Worlds Biggest Moths by Bart Coppens - Giant Atlas Moths in captivity! I was stuck with them because of the pandemic! I was supposed to bring the cocoons to butterfly houses (it's my job) but they are closed due to coronavirus.
So now I'm sitting here while they are hatching.
There are 900 more cocoons Attacus atlas, Attacus lorquinii

Please; HELP me! KZfaq is not supporting my channel! It is completely and permanently demonetised! Unlike other 'normal' KZfaqrs, I do not make any money at all with my videos. Instead, my KZfaq channel entirely runs on the donations made by my fans and viewers. It is only thanks to your support that I can improve the quality and size of this channel. Without it, I would have to stop making so much content. Please consider supporting me on Patreon; a subscription-based crowdfunding platform. Find my Patreon here in this link: / bartbutterflies
It is also possible to send me a single payment through PayPal. Find the link to pay me here: paypal.me/BartCoppens
Every single dollar helps; I will use all these funds exclusively to upgrade my camera's, pay for my bus tickets to film butterflies, obtain cocoons of species you like to see, and afford the free time and hard work I put in this channel for free.
Patreon members also gain small benefits such as voting in polls that will decide what content I make next.
It is also possible to send me a donation via the great platform "Liberapay" that works with VISA, Credit card and bank! Visit the link to my Liberapay page here: liberapay.com/BartCoppens/ I'm very grateful for any donations via Liberapay, Patreon and Paypal, it is only because of them that I can keep making moth videos, books and websites.
All the funds I can raise online help me fund my educational website, my moth research, conservation programs, this KZfaq channel(!) and my various online media.
I don't like to call myself a "KZfaqr" because I have many other websites, blogs and platforms. Please take a look below.
My website about breeding butterflies and moths: breedingbutterflies.com/
"Breedingbutterflies" is my succesful blog that has guides and caresheets for moth breeders.
Want to buy moth pupae and cocoons? I can help. I am partnered with a company that sells butterflies and moths internationally. Find our website here: butterflypupaesupplies.com/ - it is also possible to email bart@butterflypupaesupplies.com and ask me how I can help you.
Join the Moth Club and automatically recieve cocoons of great species! Want to recieve cocoons from the best species from me personally? I also have an exclusive membership program for butterfly farms (and serious breeders only). You can buy a subscription on this website: / mothclub
If you subscribe, choose the membership level you would like, and provide your adress via Patreon.

SUPPORT THE MOTH LORD edit: since you are likely to be up to your knees in dead moths by the time quarantine lifts, have you considered selling some of the ones that have passed away on Etsy? There is high demand from taxidermists, collectors and artists for preserved insects, and knowing the moths died peacefully of natural causes will be a selling point for a lot of people.

Thank you for showing us the pupae that was emerging - so exciting. Btw, I like "emerge" better than "hatch" which I use for eggs. I also noticed that you corrected yourself from pupae to cocoon and I know that a lot of laypeople say cocoon for everything (and even children's books), but they are incorrect. Also, I can't wrap my head around your channel being demonetized. Could you explain why? Best wishes.
@bugjams
@bugjams 4 жыл бұрын
I'm curious, where do people use 'cocoon' incorrectly? A quick google search of the definition of cocoon says it's any silky casing an insect makes when undergoing metamorphosis. And any bug that's in a cocoon is technically in it's pupal stage.
@SquidandCatAdventures
@SquidandCatAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
@@bugjams Because no butterflies have that silky casing but a lot of people think that (even The Very Hungry Caterpillar children's book). And not even all moths have cocoons. For those that don't, they still have a pupal case (the hard exoskeleton of the pupa stage), but no soft covering/cocoon. In the video, he was handling the pupal case of the moth. :)
@SquidandCatAdventures
@SquidandCatAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
or you can just say he was handling the pupa of the moth. At the point in the video that I noticed. In other parts, he does handle the cocoons. The biggest misconception though, I think, is that butterflies have a cocoon, and they don't. They have the pupa (that whole thing) but no cocoon covering around their pupae. Hope that made sense. If there's an exception to the butterflies, I'd love to hear it. There seems to always be an exception. :)

@@bugjams , Short version of Squish's explanation: All caterpillars (moth and butterfly) become a pupa. The shell surrounding their changing bodies (at 4:53 ). But SOME caterpillars (many moths, no butterflies that I or Squish know of) first surround themselves with a cocoon, which they weave out of webs that come out of their mouths (that's where we get silk from; silkworm cocoon material). The cocoon is the case that contained the pupa at 4:23. He cut open the cocoon, to show us the pupa. At 8:05, he was swishing his hand around in empty cocoons that he already removed the pupae from. :)

I don't know what it's about moths but they're so calming to look at and just to chill around. When I was little I was homeless and lived in a shelter, and I remembered being excited everyday just to go outside and see the resting moths, and I remember seeing a pink and yellow one that was resting up, and just watching it and examining it is so calming.♥️😃

Oh wow, these big boys remind me of that one time when I found an egg-heavy polythemus moth with my dad. It was a super windy day so she couldn't fly very well (in fact, she was taking refuge in the neighbor's garage) so we took her in. She laid about 70 or so eggs before dying right next to them (he would later preserve her and pin her in her own frame). My dad and i wanted to raise them after I saw they weren't doing so hot in our region, so we spent days scouring libraries and the internet (even calling some colleges) to figure out how to raise them. After a few days the eggs hatched and for months we watched as these 60 half-centimeter worms turn into giant circus peanuts! It was hard finding room for them but we had enough tanks and repurposed cages to keep them happy and healthy. About 10 eggs never hatched, 12 didnt survive the larva stage and 3 never left the pupa stage but the rest hatched from their cocoons and we ended up releasing all of them out into our backyard. The only downside to this was one time, when I was releasing a few into our mature maples, one flew away from the rest and a lady with her dog screamed. She thought it was a bat coming at het lol. I think I got yelled at. I wish I could do this more as an adult but unfortunately I just don't have the time, right education (I don't think geologists know much about bugs lol), or resources to keep it up. I did have a couple of small adventures with other insect species but this one was my favorite. I hope you keep doing what you do and that at least some of those moths have a good time before they kick the bucket lol. Stay safe and stay healthy!

And also, these moths are also the escorts for those people who are closer to die. I remember, one day before my grandma's death. There a moth landed at the door. Then the next day, the moth die, that time, my granny was dead peacefully in her bed.

I'm from the Philippines and we have a superstition (at least here in my small province in Luzon) that everytime we spotted that kind of giant moth it was actually one of our dead relatives visiting us/or looking after us lmao. that is why we don't harm or chase them away. We just let them hang out inside our house lol.

I just subscribed! I really enjoyed your video. I wish we had the Atlast moth in the United States! last year was my first year raising Cecropia and Polyphemus caterpillars. My first Cecropia moth emerged 5 days ago. I am worried she emerged a couple weeks to soon. She has been calling for a male but no luck yet. I think I have 7 Cecropia cocoons and 4 Polyphemus cocoons left to eclose. Plus Monarch season (and other butterflies) is almost here for me in Michigan! Thank you also for explaining the reason you have so many at the moment. I love that you don't hoard them and you take such good care of them. I just wish they all lived more then 2 weeks. I will miss my girl when she passes away :( I do have one video that I did on my channel of all the monarchs I have raised. It's a slideshow with music. Feel free to check it out if you want! I find the entire process of butterflies and moths amazing and not one part of it ever gets old! Take care! I look forward to watching more of your videos!
