I know I could tell he wanted to CRY 😢😭 when ALEC broke his HEART Magnus's goodbye seemed permanent like if you go thought with this you'll never see me again kind of GOODBYE and the look Alec had as Magnus walked away was like I"M AN IDIOT but does Alec go after him NO of course NOT he just stands there and lets his HAPPINESS slip through his fingers

my favorite bits: 1:07 Magnus caught himself smiling fondly at Alec so he cleared his throat and looked down 1:30 Alec being his confused innocent self 1:36 Magnus being okay with their relationship being hidden from the Lightwoods and everyone just so he could be with Alec 1:52 Ughhh you just can hear Magnus's heart breaking I swear 2:00 Alec's voice breaking 2:21 "not that I would know" ouch :'((((

The guy who plays Magnus does a really good job. He has to play a dramatic guy getting hurt but not showing any real emotion, while at the same time trying to que the audience in to what he's really feeling, but also trying to seem aloof and unbothered. Its a hard gig, but I think (from what I see in the comments) he does it well.

Yes, Harry Shum Jr really is a fantastic actor. He’s really good at showing his emotions even without words and he’s also good at making us believe the magical parts as well.

I know right! Sure he had girlfriends and boyfriends, but he never married any of them. None of those relationships ever got to serious. I think Magnus thought that Alec could’ve been different for him.

You know what hurts the most here?? Magnus KNEW that he was talking about his marriage to a WOMAN before he even clarified that it is with Lydia. After all, just a few minutes ago Izzy told him that their mother was looking for a bride for Alec. But Magnus still played the flirty coy act of his even though he felt that sharp hurt and disappointment. It almost feels like he was desperate for Alec to joke with him and say “no I’m not getting married”. And Harry is such an amazing actor that you can see the hope in his eyes the first few seconds when they’re talking and then that pain after Alec says that he’s getting married.

Alec really doesn’t have to explain himself, after all Magnus could be counted as “someone he knows” let alone further than an acquaintance, but he try to make Magnus understand the partnership as if he knows it would hurt Magnus, it’s cute how he stumbled through that.

"Marriage is a wonderful _institution"_ That's a very specific choice of words but it got me thinking... institution, Institute, sounds similar, yes? Magnus definitely know that Alec's engagement is all for the Institute and his family's reputation and he's trying to tell Alec that he knows what this wedding is really about.

i notice that after this exchange alec goes to talk to lydia and his feelings waver there. he starts questioning because of the conflict in his head and heart about the situation and magnus. its almost as if magnus saying what he said planted the conflict and created the push alec needed.
