I love how it poetically and grotesquely narrates your death, then the same narrator reminds you that you're playing a video game: "YOU HAVE FOUND A HIDDEN DEATH."

I have to admit, hidden death 3 bugs me a little. In the original, you had to put the scepter and the ring on the king's corpse to progress. In this version, doing that kills you.

The demon behind the door is a reference to the fact that in the original game, there was a door that you could never open near the end... well, just as well, in this case, eh?

Hidden Death #2 solved a decades old mystery. What was behind that unopenable door in the well room in the original game.

I cannot find this *exact* rendition of the death theme on the OST. There are two versions and neither one has the same tempo and deepness of the strings as the version that plays in the hidden deaths. It's driving me crazy because the hidden death theme's version is also my favorite rendition.

Two other hidden deaths I think the could have made if they had the time: 1) One for the room where you find the water elemental where they had the slide featured in the original version of that room. Somehow (maybe by a spell or using an item like that rod you get elsewhere) you unblock the slide. You then use the Go action to use it where the text reads "Giddy like a schoolchild, you place yourself on the slide, expecting a fun ride. You definitely take a ride, but what happens next is far from fun..." Then it cuts to a scene of Jaer falling off the end of the slide while the narrator says "Devoid of caution, you place yourself buttocks-first on the metal slide with a cheer or excitement. What you don't know until it's too late is that the slide was a trap meant to send hapless invaders to their doom. Your cheering soon gives way to a scream of terror as you are launched flying into a massive pit full of sharp steel spikes! As your body is impaled in your chest, stomach, spine and other organs, you question your rashness as your lifeblood swiftly leaves you. You have found a Hidden Death (Slipping Sliding Away). 'Tis a sad thing that your adventures have ended here!" 2) One for the catacombs room. In this case, you (somehow) have to open one of the sarcophagi, which unleashes a massive slime. The text could read "With some effort, you manage to open the sarcophagus. At first, you notice nothing, until an acrid odor assails your nose as a hideous pile of green slime rolls out of the tomb onto you!" The narrator is "Your screams of agony are for naught, in part due to the foulest of odors from the acidic slime making it difficult to breathe without retching, and otherwise in part due to the paralytic nature of the alchemically-created being! Your armor hisses in protest against the powerful acid that comprises this gelatinous beast, but soon dissolves, as does your flesh in short order! You have found a hidden death (He's Been Slimed!)." 'Tis a sad thing your adventures have ended here!"

I remember playing the original when I was 8. I could never figure it out all the way. And when the torches got low I'd start to panic. - cg

Talk about grim. The cries and screams from the cut scenes had set loose swarms of butterflies.

The mirror/outer space death was pretty underwhelming. After playing the original versions, I had hoped that this version would have really expanded on that one and shown outer space and not just nothingness.

You know what would make this game a lot more sinister? Every time you die (hidden or not), you suddenly hear a loud, evil, maniacal laugh similar to the one in Return to Zork that Morpheus makes every time you die, and then screen goes black! Who said the evil Warlock Lord couldn't cackle maniacally at your demise? **Gets An Idea in head** Maybe I should do some video editing... muwhahahaha! :)
