Always enjoying this series very much. I didn’t know that drag queens are illegal in Tennessee! The marvels of this huge country. I liked 123 a lot, despite being a little confused as well about the pyramid… new pyramids… time..? Not very clear. And thanks for mentioning the history of “f¥ck”, very interesting too! The Italian language has about 10 times the swearwords of English, also because of local dialects, and their origins are lost in the myst of medieval times…

Yes, 123 still mystifies me, as does Tennessee. I think I'm going to have to learn Italian, just to keep up on my swear words.

I tried hard to follow a line of thought through 123 and failed too, although I liked those pyramids that he decides are nothing novel, nothing strange. Loved the little discursion around fuck. But I have swived now to use instead.

What an amazing session! Sonnet 123 sounds a bit like a distance relationship, as if they were meeting at a bar again, and the pyramids are an argument that the beloved is building up, like the saying of an elephant in the room, only for the narrator to say we've been here before, and in the second quatrain: we could play "this is a new amazing argument" even if we both know that isn't rue, to the third quatrain's: somewhat you're always on the run, presenting an argument and then having to go before there's a chance to talk it through or play this is something new. And in the end I'll be here again, even if you keep playing this weird game and cut any reaction I might have to this off... Maybe. Just a theory. And I agree with you: It's not a good look.

I love your envisioning this of a couple at a bar. That's the first really good interpretation of the pyramids I've heard, and I'm going with it!

@@TootightLautrec Haha! Thinking about it, a pub would be more fitting. Not sure when bars were invented...

“Not in a good way” Etymology of of F*ck was enlightening. The Irish in the sticks story was particularly titillating. 122 does seem like quite a snarky sonnet 123 is odd. I think the simplest interpretation is that his love won’t change even after death, but that doesn’t make sense in context of other sonnets. Maybe Will had had his brains f*cked out and suffered temporary memory loss.🤓

I messed up the Irish etymology story: the couple were put in the stocks "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge In the Nude", and on the sign above them in the stocks was written "FUCKIN". I like your interpretation of 123 best!

An interesting pair of sonnets here. I don’t know.. but I think sonnet 123 is as if a big argument has happened and the beloved has flung an accusation ‘you have changed!’. The ‘No’ feels shouted. ‘ I haven’t changed’. In arguments we can over exaggerate and the pyramids feel like he was plucking something out of the air.. and using them to say we create crazy meaning to them now that wasn’t there before. And ‘ I think your memory is flawed. You have false memory I am as I always have been’ I don’t know but it seems to me that it is an incredulous arm waving row. Ps historically ….fuck should spoken as ‘Mc fuckedy fuck fuck’ it is probably Scottish

Your characterization would be fabulous to watch on a stage, and would work wonderfully. From this point forward, I shall always say "McFuckedy Fuck Fuck," at every opportunity!

What an odd couple of sonnets. I can imagine that Young Lover's writing was surprisingly good and that didn't bring joy to the narrator.

I found the callousness of 122 rather shocking, and then to have 123's strange argument about not changing follow it, made it even worse--or better, I suppose, if we thank Shakespeare for giving us more to invent on our own.
