Hi Daniel! Thank you so much for the review and honestly, I couldn’t have hoped for a better response. Which is that people engaged with my story, that it caused them to think and perhaps even be challenged a little. And that they were entertained as well. I feel you really understood the core concepts of my novel and your feelings towards Daylen are wholly valid. I couldn't help myself, if I was going to write about a once tyrannical emperor I wasn't going to pull any punches. Maybe we can hop in a chat sometime and talk about it, that and fantasy in general ^_^ I’ve really been loving your content mate, you’re going to grow big!

@@doogler9362 Essentially The light is god in the novel. The inner light is the soul. Evil actions you know are evil that you do intentionally blacken your soul the most, evil actions with good intentions blacken your soul less. The intention and result are both taken into account on your soul. So, yes if you truly believed your actions we're good and had good intention that's less bad then purposely doing evil. Your inner light doesn't nessarily reflect gods judgment. If god didn't interfere clearly the mc would be dead as he jumped. It was actually suffering for him to live. You forget that Dayless is also extremely powerful. Yes he should be punished for his crimes but he is also an extremely useful tool. And that's why he is kept alive because he is much more useful alive than dead. Think of many of the nazi scientists who where "pardoned" as long as they worked fo the military. Most of NASA was staffed with ex nazi scientists and many others went to the airforce. Yes, their crimes where not on the level of Dayless but they where still pardoned due to their usefulness

In universe the people believe that the Light (God) is the one that grants powers and if Dayless was granted power then his oath is sincere. "I ask you, which is better? To be born good? Or to overcome your evil through great effort?" - Paarthurnax I actually quite empathized with Dayless. We get a flashback to his old self where he is a great, loving guy. And then, after a hearty slap in the face where he realized how far he fell, he began transforming back to that great guy. I think there's nothing more noble than a man who lost himself to evil returning to a man of righteousness.

I haven't read the story yet, but from what I'm hearing the main character is essentially a man who sought after every pleasure in life and learned to disregard the suffering he caused while he did so. And now he's just trying to amend what he's done as much as possible. Just basing what I know about him off my own morality, I don't think his crimes should be forgiven or forgotten. But he's no longer seeking to commit them and he has the power and the willingness to redeem himself, although he doesn't think redemption is possible. Then why should we say he's "not allowed to live" when he's devoting the remainder of his existence to doing the right thing? Plus, he's a fictional character and all of his atrocities are literally constructed. This little quandary really shouldn't be what stops one from enjoying a fun fantasy book.

Daniel Greene I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the world, magic (of course magic is a selling point for me 😂), and character explorations/interactions where good & the themes are excellently done. There were some issues like occasional info dumps, hard magic verging on the edge of video game mechanics feeling (but once you except this, i think it is one of the best magic systems to read about)
@Grimscribe732
@Grimscribe732 5 жыл бұрын
I ultimately gave it 1-Star on Goodreads since that is the equivalent of 'I did not like it', which is, sadly, true. However, I have to say that it is far from being a bad book, there are just some aspects to it that hindered my enjoyment of its better parts. My main issue was the overuse of info-dumps, paying a bit more heed to the 'show don't tell'-credo would've done wonders for Shadows of the Conquerer. At times it just felt like I was reading a rulebook rather than a novel. I actually like the idea of Daylen and the whole redemption-but-not-really type path he takes. What bothered me with his character was the inconsistency that followed him around throughout the book. I think a professional editor would've worked wonders here. Also, he is a bit of a Mary-Sue and basically makes groundbreaking discoveries in fields he is completely new in on the regular. Some of the side-characters are okay, others are a catastrophe. My biggest bother throughout the book is probably Lyra. A badass-knight turning into a wailing damsel whenever the main character needs to feel sad for a bit. That is literally all there is to her. Emotions are way over-stated. If any character is sad or angry it always is overpowering and crippling to the point where they fall to the ground and are unable to move or something like it. It's just not believable. I really do like Shad and his channel. Maybe because of that my expectations were to high. I recognize he is a new author and the story he is telling is not an easy one to tell. Still, I was fairly disappointed with the book, especially since it has the foundation to be a genuinely good read. I mean, the world and the magic system are pretty awesome, and so are some of the more action-heavy scenes. I guess the silver lining is that I can see areas where Shad already is a good author, there just some kinks in his work that are still a bit too glaring for my taste - however, I will definitely give his future works a try. PS: After listening to Daniel's review, I have to say that I did not have an issue with disliking the main character. I honestly liked following him around for most of the time, simply because he is interesting.

I did get some Kvothe vibes from Daylen, just because he’s extremely competent & knowledgable in so many areas (though it makes sense for Daylen & is earned.) They both can be very bratty & stubborn. But I still think Daylen is Avery unique and interesting character due to his past. SPOILERS The only problem I found was that because Daylen was so powerful, I never really felt worried for him in a fight for the first half of the book. When it came to fight other magic users it got more interesting, but by then we’ve already seen Daylen’s healing to be so powerful that he can regrow limbs ridiculously quickly & SPOLIERS he can die & still heal. When he sacrificed himself to save the city at the end of the book I could only think back to that time he accidentally killed himself by unlocking all of his memories, died, & then we found out that as long as at least one cell in Daylen’s body isn’t dead within several hours after being killed, Daylen can always automatically begin healing himself back to full health. Luckily the driving force of the book was never about the combat & focused on the character’s journey.

I dont see how you can't see Shad's political beliefs all over this book. The Mormon ideals that Shad believes in are littered throughout. For example all pf Dayless' victims who gave birth to his children were all happy and revivered to forgive him explicitly. Meanwhile, you have the childless victims being the traumatised ones, which even then the trauma isn't well written. Personal tastes, I guess, but for me reading this book, it was too much telling and very clearly Shad biting off more than he could chew.

You should read Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks. It has a somewhat comparable theme to it. But in contrary to this book, Use of Weapons is very well written. You don't start with "Here is this dictator who did these things and now he goes for redemption." You will gradually learn more about the character and what baggage he is carrying while he is on his quest for redemption. Until the last chapter, your opinion on him and your feelings towards him may vary quite a lot with the different glimpses into his past and his present over the course of the book. Leaving it ultimately to you whether you see him redeemable.

I think part of what makes the turnaround from evil emperor to hero more believable is that it's pretty clear he was a good person before he came to power and that certain events led to him becoming evil. Also, having him not just immediately turn perfect helps, as does having him believe he isn't redeemable. I totally agree with the criticism of Shad using telling instead of showing too often.

I haven’t read the book, but that seems pretty similar to the character Joshua Graham from the Fallout universe. He was a good man turned evil through a slow path of moral compromises until he was made a monster by the man whom he once revered. After a shocking failure, however, he was set on fire and thrown into the Grand Canyon, miraculously surviving. He survived not because the fire didn’t harm him, but because the fire within was brighter than that around him. And now, he has to make a decision which will determine his future. Is the fire within him one of hatred and retribution, or one of holy enlightenment? Your description of the emperor’s character arc seemed similar to Graham’s in the way that he was good, he turned bad, and now has a moral decision on whether he can repent and atone for his actions, or if he truly is just a monster inside.

If you want a truly detailed redemption story, read the manga Vinland Saga, by Makoto Yukimura. It is an awesome story about Vikings and Thorfinn is a fantastic character. You understand the reasons why he has done what he's done. Seriously, give it a try.

@EmberBright2077
@EmberBright2077 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I thought Thorfinn was endlessly condescending after his "redemption" towards anybody that would dare kill to achieve their goals. His attitude just screams "I'm better than you". Aside from that, if he really cared about helping people, he should be willing to kill in order to do that, rather than letting people die through his inaction then patting himself on the back for it, since he didn't personally swing the sword. That and his ability to do what he does without killing people is entirely owed to his skills gained through killing people, so I always have to laugh whenever he tells people that the warrior's way is wrong, despite it being the only way he ever gets anything done. Lastly, his methods should kill people: punching people into unconsciousness would have a pretty high rate of mortality, especially in mediaeval times. He just gets away with it because the writer needs him to.
@skyanaugustus3513
@skyanaugustus3513 4 жыл бұрын
@@EmberBright2077 I respect your opinions, but I wouldn't say that he's condescending. He just never saw the reason why people enjoyed war so much, even when was travelling with Askeladd. He is still haunted by the bodies that he's left behind while he was blinded by vengeance. He grew up in a peaceful area of Iceland only to plunge headfirst into violence and warfare while using hatred and vengeance as his prime motivator and I think that him wanting to atone for his countless sins by creating a settlement away from warfare while refusing to take another life is fantastic. That's just me though.

Quite surpsied to hear you like it so much. Of course, respect your opinion. I'm halfway through and don't think I'll be able to finish. You said the main characters remorse was handled well. I have to say I thought it was incredibly clumsy. He slaughters and tortures and then has a little cry for half and page and never thinks about that specific deed again. It feels so shallow. The info dumps did bother me... I had alarm bells early on when Daylen is about to throw himself to his death. This should be an emotional and focused scene, but Daylen (or shad) takes half a page to think about how the sun works in the general larger universe and how voyages have tried to locate it, and what theories have cropped up to explain it... In the middle of a suicide scene! Just such a bizarre choice... Then there's the fact that, so far at least Daylen has nothing to do except wonder around. No real purpose besides a vague desire to do good (through killing!), no skills to aquire because he already knows everything and is instantly powerful. No evil to fight as the world is pretty stable. So there's no plot. He just has a mooch. Plus, he figures out every precise detail of how his power works within ten minutes of aquring them. And we find out the key details of his past in the first chapter. So theres no mystery either... So why am I reading thsi again? Even little things kind of bugged me. An example. Characters refer to 'gravity'. Would people in a world where gravity isn't a force that draws you towards bodies of mass, but a universal constant pulling everything in the same direction even conceive of 'gravity' as we do? Do we have a name for whatever law of reality always pulls us forward through time? No, it's such an unquestionable and universal constant as to not need to be named. Characters in this would referring to gravity felt like the author writing without thinking, rather than something that fits into the book. I'm sure some people will say I'm over thinking it, but I think Shad is underthinking these granular quatuons that really give a world heft and weight. Sorry, I didn't mean to rant on like a mad man. I guess this was kind of cathartic, even though no one will ever read it. Love Shad's videos, but this book doesn't work on so many levels. Sad times.

while i agree that the ideas are very interesting and most of the topics in the books are very complex, i kind of feel like the nuance was one step below a sledge hammer our protagonist went from being a hero, to step by step becoming a disgusting monster to trying to redeem himself and being forgiven by some and not by others this is the most anime fantasy book i have read, probably ever. powerlevels are completely insane (the combat is awesome though, especially against threatening opponents) but our boy protag just has a "its ok to kill this person, they are evil or corrupt and there is little to no hope of reforming them" sense which allows him to laugh off and chill a 1v30 versus capable fighters (just because in an anime sense, they are low level mobs to make the protagonist seem cool)

Alot of this video just feels like Daniel trying to not be too mean to (at the time) a big youtuber since of course this was before Shad tanked his credibility and good will in most of these circles. 10:55 given the time it took him to realize who he was dealing with in his last travel between cities in the book, I think he is kinda dense to some matters, like if some beliefs he had for 60+ years are not questioned anymore until directly confronted, for example, the final antagonist shook his view of the world in a manner that should be obvious for many people, specially with his age, but because he never saw something like that happen, he never questioned if it could happen. I felt like his view of the consequences of actions are limited by what he saw happen at least once. He learns quickly, and have quite the creativity to employ combative capabilities and magic, but when it comes to how people think and act he is somewhat limited (probably because everyone around him was always agreen with him for fear of attracting his ire, he never once had to deal with thinking on what other people thought of the things he was doing beyond the obvious)

All of the replies to this feel like they're from people on the verge of becoming the fucking Punisher or something. There is a BIG difference between justice and vengeance. And yes, vengeance is 99% of the time BAD. Justice is an agreed-upon concept shared by the whole of human society (or a subset of it, such as a country or a religion), vengeance is thought up and done entirely by one person (or one people in certain cases). Justice hinges on the morality of the whole of the society which practices it, and is practiced to prevent bad things from happening, while vengeance doesn't rely on any morality and can be made up of virtually anything the individual seeking vengeance considers "justice", and is practiced for a self-righteous reason and the personal feelings of the one practicing it. What is considered 'just' to do changes as the views of the society change, but that's only natural, because the people who decided on what is 'just' in the past were definitely not perfect, and as we see issues with some of the things they considered 'just', we amend the definition to better fit our understanding of what is just. Vengeance doesn't care for the growth of the people performing it, in fact it often prevents those performing it from growing in the first place because it leaves them focused on avenging what has already happened as opposed to thinking about what their actions will lead to in the future. Chill out guys, Earth isn't a grimdark setting.

I feel there is one thing that can be cleared up here a bit more in this video. He is perhaps the one person, or at least one of the most important people to keep alive if they want to stop whatever evil seems to be coming down upon the world soon. He deserves death, and as Daniel said, he would rather him just be killed. But would I make sure not to kill Mao or Stalin who were given a fresh lease on life... When I know they have a high probability of at least giving a huge increase in chances of the entire world not ending for whatever reason? That is a moral question this video should have also put in. Because, yeah, I think I would let them live, and do something similar (without spoiling on what exactly they did). The downside is... None the characters seem to actually understand the danger that is coming, so the in-world response I thought was questionable. But the readers do.

"I don't know how I feel about it, or why"- this is exactly what I thought about it when I first read it.. I read 70% of the book, and thought I was enjoying it, until one day I found I couldn't force myself to read another page. Couldn't figure out why, but now that I've had some time consider, I think a lot of the little things you mentioned made it difficult for me to care about the characters it'shard to build an emotional attachment when you'rebeing told characters emotions and not shown them, I also think they're all a bit flat. Lyrah is very two toned, either she'sa tough warrior or bubbling mess. Dayless is hard to connect to because he has no weaknesses, this could be managed by expanding on his emotional weaknesses, make him backslide, make it feel like there is some chance he will fail to be redeemed, the priest dude(Ahrek) seemed to exist only to be amazed by Dayless abilities, honestly the only character I liked was Ceuseg. As a result, once the world building slowed down, I lost my drive to keep reading. TLDR; Fascinating world, interesting premise, but I couldn't get invested in the characters, so I got bored.
@EmberBright2077

I disagree about Lyrah. I always figured her tough warrior act was just that. She's trying to over compensate for her inner vulnerability, and so she falls apart when she's truly hurt. As for Daylen, I half agree. I think he could have used some nerfing externally, but internally I thought he was way too fragile, like he becomes kind of a pathetic mess whenever he thinks about his past. As for Arhek, I felt that he makes a good moral commentary of Daylen, in that he is always there to be his foil. Especially towards the end I appreciate these two old men reflecting on their respective vengeances in their fight to the death, making Ahrek's forgiveness all the more impactful. Anyway was just scrolling through and thought I'd contribute my opinion.

True also it doesn't even make sense that seeing his kids get murdered pushed him to become a sexual deviant, shouldn't he have like PTSD and be hypersensitive to women and children suffering? becoming a genocidal and filled with murderous rage is understandable but not SA. If I was writing it I'd make it so Daylen sadistically kills his enemies as revenge and then rather then proceeding to violently forced himself on kids I'd make so after he had his revenge he indulged in hedonism and being blinded by grief didn't responsibly heed the position of power he was in and then later when he meets one of his old concubines he finds out that she was not there by choice, wasn't of age, and pretended to "consent" because to her he was just a mad tyrant and she thought if she displeased him she'd be executed like his enemies.

This book is very good, especially for a first try and since I feel I know the author since I have followed his channel for a while (of course I don't, or well, I know the person "on screen" and while I think that is the real Shad he does not know me from Adam so what do I know. :-P ) it is like getting a gift from a friend. A fairly hefty priced gift, a bit of a gamble but in the end well worth it! Daylen/Dayless is a protagonist I love to hate, a hate slightly mitigated by the fact that you are not "there" during the time he is a real barstud. I don't think he has been given the gift of a second youth out of kindness, and I don't think he can do enough good to redeem himself (will whatever he does bring back his victims?), he can only do what he can to make the current world a better place. I forgot to mention this commenting on Shad's channel, and this IS A HEAVY SPOILER FOR LATER IN THE BOOK SO GO READ IT RIGHT NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT, but Daylen's eventual two companions ending up being the guy that engineered his downfall and the victim on one of his more horrendous acts, at least of the ones that survived was actually surprising. Especially the former. Oh, I KNEW there was something special about both, don't get me wrong but still. Being forgiven by one (HOW, WHY?) and at least being tolerated by the other (WTF!?) is more than he deserved. I guess a second book can at least expand on the latter a bit more. A refreshing book with a protagonist that was NOT a goody good guy in the past, working towards an unatainable goal of redemption he does not deserve, maybe? Thanks again Shad, and gread review Daniel. :-)

Even down to Daylen's name, he has a lot in common with Dalinar Kholin. The former bloodthirsty tyrant turned member of magic knight order, the special magic sword that everyone recognizes, etc. I liked the book a lot, I have been a subscriber to Shad for a long time, but I do feel that the book may have been a little TOO inspired by Stormlight. I absolutely loved the concept of an outright villain becoming the protagonist though, it was an interesting twist on the "heroes journey" for me. Very much looking forward to book 2.

I'm a huge fan of Shadiversity. I admire Shad quite a bit, and I identify with him as a fellow Christian, but I just finished his book yesterday and it was one of the worst books I've ever read. I actually do believe anyone can be redeemed, no matter how evil their past, but that wasn't the problem I found with the book. It does have potential, but it needs several more rewrites. I think Daniel Greene was being very tactful with his review for a fellow KZfaqr's book. Bravo! If you want a more direct review I highly recommend reading the 2 star and 3 star reviews from Amazon. I read through them and I felt those reviews were the most straightforward and accurate.

I hope Shad sees this. And as an aspiring writer, I might ask, what problems have you found with his book in particular? Specific problems, general problems, etc.

The way I see it, Daylens' guilt it just as self serving and selfish as the crimes themselves. With time he came to look inwards and see the shit that lay there, but then he continues to wail "THERE'S SHIT IN ME! OH WOE IS ME I'M A SHITTY PERSON INCAPABLE OF REMOVING THE SHIT!" Self serving wallowing continues. I say this, as someone who has struggled with depression and self hatred, only after therapy and years of dealing with myself I came to realise, wallowing in sadness and hating yourself doesn't change shit and is just as selfish as loving yourself narcissistically and jerking yourself off (figuratively) at every opportunity. Daylen is not a good person at the end of the book, he will never be a good person in my opinion. every time he wailed about his guilt, I only felt for his victims more, and him less. Main character aside: The world is alien, exciting, and I just want to dive into it to see more. The magic system is robust and well thought out, not wishy washy like most magic systems in fantasy settings. The cultures in the world are almost as alien as the world itself, and i'd love a fish out of water kind of story set in pretty much any one of them to explore them more. The great evil in the story, the shades, are mysterious and obviously have more to explore, I can't say I like or dislike them, as i've not seen a whole lot of them yet.

Agreed. Every time he’s confronted with his own deplorable nature he absolves himself by feeling “guilty”

Have you read Son of the Black Sword by Larry Correia? If so, I would like to hear your opinion on it.

I've just done a review for this and came to a lot of the same conclusions - the concept of the despot as the main character was really interesting. But overall, the issues with huge amounts of world exposition, the plot not really going anywhere, some issues with violence... its a bit flawed. One of the biggest issues was with the characters being overpowered... the main characters are almost like superman, which really made nothing challenge them and I think probably did more harm than good.

And now to another question :) When you talk about reading books, do you infact read them or listen to audiobooks? :) I love to read, but after I found out about audiobooks, I listen more and more, and read less :( But it's so convenient :) I think i'm about 90 % listen and down to 10% reading books atm.
