See, the funny thing is, I've read alot of Abused/Neglected reader books involving RWBY. They are all hilariously bad, because it's the same process every single God damn time. The Reader leaves the family (literally 90% of the time it's the rose family even though its completely against their nature and who they are), the reader becomes "Powerful" and "OP", the reader meets Ozfuck in every single scenario which is the first episode of the series, half the time the reader is forced to go and the other half he just accepts it, the reader meets his abusive family due to them lying to Ozshit, Reader beats the fuck out of them (but it's mostly Tai), filler happens, and then the reader accepts the family's apologies because "Harem Reasons" and "I need to progress the plot so fuck it". It's all the same process, if your lucky, the author might actually do it right and demonstrate the actual effects of abuse, but like everyone here has said, they are mostly a diamond in the rough.

I think the reason why the Abused and Neglected tag is so popular is because it's easy to emotionally connect to the reader. So, essentially, it's just a lazy way to make conflict and make the reader feel bad for the main character.
