Actually, David, this is what's called a long landing... She let the airplane " float " way too long above the runway... When she crossed the runway threshold, she should have been at 50 feet or less, then made the touchdown within the 1500 foot marker... Good thing this runway is long, otherwise she would have run off the runway

Bluponi I once landed on LaGuardia runway 13 after the pilots allowed the 737-200 to float for too long. It was no fun watching runway pass by the window, but they got it down with plenty of length remaining.

now that i think about it i had one like that in JFk, but then i also had one where the guy wanted to put it on the green lights.. and slammed that 76-2 onto the runway. like slammed!.

Johnny Sadiq - I agree with the need to practice hand flying but in busy terminal areas disconnecting the AP at 10,000' really overworks the pilot monitoring. He needs to work the radio, run the checklist and keep the mode control panel set. In busy areas disconnect at or around the final approach fix after the checklists are done and the last frequency change has occurred.

That's not a seat belt but shoulder harness. Seat belt and shoulder harness are connected but can make it off separately.

Autopilot flew 99% of her flight, she turned autopilot off about 200 feet from landing. She blew the landing, floated 100 yards past touchdown point, captain was standing on the brakes when he took control of the bird back.

+Tampaslice She did float but every pilot out there does it from time to time. No pilot (No matter how good they think they are) will float from time to time during their career. Most pilots allow the autopilot to bring them to the inner marker and then disconnect, some don't. Personally I prefer to hand fly from 3,000 AGL down unless CAT II or III conditions and If I am unfamiliar with the airport and surrounding area. The Captain was not standing on the breaks also, its common practice to exit at the nearest taxiway to clear the active runway as soon as possible for other aircraft on approach. I personally think she did well and if she made it to Captain then she is doing it right. All Pilots no matter their skill level or how good they think they are, are always needing improvement somewhere. Remember, when a pilot claims or thinks to know everything there is to know about flying, is the moment they become dangerous and need to step out of the flight deck. God Bless! Captain Walton

Look at it again. The plane was flying itself through much of the clip. Additionally, before she gets to sit in that seat, she has done it correctly several dozen times in slightly smaller aircraft. They weed out the ones with your demeanor early on. There's possibly a few hundred passengers sitting behind her, that the aircraft company doesn't want to have to pay for, if she buys the farm.

Its not so manual in a civil airplane. She's only prepared for an emergency, not manually landing it.

It'll cost you $80,000 for flight school and certifications to become a commercial airline pilot. And you'll have to start out at a regional airline for $30,000 and have really shitty hours. Live the dream.

Long haul freight is great for getting flying hours but boring. I noticed the same thing. Back when I flew you really tried to land near the touchdown zone. It was not essential with a Cessna 172 but was essential with higher performance and large aircraft needing the entire runway length for normal operation. Have you noticed on many videos (made in the last 10 years) of airliner landings they land 1000 feet or more past the touchdown zone? Many are landing on a runway longer than needed, but it is not a good practice to get into using way too much runway length to land. A 737 can often land in 4500ft. and do all over the world. Unless the crew needs extra speed on approach or really intend to land long it should not be done. An assignment to an airport with a short runway could be tough when you land long all the time. I am glad your airline practices flying accurate approaches all of the time. I wish all airlines did.

The aiming point of all airliners is 1100-1500 feet from the threshold. There is a lot of aircraft behind the pilot and aiming this far in ensures adequate wheel clearance. We never aim for the threshold, that is something only light aircraft do.

The Cancun 12R is almost 10000 feet length, not so much a problem to delay 4000 from threshold!

Was a great career for me! Don't fly for a big airline making minimum wage, Fly a business jet like the Citation X, you'll make a years pay flying for company like Delta, in one month as an Instructor on a Citation! 29 years and14,000 hours later and I wouldn't change a thing!

Jordan Dawe Cannot agree: it put the main wheels down just after the second set of piano keys, exactly where I would expect the touchdown zone to be, as can be seen from the other tyre marks . Furthermore, I can hardly see the power levers being advanced from the flight idle position at all .

You obviously don't fly for a living, don't know how to spell flight director, or know pilot lingo, i.e. It's not auto thrust, its auto throttles. Using the autopilot/flight director and any other tools in the cockpit to help spread the work load, ease fatigue, and increase SA is always safer. Weekend warriors flying their 172 blab about not using the autopilot or flight director. Not using them if they are available to you is foolish. The only time using the autopilot is not safe would be below its specified minimum altitude for use.

I am an airline pilot for a U.S. carrier and I have been flying for over 23 years, I also served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years, and I have operated some very sophisticated aircraft!! Let me educate you a little, "auto throttles" and "auto thrust" do exist, they are two different systems. Auto throttles when engaged, the throttles are actually moving when the airplane is trying to maintain a selected speed hence; "auto throttles", auto thrust when engaged, the thrust levers (throttles) are NOT moving when the airplane is trying to maintain a selected speed only thrust changes hence; "auto thrust"!! The autopilot/flight direct"o"r is a TOOL and just a tool, for one there are two of us in the "flight deck".........(oooohhhh nooooo, I should of said "cockpit") to spread the work load, weather I am hand flying the airplane or using the autopilot the work load is the same, this is not a single pilot environment we fly in a two pilot environment so the duties are split. one pilot just flies (pilot flying) with or without the autopilot and the other pilot monitors/dose everything else (pilot monitoring)!! In fact these autopilot systems are so sophisticated with limitations sometimes it is easier and safer to hand fly the airplane, and to add to that sometimes the autopilot is deferred so it is not even available, so we will hand fly the entire flight..... Fact, resent airline accidents have been contributed to the "over use" and "reliance" of the autopilot systems. The only people I know that over use these systems are GA pilots and FSX gamers. The airline business is not joke, we are not there to play around if we are not using the autopilot its because the equipment is not available/legal or we feel it's much safer to hand fly the aircraft!!.........And I do prefer Boeing over Airbus!!!!
