I often forget how hard the parabatai oath hits me. The author took it from the bible (Old testament) and it's an edited version of the oath between David and Jonathan. And yes, women can also have a parabatai, and the gender combination really doesn't matter. Also it's more common to not have a parabatai than to have one. ugh this episode gave me all the feels I totally understand your reaction and it makes me like your reactions even more! introduction of maia!! she seems very headstrong and loyal to her pack of course i love that clary was here for simon with what’s going on with his mom their friendship is so sweet also “come out of the coffin” was so funny, I get why raphael is being so annoying but still like leave simon alone lol poor magnus trying everything to save alec but not being able to do anything, him being upset trying to bring him back broke my heart the jace and alec flashbacks got me🥺, they really mean a lot to each other I think jace was the first person (other than izzy of course) that alec really connected with and cared about this ep also showed how much jace cares and loves alec they are brothers and he was willing to die as long as he could get to alec and save him, that line gets me every time the ending scene also gets me every time, everyones acting in that scene was so good, clary was tearing up and magnus’s & izzys face of relief when alec came back, just so good

this episode oh my god. it had me in TEARS by the end. the whole time all i was thinking was "no way there were gonna kill alec off" but great reaction !! i'm especially excited to see tomorrow's episode

The scene when Jace was hugging an unconscious Alec, Jace said "Please don't leave me, Alec". That line was not in the script and was made up on the spot by Dominic (Jace). I am so glad that the staff decided to not cut that out

OOF this episode is SO. GOOD. The flashbacks, Clary and Simon, Maia's introduction, Magnus trying to heal Alec 😭, Izzy trying to do everything at once xd, and of course the ending scene. Once saw the bible verses the parabatai oath is based on and was like "SHADOWHUNTERS?? Wait. I should've realized that." lol xD. Anyway, love your reaction!! Made me feel the feels extra again :').

This episode had me sobbing the first time I watched it. It really pulls on your heartstrings. But in good news, you get to meet the iconic book character Maia. So, yay. BUT, as promised- here are a bunch of fun facts on parabatai! Yes, women can have parabatai, Isabelle just doesn't have one. The first pair of parabatai were Jonathan Shadowhunter (the first shadowhunter) and his best friend David the Silent (he would become the first ever silent brother, which would actually break the parabatai bond). The word Parabatai comes from the Greek soldiers that would fight together, as demonstrated in the Iliad, when Dionysius mentions that apobatai (the sidemen in chariots) were important in certain fighting styles. To become parabatai, people have to go through the trail of water, and the trail of fire. The trial of water is optional, and more of a compatibility test, while the trial of fire is required. The trial will consist of the two parabatai, the silent brothers to conduct the trial, and two witnesses (usually these are two parabatai who are close to the people going through the trial). A ring of fire will appear around the two, and they will link their hands and recite the oath. The oath is a verse from the bible which goes: Entreat me not to leave thee, Or return from following after thee- For whither thou goest, I will go, And where thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried. The Angel do so to me, and more also, If aught but death part thee and me. This, of course you heard in the episode. Not every shadowhunter has a parabatai. Actually most don’t. But there are many benefits to having one, including the fact that runes given by your parabatai are much stronger than others. Parabatais in the books include Jace and Alec, Will Herondale and James Carstairs (who I’ve mentioned like a thousand times at this point), James Herondale and Matthew Fairchild, Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn, Cordelia Carstairs and Lucie Herondale, and more! Final fun fact- siblings can be parabatai! It’s rare but it happens. There were two twins, Livvy and Ty Blackthorn- who had actually considered becoming parabatai, but something happened to prevent that.
