Wow, Is this fun! I am making the bag right now. I highly recommend this pattern. The interfacing makes it go together so perfectly. One pattern correction to add: In step 2 of the Gem bag binding directions, it says to cut two strips WOF for the binding . It was NOT enough. I found THREE strips will work. Otherwise so far , so good. Thank you SF :)

The sharpness of two tones would give this bag a very modern, striking look. My pick would be Ombré Metallics in Plum and Honey. Best of both worlds: variation and contrast.

Love this bag, and you did a great job explaining the process and pitfalls. Still not sold on the raw edge wrapping method for the cording. It seems that over time, with the cording moving in and out of those grommets, the fabric will fray more and more. Is there any other method or cording that could be used that would still look attractive and contain a more finished edge (and eliminate fraying)?

Hi Patricia- We're happy you enjoy this fun project! Instead of choosing the raw edge wrapping, you could do the same thing, except iron in a 1/4" hem onto one side of a 1.25" strip. Hope that makes sense!! 😍 -Michelle

I am in the middle of making this bag and need a little advice. I've completed the diamonds panel - meaning all of the 1/4" seams have been sewn according to the back of the template. I've pressed and trimmed it all around. I'm now forming the "sandwich" that will be quilted. For extra stability, I decided to add a layer of heavy Decovil into my tote. So what I have is the diamonds panel, then the flex foam, then Decovil, then my lining fabric. This makes for a pretty thick sandwich. What I'm wondering is if I should adjust my presser foot pressure (less?) and/or use a longer stitch when I quilt everything together. Thoughts?

Hi Annie - We would definitely recommend that you make a test quilt sandwich with your additional layers and adjust your machine as needed. Hope this helps! -Michelle
