Stories with a good ending used to be called comedy back then. I think people associated the word comedy with humor when seeing the unlikeliness of a good ending, as people thought miracles were needed for good endings. Probably they thought good endings could only be achieved with a deus-ex-machina and the idea itself of a sudden spontaneous solutions to all problems was to be laughed at.
