Short Film “Shakespeare in Tokyo”; showcasing Tokyo’s hidden charms, written and directed by Genevieve Clay-Smith a rising Australian female filmmaker, funded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is now on You Tube!
"A truly wonderful film. I could have spent hours in this world."
-Luke Buckmaster, The Guardian Australia
20 minutes in length, “Shakespeare in Tokyo” follows Ben, an artist with Down Syndrome who seeks to help people see all the beauty of Tokyo in a unique way. Ben comes along on his brother’s business trip to Tokyo. Giving up on his busy brother, he starts exploring Tokyo by himself. With his knowledge of Shakespeare, improvisational illustration skills and talented humor, he catches people’s hearts.

Mr Shinichi Chiba, the actor who played the calligraphy teacher, died a few weeks ago of Corona. He was 82 years old. He was a wonderful actor. Rest in peace.

I'm so happy that this was the ad that interrupted my video! This film is beautiful, it's so touching and heart warming. Really, great job to everybody involved in this film! Loved it and have already started sharing it with my friends. Thank you so much for such an amazing film. It managed to captivate me within the first few seconds, which was enough time for me to be able to forget about the skip button and watch the whole thing. Thank you thank you thank you.

My girls and I just finished watching this and Gerard you have inspired me to make sure I get to Tokyo again next year as planned.... You taught me so much in this movie. You taught me I can do it all on my own and I wished I had walked away from Shinjuku one morning when I had the chance.

When he sat down across the girl in the cafe, I felt second-hand embarrassment. He was being "weird" and I wanted to say "No! Stop that!" And then I saw him brighten her world a little. It left me speechless for a while, and overwhelmingly grateful. I'm grateful for people who are different from me because, without them, I would forget some of the beauty that this world has to offer. This is beautiful. I love the visuals, the music and just the way it views people of all kinds. There is deep empathy and deep kindness in the director's gaze and each person is not a stranger, but a precious human being with a story beyond layers of social norms and bitterness. This is what art should be: changing the way you see the world and other people, even just a little. It reminds me, as a Christian, what it means that people are made in the image of God. They are precious beyond measure, even when the world passes them by.

As long as foreign visitors (particularly men) don't get the wrong idea that Japanese people (particularly women) are generally OK with one being so "familiar" as depicted here - they are not, especially in Tokyo, where personal space is at a premium. But the people are generally polite, and can be quite helpful on their own terms. Otherwise, nice performances, and a nice film. Looking forward to seeing more from Genevieve Clay-Smith and the rest of the cast,
