the journey into the Vorrh. I have completed the trilogy and it’s relentless all the way to the end. The ending is an extremely beautiful, visual, and appropriate ending that is earned. The last lines are so on point.

This video is deeply helpful in regard to understanding the plot of "The Vorrh." I'm currently reading. Catling's writing is some of the most beautiful and interesting storytelling I've encountered in my life, thus far. But I'm having a real hard time understanding the very surreal plot of this book.

I love this book so much, it's left me utterly spellbound. The wait for the next two entries in the series is going to be painful. Highly recommended.

What would be a good word to characterize your work? `Meritorious´ comes to mind. This introduction to, and review of B. Catling's The Vorrh, for example, is smart in a very helpful and humane manner. You take us readers seriously as intelligent people, without showing off, but in an enjoyable congenial way. Did I already mention helpful?

Okay, Thomas. I was intrigued when you had it in the mailbag and now that I've heard your description of characters and setting I'm convinced it is something I want to try out. You had me at "cyclops raised in a basement and educated by automatons".

I just finished The Vorrh! Excellent! "the untamed nature" as you refer to the Vorrh, that place where only the boldest of souls enter into its mysterious depths reminds me of that other type of wilderness where travelers may go mad or see visions: the desert, specifically The Rub al-khali, the great sand sea...what a wonderous book by Catling...so many thoughts pouring through my head. I must complete the trilogy

The Vorrh was a weird and wonderful one. I KNOW I didn't get a lot of the "deeper" (if there was any) meaning, but Catling's writing carries the books far and beyond any lack of accessibility to the subtext. Definitely felt like the writing "loosens up" after the first half or so, the poetic prose goes (a little too (imo)) hard in the first part and almost turned me off of the book, if not for the occasional sentence that really struck me as to how well written it was. Ended up liking the book far more than I thought I would as per the 100pg check-in mark, although I'm still not sure why. I think it's a combo of beautiful lines and sublte, yet hauntingly creepy ideas layered over one another. I'm not surprised that the book lacked a solid "ending" or conclusion in the traditional sense, I sort of felt that coming. Definitely need to read the other 2 in the series now! Thx for the vid man, very nice

I learned about this from Alan Moore, as I'm sure a lot of people did. It's certainly a book that I will have to give myself to if that makes any sense. Keep up the good work. Very saddened to hear about his death after starting this book, he was a truly talented fellow.

Wow. Im really suprised how differently people can read things. I'm happy that you were able to enjoy this book though. I thought it was very dissapointing. Catling is very obviously a poet, and he can obviously write, but I found it disturbing how little regard he had for plot. I don't think it is excusable to chalk it up to surrealist expetimentation either, I think the man had too many good ideas and couldn't decide which ones to keep or save for a rainy day. There is way too much happening with too little direction. I don't even think that Este the magic bow woman would be able to point him out of the Vorhh of a plot he made for himself. NEXT

That was an amazing review! You are articulate, informative and you truly care about the book. Thank you! Did you say this is the first book in the 'plant trilogy'? I just started reading this book..oh man, the writing style is hauntingly gorgeous. To me it almost feels like a blend of Tom Robbins and Neil Gaiman.

Just curious....has Caitling offended someone? I raged at the machines when I couldn't find any of his works in any of the major bookstores, I had to order! To make matters worse, once I devoured part one, I got all manic about grabbing part 2. By the time I got to the last book, I had lost some friends because they weren't down with the cyclops...Why were the books so " we don't carry that..." I single handedly made my B&N get the tril...but this was more than a year ago. Just wondering if he got on the wrong side of someone.

I don't know exactly what the sales were for The Vorrh, but it's not an uncommon thing to find sequels hard to get in brick-and-mortar stores unless the series has become a huge hit (say, Sanderson). Book ordering for major chains is done by software algorithms, not people. If book one of a series has a sell-through that is average or below expectations, orders for any sequels will automatically be adjusted downward. Often, this creates a feedback loop of diminishing orders that actually has a name: the "publishing death spiral." If you've ever wondered why that one writer who published a really nice little underhyped book a few years ago that you enjoyed hasn't released anything new lately, it's likely they got caught in the spiral.

i'm a little leery of colonialist era sci-fi that doesn't center the colonized people in non-exploitative ways, so i've avoided this one.
