Planting a tough full shade area of the garden where nothing seems to grow. I'm trying a shade rockery to see if lifting the plants will help them grow properly.

Seeing you placing the rocks like that give me motivation to tackle the one area in my garden. It's not leveled so I always hesitate. Maybe I should just placing rocks around it like you do and see if it looks better. Thank you. I really like your beautiful garden 🥰

Thank you! The shade rockery is thriving and I’m so excited about it. It’s always a win when you finally find the thing that works for a difficult area. You are right, the very term ground COVER, points to it’s ability to spread. They are work but so worth it! I also love a bit of chaos in the garden so I’m happy when they get a bit naughty. Have a great day Judy!

Well done Nicole. Why wouldn't Dolce "Wildberry" coral bells; Midnight Rose Coral bells; Heuchera; Foxglove; Dead Nettle; Foamflower; or Primrose. I've had some pretty pathetic areas that got limited sun, and all those did very well in the areas. I love love love HOSTA's. also there is the option of Irish moss [ground cover]. It's so lovely.

Hi! Hmm did you watch the whole video? I have Irish Moss, Dead nettle, coral bells all in that area but it doesn't do well, that's been the issue. I also love Irish Moss but it's a pain in the butt because it isn't aggressive enough to shade out weeds and is high maintenance. My garden is too big for high maintenance ground covers so I grow it in pots mostly. The plants that were used in this video solved the problem and all are doing well. Thanks so much for watching!

Thank you🙏! I have both of those plants in my larger gardens but wasn’t prepared to gamble with pricey plants in this area until I figured out what the problem was. I don’t know why but astilbe and lungwort are so expensive in my area. This area is doing really well now so I think the rocks have stopped the continual washing away of nutrients during our storms. Hmm i like it the way it is but yes those types of willows are fine to prune. You do lose the beautiful weeping habit though. If it was any fuller it wouldn’t fit in that space. We already have to prune it monthly so we can walk under it 😂

I enjoyed this and your shade bed video. My shade is much deeper than yours - not really any indirect light even. I love impatiens with hostas and must remember to do that. I have a hosta planting under some acers and fir trees and can't wait to see how it looks this year. I have an issue with slugs and wonder if you do and if so, what is your method of control? I've got an eco-friendly slug bait.
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The aperature on the camera lens makes the gardens look much brighter than they actually are. Yes, we have a lot of slugs and I use a few types of control...one is baits, beer traps, they love cat food so you can catch a lot that way (you just have to remember to check the bowl every night). I also have been only planting the thicker, more leathery leafed hostas which seem to hold up better to them.

Love your rock garden! I see that you have a beautiful Rhododendron, is that the Laurel one? I have one we dug up from my mothers house before her home sold. Also, I wasn't sure how close you can plant it next to a building/house. Does it cause any growth problems as far as roots?
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! That is a Rhododendron Catawbiense. Most Rhodos are good selections for foundation plantings as they do not form thick taproots and most of their roots are shallow and superficial. Although I have this one trained as a tree, it's still technically a shrub. You will want to keep all foundation plantings pruned at least a foot away from the house for good airflow around the house and plant. We only have to do this once a year after this shrub blooms. Some websites will tell you 3 to 4 feet from the home but in a small suburban garden that would take up too much space. One foot has worked great for me and after 21 years I have no cracks in my foundation that would require repair.

What ratio of potting soil, cow manure and holly tone did you use. Cow manure can burn plants that is why I asked. You made that a very pretty spot.

Hello, I only use fully composted cow manure which will not burn your plants (it also has very little odor). Approx. 1/2 cow manure and 1/2 potting soil and about a cup of Holly Tone for this area since it was not mixed into the soil and would be slowly brought down by our critters (worms, etc.). This area is growing great, thank you so much!

Nicole, could you, please, tell me how much light during the day gets your wonderful rhododendron? I have a shady garden, but would love to plant rhododendron!!

It's on the north side of my house and it gets only about 45 minutes of direct sunlight a day. It's also surrounded by 25 foot high evergreens. Rhodos bloom well in the shade or in partial sun. I have smaller/new rhodos in complete shade and they also bloom.

Hi 👋! Lavender, sage, Columbine, cat mint or nepeta, marigolds, bee balm, periwinkle , delphinium, yarrow and hibiscus, sedums /succulents are never touched in my garden. Nothing is bullet proof but as your garden grows I find you notice the damage less. They always eat my thin leafed hosta but not the thicker leathery leafed ones and absolutely drill my roses and dianthus into the ground. The more clover I provide for them in my grassy areas the less they eat my plants so think about a clover patch somewhere, it helps a lot for me.
