Pro tip- replace the bolt that secures the pre-tensioner above the hydraulic tensioner. The bolt will stretch and yield when it’s over tightened and when it does it’ll slacken the timing belt significantly. Also move to a 3SX solid tensioner, and move to a Kevlar reinforced Gates “Blue” Racing belt. Also Try to run a set of ARP 2000 Head bolts, and a Cometic Head Gasket set. These few changes alone will get rid of this ever happening to you again. On a side note, you deserve a medal 🏅 my friend. Having never worked on a car much before and diving balls deep into a Z16A is no easy task. I commend you! Also, hooning the car and seeing you handle it, you have some driving skills too which is refreshing. Made the slide through the corner look super easy and I love it- I periodically check my timing belt and recently just downed my VR-4 because my tensioner failed on me without my knowledge. I caught the belt slack even though the car still ran perfectly, and went ahead and pulled it apart. It’s never a bad idea to pop the front covers off the valve cover and just check the belt where it drops down to the water pump for slack. If you see a bit of slack you know you need to pull it down and check the tensioner. You did an awesome job man! Can’t wait to see this beast running again!

Hey man - just a quick tip for when you're going to run a solid tensioner. Make sure you use a different (smaller) washer on the outside of the tensioner bracket. The reason is because the angle of the belt changes just slightly enough to the point where it will rub on that washer that slightly protrudes from the tensioner bracket, causing the belt to shred and timing to jump again. Ask me how I know lol. Just wanted to hopefully save you some headache next time you're rebuilding the car.

9:25 not sure if you know, but the transfercase area is a weak point, they sell brace for it so it doesn't tear it apart.

If you really want to keep the car. Give it to a machine shop with all the parts let them spec it out and machine what is needed and you can put it together if you want to be more hands on the build. I enjoy your video cause I don’t know much but I try to do things my self also. Have a few friends that’s it’s there profession and hobbies so I get alot of good info. When you get it back together it’s always good to get it tuned. The car looks great it’s really worth saving.

Dam shame the Hydraulic tensioner went. Did the solid tensioner on my build along with the gates blue belt and non-adjustable pullies. So far its been about a year and a half and no issues with timing. Mines an SL with a different kind of build, but the engines are basically the same. Save i went all-motor for my SL. Since i was going High rpm/High compression 13:1 and 9krpms. It was neccesary to go solid. Hydraulic tensioners can't take the rpm's and the adjustable pullies tend to slip and cause all sorts of problems. But gotta check the tensioner every oil change. and tension the belt to the letter. Cut a chunk out of the plastic timing cover to get to that tensioner lol.

Most excellent job. Young fella really good film. You might even have to rebuild it again. After what kind of timing built tensioner was it? I have a hydraulic one that I don't have confidence in. Like I said, excellent job on the. Rebuild excellent job on the video. Congratulations.

Ahh yes. Me and this car have lots of history. It’ll be back. Gonna run a solid mechanical tensioner next time and hope that solves this issue. Nothing but problems lol.

It’s never the cars fault lol. Don’t run a solid tensioner either! Just get one direct from Mitsubishi. I can’t even tell you how many timing jobs I’ve done on these cars, and as long as you use quality parts, and don’t reuse things that shouldn’t be reused, they will run perfectly !! Comment back if you need help sourcing anything.
