Photography as a medium is not over, but as a society that is constantly moving forward, technology evolves. And Since photography is grounded in technology (cameras, printing, digital, analogy), those technologies of old will eventual become extinct or rear.

Joel Snyder really enjoys eating time. It's not bad that he speaks a lot (even if tangents are the rule), the problem is in the disconnect and stagnation of his dialogue. Many assertions are made, and very few examples or complete explanations provided. 36:28-45:00 is an arguous, and sentimental rant on past gallery trends that curators and art gallery business had created themselves (a desire for large and expensive limited edition prints).

The exception could be the many photographers involved with Lenswork and other similar publications. Many photographers are sensitive to the taste and expectations of photo editors and curators. Photo publication and gallery work are an extension of patronage. The distinction is probably made between work photographs and personal enjoyment photographs. The same can be said on professional painters and musicians. Sometimes critique can be inert to art. J.A. Scheibe was no J.S. Bach.

Everything was done by the 1920's, we are just continuing the tradition.

While the title of this video can be very "shock value", the dialog that the video brings up in the comments is really interesting.

Quite a pretentious panel discussion. The equivalent would be "Digital imaging exists and continues to improve (i.e. easy for the masses): Are oil and acrylic over (as a craft)?" Though some motion picture circles try to distinguish photography from cinematography, it is also a sub-category of the light writing medium. Only when both motion picture and still life are turned into geriatric mediums of expression, will they be over.

Just because there are more throw-away photos and snapshots doesn't mean photography is less meaningful and impactful today. This group of "true" photographers are clearly just fearful of change and new technology. This fear of theirs definitely comes off as ignorance.....

I wish this were true. When I take my portfolio of photographic composites to a gallery for consideration, and the response is, "Sorry, this is not really photography," my first reaction is, "Well, we need to talk about this." And for me it has never been clear how best to begin this discussion? This panel presentation has provided me with invaluable insight of how best to address this situation "in the trenches" of marketing my work.

If these people think that Photography is over they're jaded and blind to contemporary art photography, like the work of Walead Beshty, or the established John Baldassari

oo the stuck up vision of possible failed art. there are more people this year online that help people conquer the amateur patterns. I agree with Bobby's comment below me, film was a huge thing... we saw digital from light years away.

The dawning of the new homogenous individual is defined by technology and shaped by history. It is now up to the individual artist whether or not to use a particular mode of capturing in order to express ideas. You can thank Nauman for that. Digital is preferred because it is easier. Capturing manually is more beautiful though because the process creates beauty. The world is a darkroom and the sun a printer. Analogue is becoming more special bc theres less people doing it - please stop whining

All these old people are so boring, I don't wanna be offensive but why are photographers always so conservative? If I'm not referencing to an older photographer in my work or say I did something in Photoshop they'll be like "oooh." as if that's a bad thing. You did the same shit in your darkroom, I'm just being modern.
