Great video, and very detailed and informative. Question: Can you use salt in a 30 gallon minnow tank?
@jbolin105
@jbolin105 5 жыл бұрын
Good video Chris. I always thought time of year helps to. Summer time it's a lot harder to keep shad alive. Winter time seems a lot easier. The amount of bait your trying to keep alive factors in also. I would say in your tank on larger shad 2 to 3 dozen would be the number. I'm sure you could get by with more but I think 2 or 3 dozen would keep the bait more hearty. When I'm using shad as cut bait I have always preferred to have them alive when I cut them. Just my preference.
@chrissouders476

Thanks Buddy and yep your absolutely right time of year and size of baits always plays a big factor in it. I normally suggest and stick to the one shad per gal on normal conditions and then less than that in hot months

Great Video Chris. One question, should I add a little extra salt and chemicals in summer time to allow for the chlorine in the ice I add. In summer it gets mighty hot around here and I like to add ice ever so often. Thanks
@chrissouders476

Thank you and no I don’t think so. But I’d be careful adding ice to the water anytime I’ve ever done it it’s caused more issues than good.

SS earl in a dam setting Im going to figure your trying to fish some sort of seam. Some times you will have to move just a little bit to one side or the other to get the boat set up right on the seam. But as swift as the current is at dams I wouldn’t recommend you use a drift sock but if you did a very small one just because of the dangers that can arise so quickly. Be very careful in those dams. The fishing can be good but the dangers are multiplied greatly.

I have oval shaped livewells in my Champion to keep them out of the corners. I wonder if constant recirculated lake water would be better than using treated water with the circulated lake water turned off like when the lake water temps are in the 70s ?

Hey Chris I haven’t started using shad yet but have minnow and chub live well tanks. Question is what does the salt do? And do people use salt in home bait tanks for other fresh water bait?
@chrissouders476
@chrissouders476 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom Beckett it helps harden scales and rejuvenate the baits slime coat and reduces the effects of stress on shad. Shad can be very difficult to keep alive for very long they get stressed very easy. Creek Chubs and Bluegills the salt is not needed, they are very hardy! Now with that being said salt won’t hurt other bait either. I keep other bait in with my shad and also add some salt to the water even if I’m not using shad just to help condition the water. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

Hey Chris, I am keeping shad alive a little better every trip. I put them in a big treated tube of well water to poo. Then after about 25 shad for 15 min I put them in my treated live well water with my minnow net. My problem is that my pump filter gets clogged up so easy. I have a clap on battery type with the spray bar and suckencups and filter in the bottom. Any suggestions????
@chrissouders476
@chrissouders476 4 жыл бұрын
If it has the filter on the bottom you could make it bigger or you could do a little diy project out of pvc pipe that it could sit in and have filters on top of it that way you would have more surface area to filter. Let me know if that helps. Thanks for watching

@chrissouders476

Jacob I would recommend a 29-31 series marine battery. Those will normally run a tank for up to 24 hrs depending on the size tank you have.
@jimjeffcoat5688
@jimjeffcoat5688 11 ай бұрын
Maybe I silly question but how many thread finshad or gizzard shad per gallon of tank you are using . To fish in 24hr will that tank will keep alive. Thanks for your information 👍
@chrissouders476

Normally I recommend 1 per gal if they are large (10-12 inches). 2 per gallon if they are 8 inches. 3 per gallon if they are 5 to 7 inches. And if they are smaller 4

How do you keep your bait at temperature in the summer
@chrissouders476
@chrissouders476 4 жыл бұрын
Great question James. I start with tap water. Then I make sure not to overload the tank keeping it to 1 big shad per gal of water. I try to make sure to keep them out of direct sun light if possible and at times add ice to the filter side But keep in mind fluctuating the water temp up and down is just as hard on them as hot water.

You use "TAP WATER"? Are you on "CITY WATER" or a "WELL"? HUGE difference. City water is treated with chlorine. Well water comes right out of the ground. Also, water temperature between the river where you caught the shad and the tank. Is there a dangerous difference if the tank is warmer or cooler than the water they just came out of when you caught them?

Depending on the boat often times a baitwell in a boat will have corners and the shad will swim into the corner and drown, bait tanks are made round or oval so there are no corners so the shad continuously swim

yeah I got a question. I know this is an old video but.... why do you take a freshwater fish out of the lake and then stick them in a tank full of salt water, I don't get it. I have a friend who's a lake striper guide he tells me the same thing and he has no earthly idea why he just does it. As a saltwater fishing guide myself I never take a saltwater fish and stick it in tap water. I use menhaden, the toughest fish in all of saltwater to keep alive, and kickin, but at the same time we don't try to keep them in a tank for days. No one adds anything. We use recycled bait tanks, water on water out. Don't understand why you guys just don't do that. Other than trying to keep these bait fish alive for days.

Made my own bait tank after seeing the price on the tank youre recommneding. Not alot of us fisherman especially with todays cost can justify the price of these bait tanks. Even 1400 dollars is to much for us fisherman on a budget. My bait tank i built out of a 120 quart ice chest and i can keep my shad alive all day. Im sorry sir like i said most of us budget fisherman are on strict budgets and cant justify the $1400-$3500 cost of these tanks
