The splayed, spiraling branches look more like the Haligtree in the map, which lines up with that being Miquella.

I'm pretty confident it'll be following on from the story so far. There's loads of lore to discover but the past is something you uncover more of as you progress through the game so they'll probably stick with that rather than start time-jumping and spoon feeding the back story.

Well you are forgetting the most important reason why this can be so delayed. Elden Ring, unlike all previous souls games, is open world. So the DLC will have to be open world, not linear. You are dealing with a much bigger DLC than FromSoft has historically released. Which would result in more time being required to do it. This also could be delayed due to Armored Core, which is also something the recent Souls games didn't have to deal with. FromSoft, more specifically Miyazaki, will not release an unfinished game/dlc. I think people really just need to learn patience and quit fussing about it. It will come, it will be finished, and hopefully it will be awesome.

It seems to be the Great tree shortly after it got parasitized by the Elden Beast. The gold flowing from it is the "grace" of the Elden Ring mutating it into the Erdtree. I think the DLC tells how Marika became Radagon
