He was born for this role, I mean he looks almost exactly as Shackleton himself...

Endurance was built like brick outhouse. She was brand new Norwegian built hunting tourists vessel ment to operate in Arctic. She just was not Fram. Only Fram could had managed such pressure. They were unlucky (also foolhardy not listening Norwegians) and got ship stuck during very bad year on Weddell gyre pushing ice towards continent/peninsula of Antarctic. Shackleton did not financially have options. Only go ahead or came back home.

BTW The Danish vessel which acts as Endurance in this mini series is refreshingly quite similar as Endurance. Almost exactly same size and same sail plan. Not vessel for Arctic but to film making purposes that does not matter.

McNish saying shes built wrong is incorrect statement. Fram could rise on ice pressure, but in every other way she was very poor vessel. Nansen and yard made no compromises. Endurance was built to move on water too. Fram was ment ONLY to live stuck in ice.

Thanks for the detailed info. Some of that I didn’t know. This story fascinates me. I’m glad I was able to find an older film of its story.

My favorite movie! Have it on DVD plus the bonus material. Watch it once a year, usually on a super cold, snowy day.

I reckon they got the right man to play Shackleton. Branagh even looks a bit like him.

Brits at those times critisized Amundsen for feeding weaker dogs to others, and or eating dogs themselves. Endurance expedition did it. Australian expedition years before even wanted to purchase dogs as fodder, with non what so ever aim to use some of them, other than as meat source. Australians, wo hadnt foggiest idea how to handle dogs as strong, up to 100 pounds, let their dogs freely kill and maim each other. Aussies were propably scared shi....s of those dogs. In hands of Amundsens crew, alpha males who tried to kill each other or massacre pack would get firm but non damaging beating, after which all was all right. Norwegians also knew which dogs should be kept separated of which dogs. There was separate areas where some were in leach, so that pack leaders, humans, had to keep eye on them only during sledging. Amundsen and 2 of his polar team had YEARS of experience and inuit education how to handle dogs.

Shackletons Endurance expedition had only Hurley, who had seen how Aussie expedition misused their dogs. That does not mean he had knowledge how to teach Britons to control sledge dogs. There was supposed to be Canadian dog "expert" , but he vanished. There would had been atleast dozen or 2 Norwegian real experts to ask to join, many in merchant marine and good english skills. But still in 1914 it was Britons vs common sence. Years after Scott and his team had died.

Yes absolutely gutting espeacially when approaching the Pole and seeing, I think a small Black flag and then naturally a Norwegian one closer up, Amundsen had come and gone. What Cpt Scott and his comrades went through is absolutely tragic whilst regularly updating his Diary.

Endurance was built like brick shithouse. Norwegian yard made her for Arctic. She was also brand new. Shackleton should had ofcourse heed advice he was given (and let expedition fail because costs). That year was not for venturing to Weddell sea at that time technology. Nansens Fram could had most propably handled the ice without being sunken, and BTW She was in South America at some pierside (would had needed time and money in repair yard). Even she could had only floated with ice, not proceed to continent.
@tonyuppal89564 ай бұрын
@kimmoj2570. Yes you are absolutely right, the should've heeded what the Whalers and Captains advised on Sth Georgia. The Weddel Sea was extremely IcePacked ridden and espeacially at this season which was still Summer. I suppose though I can see it from Shackleton's point as he didnt want to wait around and Could Not go back home with his tale between his legs so speaking. It was all Plan A and Plan B was to enforce Plan A.
