Decided to review my SH40 Shad Topbox!

Edit: As of September 2014 it is still going strong. Only issue I had was about 6 months ago I went for a ride on an extremely long and bumpy road and one of the bracket bolts came loose and fell out. Had to fix it with zip-lock ties temporarily and buy a new bolt. Nothing too dramatic and only $2 of out pocket. My fault really for not regularly checking the tightness of the bolts.

I just bought though my local bike shop a full set of side panniers and top box from Shad. Hopefully delivery will be soon but no rush. Have an upcoming trip to tassie and don't want everything strapped down to the seat. Getting 42lt for the sides and 48lt for the top box. Should be good!

They were just car speakers so not that big but the box was long. On second thought my craziest thing was actually a brand new laptop! The box wouldn't fit in the topbox so I unboxed it, put the laptop in the topbox, flattened the boxes, and sat on them! I got it on film, will be in about 2 videos time lol.

I wish I had one of those sometimes but $410 is a bit much to fork out for something I would rarely use. The biggest thing (and craziest thing) I ever carried on my bike was a set of speakers (about 80 litres worth). My rear seat is bigger than yours and close to the height of the main seat (1 whole unit) so it was easy to tie down the stuff with lots of those stretchie things. I didn't want to go too fast though because I was concerned it would fall off. I did hit 80 kph on the freeway though.

Yeah top boxes are bloody awesome. From memory yours is a lot bigger than mine, don't think I could fit both my helmet and my jacket in mine. I keep heaps of junk in mine constantly. Rain gear, hook-ties, etc. I haven't used the flat top with hook-ties yet, but yeah I think it is supposed to be used for camping mostly.

Yeah it is a bit pricey although on most bikes you don't need the bracket so it would probably only be around $200. It was worth it for me because I use it every day. That's crazy with those speakers! I think the craziest thing I ever carried were speakers too but they were a lot smaller haha

Great review mate. Just wondering how the box is holding up? I was researching between givi and shad and from what iv read the majority of ppl say the givi is a better build and less prone to fall apart? Thanks in advance

I've had it for about 9/10 months now and it's still going strong. Only problem I had was one of the bolts holding the bracket in place (the bold to the left of the "SHAD" logo at 0:50) came lose and fell out during a long ride over extremely bumpy and pot-holy roads. Took it easy to a hardware store and got it fixed for $2 lol. My fault for not checking then often I guess. Other then that it's been great. A very happy purchase. Shad is a lot cheaper than Givi so based on my experiences with Shad I would buy Shad again.

Awesome. Maybe them anti vibration nuts are the go. U know the ones with that plastic ring in them. Will have the sh40 soon :) Thanks again

Did you had to drill holes to your case for the back rest installation? Just got mine too (exactly like yours, and.... I thought it was a simple clip-n-go, but.... yeah lol Any thing I should know before I start drilling? Thanks man

VroomToRaftel Yeah just drill two small holes where the indents are. It's because the back rest is an optional extra, so if you didn't get the back rest it would still be water proof.

Do you have any freeplay of mounting plate with this kind of rack? I've similar one on Honda and after tightening up it still have some freeplay and top box while it sits well in plate it still moves a little bit forward and back with together with plate.
