Shadow Hearts: Covenant is a beloved PS2 RPG, and an entry that defines the Shadow Hearts saga for many. Mixing it's core JRPG gameplay with horror & comedy elements, the game is nothing if not unique. In this video, I explore Covenant's vast weirdness, analyzing the plot & seeing how the game stands the test of time.

I like when sequels are based on bad endings because it means in the universe where the good ending happened they just live happily ever after, and whatever nightmares that take place in sequels aren't inflicted on the characters.

Don Bluth's Anastasia was one of my favourite movies as a kid (and tbh still to this day) so I might check this game out. Also this game came out in 04 and her body wasn't found till a few years later. This would've been during the theory that Anastasia survived the massacre was still around and what the cartoon movie was about.

I LOVED this game back when I first played it. The absurdism, the deadpan humour. The improved graphics, the weird as hell story that bounces between being hilarious and heartbreaking. It's so underrated, so I truly appreciate you covering it. My best bud and me have been going on and on about Shadow Hearts sadly being a dead franchise, but maybe Pennyblood will hopefully re-invigorate it. I'd love to see a game achieving well-deserved success in its footsteps. Thanks for the video, man. I truly think you did a lot of barely listened-to people a huge favour by making this, putting it into the spotlight for once. Kudos to you! Just a little addendum concerning the OST: Yes, the majority was penned by Hirota. Some standouts by Mitsuda. But, also, Kenji Ito (Joachim Theme) and Tomoko Kobayashi. Let's not forget their contributions to such a weirdly engrossing game.

I loved the subversion of tropes with the Mistletoe curse. Getting cursed to die is nothing new in RPGs, and in any other game you would go on a grand adventure which would eventually result in some obscure method of curing the curse and living happily ever after. Not so in this game. You're cursed very early on, by a somewhat minor character, and you're told quite bluntly that there no cure. At all. Ever. And that never changes throughout the game. Yuri's fate was decided during the tutorial dungeon and he never uncovers a method of subverting it.

Veronica does NOT randomly pick a party member. Who she picks is based on which answers you give to her questions at the start of the sequence. For clarity's sake, since you skipped it in your SH1 review; Amon was the second-most powerful Fusion demon for Yuri (behind the Seraphic Radiance) in the first game. It originally belonged to Albert Simon, but if you earn all six of Yuri's elemental Level 3 Fusions, a secret Destruction Stone can be looted in the room before the fight with Simon. Simply beating Simon with the Destruction Stone in your inventory transfers the Amon Fusion to Yuri. This explains why Yuri starts with Amon in SH2's story and why Simon's spirit appears at the end of the mission to upgrade it to Neo Amon in SH2. The reason Kato's soldiers are called The Mutant Apes is because the name is literal - they actually WERE Apes that Kato mutated into humanoids. Raiden was the first-born, and underwent the most rudimentary form of the procedure, which is why he appears most ape-like. Ouka was the most recent mutation, having undergone a perfected version of the procedure, which is why she appears most human-like.

@@gotinogadenI absolutely hated new world for the idea that they made the MC basically a kid of a clone of Alice and attributing that Alice to have been a clone all along (even when Yuri mett her). Not to mention the fusion system was VERY weak and the story tried way too hard to reach back into stuff that happened in SH1&2 whilst trying to spin it with a completely new story and a new cast... SH1 & 2 were finished at that point... SHNW trying to hook back into that left some major plotholes the writing simply couldn't fix BECAUSE SH 1 & 2 were finished

A bunch of characters from this appear in Chaos Wars, which is pretty well known for having a downright terrible translation. @@Domar7431Makes sense to me. Even if it's an unconventional spelling, Yuri/Uri is a pretty common name in Eastern Europe. I'd say that, for stories set in European-inspired settings, the name of a character in Japanese is often a rough approximation of something that would be more commonly said and written differently, in order to make it work with the phonetic quirks of the chosen writing system. It's like how Guts in Berserk is originally written as "Gatsu" if you translate the symbols phonetically, but in context it's a reference to the circumstances of his birth (being delivered by cesarean after his mother was hanged, almost certainly by accident as the result of someone who was mutilating a corpse). From a localisation perspective, sometimes they just make things up completely but this really looks like a case where they paid attention to the context and made an effort to reflect the intended names, rather than literally romanising them and having the old man who fights with a puppet that serves as a means of addressing his grief at the loss of his loved ones not share his name with the character from Pinocchio whose motivations were similar.

@@casanovafunkenstein5090His name in the JP version is "Urumunafu" so it wouldn't even be a variant of Yuri. It would be something closer to "Irmanoff/Irmanov. The probably localized it to Yuri cause it sounds more like a more viable name for a JRPG protag to western audiences.

I still remember receiving this along with the strategy guide for Christmas the year it released and have never felt such anticipation for a game quite like it since. The overall tone for the game compared to the original was very much welcomed. I can't say implementing that same tone from the original SH to Covenant would have had the same effect with the updated visuals, cinematic scenes, and full voice acted segments. With that said, I haven't played the Shadow Hearts games in well over a decade. Perhaps it's time I revisit them and see how they hold up today... with exception for FtNW. This is an enormous video but I'm not even upset because I fucking adored Covenant. In particular to this day I often cite it as one of the best endings in a video game ever as it still makes me cry whenever I replay the game. Even outside the exceptional ending it's just such a great mix of campy B-movie vibes and silliness that few games ever attempt to match. Very little can compare to the sheer joy of all the nonsense around Joachim, from how he just picks up random large objects to admire before using as weapons to the peak insanity of the Man Festival.

You work continues to be really impressive and insightful. I feel like I've been waiting my whole life to find someone who talks about JRPGs with as much insight, critical thinking, and compassion as you. Thanks for the awesome work and please keep it up! I know that's kind of generic for this video, so I'll say something specific: I had no idea Shadow Hearts was a trilogy started by Hiroki Kikuta. That fact blew my mind. I'm really happy to learn to finally learn more about this series after being recommended, but failing to get around to playing, Shadow Hearts II for years. Now I definitely feel I gotta play it one of these days.

YES DOOD! I'm so glad to see this one! Damn this game has so much style and passion. Even if it's a little wonky. The sequels have such great combat systems too. You can walk into a boss fight and kill the boss in one perfect chain after 2 turns if you know what you're doing. And you get better loot. It's such a cool series. Just so different and interesting to get lost in compared to "another JRPG setting you already know"

One of these days I'm sure you'll cover a game or series I've actually played, but until then I'll continue to watch your excellent retrospectives at least until they reach the heavy spoilers sections. For what it's worth, you've inspired me to add Koudelka, Skies of Arcadia, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, and Tales of Symphonia to my already massive backlog (still not going to play CD-i Zelda lol), but I just haven't had the time for any of them yet. Keep up the great work man. Despite me not being very familiar with the majority of the games you cover, you've still earned your spot as one of my favorite KZfaqrs this past year or so. Your level of writing/analysis/commentary quality is just hard to come by, and I'm grateful to have found you as early as I did.

Thank you so much! Playing a 60 hour game is a tall order when you've got responsibilities. As much as it's always best to get the full experience, I'm happy you can get some semblance of it here!

Thanks a bunch for this review Maj! I gotta say, parts of this plot line confuse me near the center. Chalk it up to too many moving parts I guess, and I think you definitely had the right thought with the Cast not serving a large enough role in the wider scope. It's a darn shame because this cast is a serious punch above the average! Also, as much as I was poised to agree with you in regards to Lucia, on rewatch, I noticed a exquisite PS2 Animated Hipsway on her, so I'm afraid I'll have to reconsider!
@Majuular

Thanks man! I think it's a combination of those moving parts and probably just an inability to synopsize the story in a timely manner. Hopefully it's more cogent for people who have already played Covenant 😬

you really nailed down the beef i have with ffx-2's True Ending - the game's very much about moving on from the old, looking to the future, and letting go. the ability to just get tidus back at the end feels like it really guts out the entire theme of the game badly, in a worse way than the 'yuri dies instead of moving on from alice' ending (on its own) from this game. anyway, superb video series for a franchise i only ever saw in adverts in gaming magazines, great work man

Ironically enough, the novel sequel does try to open the possibility of Tidus dying for real and the would be FFX-3 also adds to this much to the detriment of the games' story.

I love deep retrospectives on games, and yours are my absolute favorites. I first found your channel with your LoD Retrospective. As that's one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, I was hooked on your content and have watched every one of your retrospectives, most of which are games I've played at great length myself... including the CD-i Zeldas when they came out. I know these have been done by others, but I would love to see your in depth take on the Parasite Eve series. Either way, I look forward to whatever comes next!

Just one of my favorite RPG's. I remember reading game informer and seeing the glowing recommendation it got, so I saved up my money, and bought the game one day despite being sick enough to be completely disoriented and ending up at the edge of town before I eventually hobbled my way to the local game shop. Came home, passed out, woke up the next day, and fell in love with the game. Anywho, Lenny, Blanca, and kurando have the same VA, who also happens to be the VA for Kenshin himura in the rurouni kenshin dub.

1:05:30 You know the Golden Bat thing is a ref to an even more insane Japanese superhero character, right? It takes something special to one-up a vampire luchador superhero, but the Golden Bat does it with style.

I love this game, to this day I still can't watch THAT scene without crying, and it seems like every other week I am pulling up the OST to listen to while I play other games. SH is a beautiful series that deserves more recognition, and I dare say a reboot of some sort.
