To be honest, I'm not sure I can ever see the rest of the world accepting Chinese Hip Hop culture as real Hip Hop culture. It has nothing to do with whether Drill requires gang culture or not, but the fact that musicians have to be careful about the content of their lyrics in China means that it will never have the freedom of expression that makes Hip Hop so important as a culture in the Western world. There's a limitation to the freedom of expression in Chinese rap and so China cannot fully embody the spirit of Hip Hop, let alone Drill. From that standpoint, whether Drill or Hip Hop, nothing about Chinese rap would feel real to the originators and forefathers of rap music. Which in my opinion is fine as long as we personally enjoy the music.
