This dance piece is a fusion of Bharatanatyam(choreographed by Surya Jade Edakunni) and Odissi(choreographed by Divya Rath). The idea was to show both strong, Tandava, and soft, Laasya, elements of Shakti.
Shakti is divine feminine energy personified as Goddesses. This piece uses the stark differences between Bharatanatyams’ angular ridged steps and postures and Odissis’ soft movements and intricate footwork. Shakti has several forms, those depicted in this video are Goddess Aranyani (Akruti Desai), Goddess Kaali(Surya Jade Edakunni) , Goddess Mathangi(Divya Rath), Bhuvaneshwari Devi(Niranjana Rajagopalan). Goddess Aranyani and Goddess Mathangi display more Laasya aspects whereas Goddess Kaali and Bhavneshwari devi display more Tandava aspects, but all are shown with the two elements in different ways and ratios. The Goddesses' also show the watcher the beauty of a woman; her feet, her hands, her neck and her face.
