Visual artist Theo Rooden (The Netherlands, 1969) is a weaver. He loves to experiment with techniques and geometric abstract compositions. In many of his works he challenges the flatness of the fabric with optical effects. With his self-imposed rules he searches for interesting rhythms and patterns. Possibilities and constraints of the loom and yarn are a source of inspiration. Rooden prefers to make series of works to explore in detail the consequences of algorithms and its variants. When translating a design into a woven fabric, the self-imposed rules needs to be bent opening a space for unexpected and interesting results. Intuition regarding colours and composition shape final choices.
Some characteristics:
- a monk in his studio, producing the works with repetitive movements
- works with a twist, tricking the eye, balance between simplicity and complexity
- man with a plan, collections with themes
- newby to textile and yarn
- now also working with a damask loom
- heroes: Jan Schoonhoven, Bridget Riley, Ernst Haeckel

So intriguing. You always ask the questions I would ask; then surprise me with ones I’d never have thought to ask. I look forward to finding more of Theo Rooden’s work. Thank you for interviewing him.

So fascinating! Do you prefer a certain yarn weight to weave with? Is a high twist better for weaving? I took my husband to a wool festival hoping he would be interested in dying yarn and he asked more questions to a weaver than a yarn dyer. I’m hoping he will finally start weaving to see if he does like it.
