This one affected Craig badly. Reminds us that although time allows existence, it's at the same time one mean son of a bitch.

Craig really bears his soul there at the end of the second interview when he talks about running. He clearly sees a kindred spirit and is smitten with her, but because of the age difference and inappropriateness of it, plays it off as fatherly concern. For a girl of her age and generation, she is so smart, articulate, and an amazing personality, it's hard not to smitten with her.

I think he really does. Usually he's flirting up a storm every single interview, but he was so reserved. I honestly think he was a little shy, I don't think that he was very... confident, even. He reminded me so much of one of my friends who does the exact same thing because of his personality, but is super reserved around certain people.

Craig sensed her innocence and youth and as sympatico as they are, instinctively dropped into a protective mentor role, rather than being his usual flirtatious self. Those sorts of instincts are part of what made him amazing. I miss this show...

Two things about this guest. 1) he never flirted. No creepy "it puts the lotion in the basket". Nothing. Pretty cool. 2) everything he said in the second interview about pure artists losing themselves and being non-snooty is exactly how he was being. One of the purest interviews he's done.

That "it goes downhill" retort was pure genius...and got almost no response. My god, the man is untouchable by today's standards. Seriously. He most definitely feels a very clear connection with her in these interviews, too...he lets his guard down a few times and stops worrying about being funny. What an excellent human being Craig is.

I love this interview. Craig respects her as an intellectual equal, and at the end of their second interview he truly shares something personal with her. I think maybe he senses the peril she is in by her tightrope walk with success and wishes her to avoid the same evils that he went through. Shailene is a lovely, amazingly perceptive human.

She officially entered one of the best guests ever territory when she pulled out the matching smoking pipe. Also, hearing Craig talk about running was really interesting. As a fellow runner myself, I really agree with him about the running as a search for grace and just exhausting your body to the breaking point. It doesn't feel great at first, in fact as he says it is really painful... actual pain during the hard parts, but then you endure it and your body recovers and like she said, you feel as if you have really accomplished something.
@eaunan
@eaunan 5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Mason -- Absolutely!! The pipe was brilliant, intelligent, playful, and p.e.r.f.e.c.t. Her timing (waiting for Craig to go first) and then not overplaying it...she came prepared and it was a beautiful thing to witness...Craig was genuinely surprised, too (imho). I want to also agree with you about the "best guests ever territory" -- these two interviews are so unique and so heartfelt (I've watched MANY @TheJaylenoFly videos) NOT ONE other video is like it! And there are other videos on this channel that are unique, too (Desmond Tutu, Michael Caine, more) but NONE that are so sincere in conversation and comments. As I watched this video, I knew in real time that I was watching something completely different than ever before in a guest's interview(s) and I really liked it. And I wouldn't hesitate to place this at video #1 - Craig is SO transparent, SO open / honest, and SO caring it shows a side of him he never let guests really see on his show, but did it so naturally with Shailene Woodley that a casual watcher may have even missed it. Craig may be in the flirting master class, but he let his audience see his heart unzipped in these interviews...and Shailene brought it out. Thank you @TheJaylenoFly for posting this and all your efforts in this channel. They are very much appreciated.

@Stephen Mason: the pipe was a truly clever and entertaining move on her part. So these two interviews didn’t go down well with...the viewers? He was respectful and a gentleman as far as his behaviour went. I guess that a lot of his viewers like to watch for the eye-candy and were disappointed that these two appearances failed to result in the heavy flirting that’s often playfully gone on during Craig's shows & even then...well they’re adults on late night TV. I certainly miss watching this show. Thanks very much for sharing your comment.

THIS is Craig being genuinely intersted in somone. With other actresses and actors,he only genuinely lets them get about halfway through a story or thought before he has derailed with some dirty joke. While this is hella funny, I think that is Craig showing that he is bored with the conversation, so he is trying to get a kick out of their reaction. This is not universal with every dirty joke or every other guest, but it does seem to be a trend. With Shailene however, they finish their thoughts, and build on eachothers perspectives, like two people who really understand eachother will do. He is truly interested, (as he reiterates many times), and wants to understand her better. The only other guest I can think of whom he showed a similar conversation style with is Morgan Freeman.

In many of them he seems to need something from them...to impress them, to captivate them, to win them over, to master them...these two interviews are different. Craig could see that the 'sharks' of Hollywood hadn't had a chance to get at, or manipulate her to suit their money grabbing ways, and he really genuinely seemed to be trying to help her from becoming just another 'Young Thing' to be thrown away when she stopped making money for them. In fact I think I can say he was a totally different person in those two interviews with her from all the others I have ever seen him do in all his long time doing that show. It was almost as if he was being like a 'show-business father figure' and trying to protect her from all the 'pitfalls' that he knew only too well could happen to someone like her in their line of work.

When you have seen as much of life in the 'show biz' world as Craig has and what it can do to you, - and I think he has tried and done most things from what he says in his shows. Luckily for him he managed to 'pull' himself back from the edge just in time, - mind you it cost him several marriages in the process. Maybe he saw the 'red light' just in time - who knows ? - I think in this 'girl' (who isn't stupid by any means) he can see someone who is not in the usual 'Hollywood Mould' and it intrigues him to actually find someone who comes over as being a lot older than her years. It would be interesting to know if they have kept in touch after Craig's time on this show finished.

thats because she didn't come out in a tight revealing dress that many of the women "celebrities" wear on the show, so if they don't look like a bimbo, he doesn't treat them as one. Craig almost bares his soul at 27:02 and 28:47 is one of the rare moments in this show. He must saw something in this young lady to respond like that. Fascinating interviews.

She is pretty amazing - such a sexy voice and legs like a gazelle and a curious mind. She really got to Craig and her youth brought out a fatherly protective streak in him. The "satanic manipulators" part was pretty shocking and honest to hear from a talk show host. They usually joke about how sick Hollywood is. Major respect to him for that. Craig was truly fond of her, and it's easy to see why.

If you really notice, Craig always welcome young new talents in studio as if they're big stars. Even if they were coming to promote indie movies etc., Craig made them exciting. Which is important because those little-known projects were sometimes personal to the guests. That's the heart of his Late Show.

The phrase "normal" is really one that is not easy to define for a person. But for this young actress, it seems very appropriate to call her seemingly "normal". In the world of Hollywood, she is so humble, well spoken, intelligent, at ease, and a delight. And I am an old guy. I appreciate that kind of young person whether they are in the entertainment industry or not.

If the show had gone on longer I think she would have been one of the guests that had tons of appearances on the show. I think these might have been two of the most genuine talk show appearances I've ever seen. Craig didn't even try to make some innuendo when she mentioned she needs meat. And I don't even think he held back from making it, I kind of think it just didn't even occur to him for once. I mean they joked around with each other, but the whole thing really just felt like a natural good conversation between two people. Very cool.

I think Kurt Russell is correct. It's often not a fear of flying, but a Loss of Control issue. I was taken up to fly in an open-cockpit Stearman biplane and the US Marine (F-4 Phantom fighter) pilot did rolls, loops, stalls, and even drifted the plane sideways when landing on the grass runway; but the next week we went to family day at an amusement park and he wouldn't go on the roller coaster.
