SH-AWD Diagonal TEST: Acura MDX | Can it climb?

Car Question

6 жыл бұрын

The MDX is available with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which progressively distributes optimum torque not only between the front and rear axles but also between the left and right rear wheels. The system is complemented by Agile Handling Assist which employs the anti-lock brake system to individually brake either the left or right front wheel to reduce yaw delay to improve corner traceability and balance.
Up to 90-percent of available torque can be transferred to the front wheels during normal cruising. In hard cornering and under acceleration, up to 70-percent of available torque can be directed to the rear wheels to enhance vehicle dynamics. Up to 100-percent of the torque sent to the rear axle can be applied to either the left or right rear wheel, depending on conditions
On the road, it's one of the best AWD out there for cornering and having fun during the winter, but how about our famous diagonal test?

SHAWD really works. We see the driver is climbing on uneven surface with the front wheels turned (that’s a stopper right there). Try to put the front wheels on straight then push the gas pedal a little bit and it will climb easily. My MDX saved me so many times on cornering fast (over steer and under steer).

its not bad for what it is, i think the audis fancy diffs are better than this but then they probably cost 10x more so this is an ok tradeoff. from this video i wouldn't want to take this on any long crawling trails but if you need to go up a couple rocks on a gravel road it'll handle it fine

@@MadMadOne dude.. i've taken my 1998 tercel rock crawling(on some fairly tame trails). does great since the engine weight keeps the front end planted most of the time lol. i don't know how much ground clearance the audi has but its gotta have more than a sedan. i don't speak as a buyer of a new one, if i were to buy one it'd have 300k kms and then i could do whatever to it lol.

Very simple... at 0:40 the steering is completely turned to the left, so the SHAWD sends power to the rear outer wheel(the right one in that situation) but you can see the rear right wheel barely has traction since there isn’t much suspension travel on the MDX... so it doesn’t climb with that amount of power. Turn the wheel straight and 50/50 will be send to both rear wheels so it’s going to climb, like it did.

Thank you for explaining it to all these idiots calling SH-AWD "useless". If the guy had just kept the wheels straight and mashed it it would have gone up with no problem. I know from experience because I have a 2012 TL SH-AWD 6MT. If you want to send power to the rear without waiting for the system to figure it out, you just have to be heavy on the throttle.

SHAWD requires a driver with a little common sense. Typically if you know how the system works you can reap the most out of it. If you're dumb and do dumb things with it well it's not going to work well. Case and point the dumb people who tested the NSX and claimed it wasn't fast and then ironically enough in the hands of a good driver around Thermal for example, it does exceptionally well. But oh well. Acura apparently is dumb... ROFL

Other systems are designed to do different things though. This is one test. How often are you parked up on an incline pushing 20 degrees like that? What are you doing more often? Driving around a corner? Trying to drive through snow? When the test below was conducted people argued it favored the MDX when the irony is even snow tires were taken out of the equation just focusing on drivetrain. When the roller test is used people claim that that's biased. There is no winning. If you're a smart buyer you figure this stuff out. If you're a buyer who doesn't care you cling onto the brand one finds best and assume that everyone else is stupid... Hence the reason why you see so many claiming Subaru's open diff 4wd system is the best. Cheap lightweight car with average awd system as opposed to a torque vectoring performance system that actually feels great to drive. You have to be a half decent driver with the ability to understand how things work. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZeZbN2mu9i7no0.html

Thanks for that. I am impressed with the MDX. Low clearance, highway tires, and all. Not sure my Ram 1500 4WD could do much better with the limited slip differential based on the videos I have seen. I hope you are leaving the proving grounds, headed directly to a tire store. The only time I treat my tires like that are when they are at the end of their life. That's when it's time to have fun and shred them in a big parking lot somewhere. It's nice to know that my newly acquired wife-wheels might get her out of some stupid predicament without me having to employ tow straps.

1. I wish they would show the SH_AWD dash board to show where the power is going. 2. I have done this same test outside, rain conditions, with grass in my 2011 RDX with Sh-AWD and it worked very well. Even popped the wheels. It can take a second, but it will work. the SH-AWD system is just as comparable to the Audi and Subaru.
@motorhead_jt21
@motorhead_jt21 6 жыл бұрын
alex martens Quattro Torsen and Subaru's Symmetrical systems are a little bit better still though. Mainly because they both maintain 50% or more torque to the rear wheels at all times, whereas SH-AWD waits for slippage to occur before it sends more than 10% torque to the rear. Other than slippage, the SH-AWD will also send more torque to the rear when cornering (obviously), going up steep hills, and under heavy acceleration. I love my SH-AWD, and it did AWESOME in the snow up in hilly Morgantown, WV. Quattro Torsen and Subaru's Symmetrical are another beast though, and are made for different purposes really (rally racing, off-road).

Awesome points. I think what's interesting though is if you watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibZid7qWsJq1e3U.html - it's another video though that does show that the SH-AWD is comparable. I don't think one can truly be the test, because conditions and needs for AWD vary way to much.

Love seeing sh-awd in action. The MDX isn't a purpose built offroad vehicle. It is designed to compete with similarly priced luxury brands with a heavy lean towards "Sport" in the SUV acronym instead of "Utility" for mostly paved road use. That is why Honda makes the Pilot, Ridgeline, and Passport if you need more Utility and less Sport from the sh-awd system. I upgraded from a 11 MDX Adv to a 19 MDX Adv Sport Hybrid. Any videos on this test with the hybrid powertrain?

@@SkylineLofe The Acura MDX is a pretty good "jack of all trades" type of vehicle. It isn't a standout in any one area; but, it has a lot of flexibility to cover almost every driving situation, driver type, and environment (no deep water above the floor). You might have to make a few modifications to the braking, suspension, tires, and more frequency servicings for extended off-road use. Hopefully, you have the sh-awd version.

You have no clue what you're talking about. The system uses yaw sensors and steering angle to determine how to split torque. The vehicle is on an incline with its wheel turned. It sends power to the outer wheel like most driving situations would require. The system has an active diff while the forester has brake actuated torque vectoring which is garbage compared to this. In fact BMW and Acura both have some of the best AWD systems starting at the 40k mark. Audi offers active diff's at 70k. Anything below that are all brake actuated. People need to look through the marketing and see how the system actually works.

It's the tires. Low pro. If it had smaller rims with thicker tires it would do better.

You are wrong. If you look at the other wheels that's not spinning, they are not moving. They are not slipping. It's the AWD issue.
@waseemsells5378
@waseemsells5378 6 жыл бұрын
No, the AWD system is fine. If you know anything about modern cars when all systems are turned on the system will cut power if the wheel slips. I've upgraded tires on the and system and it made a world of a difference in these extreme situations.

Also, a thicker profile tire would allow the tire to flex and grab better.

Wrong again. When AWD system detects wheel slips, it knows that which tires it needs send power to. It's not sending enough power to the non sliping tires. This is not just tire issue. This is SW-AWD issue. This is a known issue.

No. Look a the video again. Non slipping tires are NOT moving. it has enough grip but power BUT power is not not sent to the NON SLIPPING TIRES. ITS NOT SLIPPING AT ALL.

I don't understand what is the point in doing these test as awd cars are not designed to work like 4wd cars which works flawlessly on low speeds but are not Designed to work @ faster speeds and that's why where awd system comes in to help car to have better traction control on roads but they are not designed for off road capabilities these tests are more designed for 4wd cars like range rover, Toyota land cruiser they are built to crawl or Cruise through these off road tests to me using Acura mdx, Mazda cx9 or cx5 or Subaru for off road capabilities is just waste of time

The MDX is my family hauler. We get snow here and deal with mud. While I won't be crawling through the woods anytime, I still don't want to get stuck. So far after a year of ownership, this MDX has been a wonderful family car. Sat we rolled to the big city for a sporting event. At 75 mph it was quiet and composed. Took it up to 105 mph for ten minutes or so and the only clue of the speed was that the expansion joints for bridges were rougher. We're usually traveling with four people total, sometimes plus the family dog. Plenty of cargo space for us. This MDX replaces our Gen 1 CRV with AWD which never failed us in 300K miles no matter the weather. It suffered from high cabin noise. The AWD was much more primitive but always got the job done. Not nearly as stable on slippery surfaces as the MDX. We keep the CRV around for local commuter use. The mDX is intended to be more of a weekend ride (cheaper b/c it is fully depreciated). Wife and I carpool.

I took my Acura MDX to Poland where I can drive much faster than in US. Unfortunately, the engine cuts of the fuel at around 200 kilometers per hour (about 124 mph). But I drive from time to time 180 km/h (112 mph) for prolonged of distance with no problems. Well, with one problem. Fuel consumption. Driving 120 km/h (75 mph) it is 23 mpg. At 150 km/h (93 mph) it goes down to 20 mpg. At 180 km/h (112 mph) it is only 17 mpg. And fuel in Europe costs now around $5.40 per gallon. Driving fast is possible here, but expensive.

SH-AWD is not designed for this. It’s designed for handling on road not off road. In which case it easily beats all other AWD systems. You want a rock climber get a truck. You want a rally car, get a Subaru.

Just don't forget - the vehicle will fall apart in no time. Having owned a Honda once, never again. Chassis ripped apart by the suspension - literally falling apart - no old versions of any Honda's around except the real vintage ones. I would never trust them again. CRX owner. Was my dream car that turned in to a true disaster due to bad build quality. And look at that, you don't see them on the road anymore. Gone. Take that as a tip when it comes to Honda, buy new and then see you!

Only for the 10-13 MDXs had oil consumption compared to the 2000-2023 run for all MDXs. The tq converter issue was narrowed down to the VCM engaging and most tq converters were fixed under the 6/70,000 warranty.

@mrgold35 I assure you, Honda and Acura are not the companies they were in the 90s. Had a long run of transmissions and engine issues. Using timing belts, and direct injection without tuned port is piss-poor engineering. Shame on Honda, they know better. Toyota is the gold standard. People that know cars and understand engineering all agree. Good luck to you. Cheers!

@mrgold35 You're a lucky person, did you know there was a class action lawsuit? A lot of people won't touch the 3.7 liter cars. In fact, they stopped production years ago. The 3.5 liter was okay. Currently, those engines are direct injection only, no port injection. Your intake valves will get caked with carbon deposits, it's headed your way. Read about walnut shells and the expensive involded. Honda/Acura knows better but quality is not their game anymore. I read about car engineering and development everyday. People that truly know cars, don't mess with Honda/Acura products anymore.

@@greasyhitchball I have an 19 MDX hybrid with a 3.0L v-6 port injection. My 18 RLX hybrid and all other 3.5L DI engines position the injectors to spray over the intake valves to reduce the carbon buildup compared to what you see with other manufacturers that spray directly into the cylinders. I just sold my 11 MDX with the 3.7L and 155,000 miles and it used 1.5 qts per 9500 mile oil change interval. My 06 tsx (+176,000 miles) and 08 rdx (+200,000 miles) had no trans or oil burning issues. Not sure the issues you are talking about are from personal experiences or internet readings?
