I just started a new game+ replay of the shadowbringers story, and I had to cover the screen when this cutscene started. It doesn't get any easier to watch the second time through x(

I watched this video before I got the game and forgot this scene was in base ShB, I assumed it was a patch. I chose to do Alisaie’s route first. The amount of pure dread I felt when that cutscene started and I saw the sin eater, it was horrible.

I played Alphys first and I think definitely preferred it that way. Fun how that works :P You do get a taste of the danger, when you find the traveler you met when you came into the First was eaten, but it still has yet to really manifest. And so you adventure with Alphinaud, aware of the danger but the weight of it has yet to hit you. Then you get to Alisaie, and suddenly you realize just how terrible these creatures are and how you've simply been parading around up until that point. The game only builds up and takes off from there.

Especially in Australia. Until the Stormblood expansion was given a higher rating than Heavensward and ARR.

ARR is 13+, HW-ShB are 16+. It's not meant to be for children. That said, parents know their own kids best, and if they think their child can handle such stuff, that is their decision to make.

@@sleepysera Reminder that the very first dungeon of ARR features literally dozens of sex slaves and the game isn't shy of mentioning that.

@@phodon129 It's not like you see them in action, and that's the important part. 13 year olds don't have to be protected from every bad thought process coming their way, they are already in their teens. It's fine to confront them with themes like war, prostitution, slavery, excessive violence, rape and so on. But keep it PG in the display, only mention or allude to it, don't actually show these things happening, because 13 is still a young, impressionable mind. Also, I wouldn't say that the game isn't shy of mentioning that. It's actually very easily missable, not a quest objective, rescuing them is an optional task tucked away into a little back room that almost all players skip, and the quest isn't *about* that. Similarly, at Costa del Sol, you have skimpy dancers and even escort one to her "job" at night. It's pretty fucking obvious what it is, but when you reach the destination it's not like you see a guy slapping her ass and dragging her inside. Violence is treated the same way - you rarely actually see it happening, usually the camera cuts away and you just hear a scream and the aftermath (NPCs kneeling or lying on the ground wounded or dead). If you do see something, it's from far away and there is no blood. Even for key scenes like Teledji getting cut in half, you don't actually SEE it happening - once again, it is only implied. With Raubahn's severed arm, the same thing happens - you don't see the violence, only the severed arm afterwards (and of course completely blood-free). I'd say the closest we got to outright nightmare fuel in ARR was Tam-Tara Deepcroft HM, but once again, to actually understand the implications of the whole fucked up thing you need to have paid close attention to hidden away clues throughout your journey, otherwise she's just a weird girl who wants to marry a flying head monster. So no, I wouldn't say that ARR is ever blatant about any questionable themes. Of course, that falls apart with HW and onwards, since they didn't have to be afraid anymore to show blood, violence actually happening and just generally being a lot more open about the fucked up shit going on in this world, and Shadowbringers basically revels in that 😏 Anyway, sorry for this way too long reply 😅 TL;DR what I'm saying is - yes, none of FFXIV was ever meant for little children, but they did a pretty good job keeping more mature themes and visuals under wraps for a young teen audience originally :)
