SHAKA SENGHOR: A COMPLEX HERO
Best-selling author, recognized speaker and criminal justice activist, Shaka Senghor, brings his full presence to a deeply moving conversation about gun violence, fatherhood, breaking cycles, and healing. Formerly incarcerated, Shaka shares with us how journaling in solitary confinement allowed him to process his pain and gain access to his emotions and his humanity. With gentle power and a strong sense of purpose, Shaka reminds us that we can disrupt who the world tells us we should be and create our own narrative to become who we really are.

Thank you so much for this conversation. But especially, Jamey Heath, thank you for so beautifully and passionately articulating your feelings about solitary confinement at the end of the episode. I started crying so hard but it was super dangerous because I was on the highway! Anyway, thank you.

Dear Shaka. What a lovely, kind, deep, loving man. I keep having a picture him and his family sitting by my wood stove and visiting with some good food. I watched his TED talk. Hearing about his response to his son's letter was just beautiful. So much to say!

This was such a great conversation and I love how he didn’t try to make excuses for what he did but show others why he did it and let them make their own judgement on him with all the facts present which of course is that he’s an amazing man but more importantly he’s an example of a man who didn’t stop trying to become the man he always needed in his life and the man he knew he could be. He sets an incredible example for other fathers or just people in general that even though it seems your life has come to a metaphorical end like being incarcerated that you can make that where your new life begins thank you so much shaka and Jamie, Liz, and Justin. Also I’d love to see Emmanuel acho on this I know it’s a big one but also if he manifested oprah we can manifest Emmanuel!

What a conversation. Besides all the Trauma Shaka experienced in his life.I love the Calmness in his voice all the time. It stayed on an even tone he never once spoke loudly. May God continue to Bless him and Hopefully his experiences will help millions of Boys and Girls to not stay in the circumstances that will lead them to prison before they turn their lives around.Bless you Jamey, Liz and Justin. Also Jamey for starting off this Podcast by making it clear that Manenough does not condone violence but rather focus on the changes your guests who were incarcerated made in their lives to be set free from all the trauma they experienced.🙏🙏✨✨

I want to respond but I am afraid I don’t have the adequate vocabulary to address this lovingly and not sound mean. That is not my intention. I am an elderly white lady and have spent the past 2 years trying to educate myself from my sickbed. I hear what you are trying to say but can you also expand your thinking to include the truths -the systemic anti-blackness REASONS that WAY too many young folks are even having to grow up in the conditions of “not being valued” in the first place - I’m sorry. I can’t figure out a sweet and positive way to say what I’m feeling. Let me go think on this some more

It’s when you say you hope his experiences will help children “not stay in the circumstances that will lead them to prison” They are children! It’s not the children that are the problem. And it’s not millions of children making bad choices that is the problem either. And I apologize that I just don’t have the vocabulary to explain what feels like the “problem” maybe a better way to say it would be that I hope Shaka’s story will inspire enough adults to then for changing those circumstances for the children so that this vast number of children simply do not find themselves even in the position of HAVING to worry about having to “turn their lives around” Look for the root cause -change that.

Interesting that you felt a need to apologize for/justify having guests on the show who were incarcerated. But you're right, humanity can be found in every one of us; we dismiss someone's value at our own collective peril. What a great conversation! Same with every episode I've seen so far. And it makes me so proud to see Shaka on the stage with all the other amazing guests in this lineup. Thanks to you all for doing the work that you're doing.

Are you serious? That would be SO awesome! I hope you are young enough that if you start digging in to work on being a change maker now that you will be able to look back on your life and efforts to change the “prison industrial complex” on your deathbed and rejoice in knowing that you were a part of dismantling the whole thing in a single generation. And that how people treat each other at the end of your life compared to what you see now -I hope the difference is too vast to put into words.

Thank you so much for not only this but for all the episodes of Man Enough. It's just amazing to learn from everyone in this podcast. In fact, you are inspiring me to do the same in my country but stand up for all women that have been oppressed by men and the masculinity in our society. Not because they want but just because they have been forced to behave in such a way that makes men feel miserable at one point in their lives. I am also a Baha'í and I appreciate so much any chance you have to pour Bahá'u'lláh's wisdom and help people meditate on His writings. Thanks to Justing, Jamey and Liz for the wonderful work you are consecrated in doing. Blessings.

Wuoh, what a episode! When i was hearing the life of shaka i was feeling a lot of emotions: sadness, anger, hope... I dont know, it was a raw episode. Im so sorry for people that experience this hard things, im so lucky of the life that i have, my traumas are shit in comparison with a lot of people. I hope that in my life i can put my little piece of sand to help to improve the world in some strange way, i will try harder, i have a lot to learn. Thank you for sharing this conversation, it was amazing, probably i will rewatch it. Thank you shaka for sharing your story, for teach me new things and give me perspective for my life. Thank you all the man enough time for making this amazing show, i really appreciate your work, passion and dedication. PD: as im hard of hearing/deaf person, i rely on captions, and for seeing this episode i used the automatic captions of youtube. Your audio quality i think it has to be really good, because i know for my experience that, sometimes, the automatic captions mess up a lot of things, but reading them in this episode, i think i understand all the podcast (i hope hehe). The automatic captions have some funny errors like when justin says "this is man enough", the captions says: "this is mad enough". I just laugh a lot with this... This is MAD enough, its a good title for other podcast hahahahaha. Lots love! :)
