Danke, alles sehr hilfreich was du hier machst.

I recently came across the Shakuhachi on a videogame called Ghost of Tsushima. It's set in 1278 featuring a young Samari. By this timeline, I'd imagine his flute would be the 6-holed Shakuhachi called Kodai? In the story, his mother taught him how to play, and he continues to do so throughout the game at various shrines to honor her and the world around him. It's such a lovely and peaceful sound. I've never played wind instruments in my life, however I have blown into as many jugs or bottles I could get my hands on for as long as I can remember. I came upon your videos through suggestions but I am so glad to have this knowledge and history to move forward with. I'm still trying to figure out if I should attempt to make one, or if I could purchase one for a reasonable price. I am young and on a budget, but eager to learn so I might try to make one! Anyway, thank YOU for making these videos !
@MarkusGuhe

Thanks; it’s great to hear the videos are useful! Quite a few people seem to have heard of the shakuhachi because of the Ghost of Tsushima, and yes, historically the modern form of the flute only developed with the komuso, so that’s quite a bit later. As for building or buying, if you can live with a PVC air resin flute, you’ll have a much easier time starting out. To make a good flute you really have to be able to test it during the making process, which in turn means you need to play it. 🙂 But if you enjoy crafting one, that can be a lot of fun too!

Very nice video! Right now, I am working with a carpenter friend so we can make a Shakuhachi by ourselves. I've become very interested in this instrument recently and since I don't have enough money at hand to get myself even a cheap one, but I found some very useful tutorials online that explain how to make a very basic Shakuhachi. I've been a guitar player since 2008, so I am very familiar with the pentatonic scales and many exotic ones, like the hirajoshi. Since this is the very first time I'll fabricate one, I don't expect perfection haha, but I hope I can nail that sweet and soothing sound at least, so I could use it just for fun and meditation :)

@@MarkusGuhe wonderful to read your message, yes, its really tricky. A great idea might be to play a few pieces slowly and see how to close the fingers, which you can then copy. Just a bit in Japanese style for those who can't read Japanese notations. I haven't seen anything like that yet. With Daniel you can see the Japanese notes, but without Japanese you can't do anything. At least in the beginning you need a teacher to guide you.

Good video! So, how long do they last? Organic material with moisture being blown through it every day... must damage the mouth-piece no? Should you have more than one and rotate them? Do they vary in cost? How much do good ones cost? Are some more suitable for beginners? Can they lose their tuning through warping or cracking? Are the "best" ones made in Japan? Which artist or companies make the best ones? How long do they take to learn to play? Thanks!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 10 ай бұрын
Thanks! 🙏 Depends, but many last hundreds of years. There is no mouth piece; humidity is essential to keep the bamboo happy (it's a grass, not wood). No. Yes, widely. Depends on what you consider good - £€$1000 and up. Just don't get a cheap one from eBay or A. No. No, there are good makers outside Japan. Depends on your needs/school; mine are by Miura Ryuho. Getting a sound: a few minutes; learning to play: a lifetime.

I really liked the video, you're good at explaining and you seem very kind. I put a bid on a Shakuhachi on e-bay, there is a guy up on the Sunshine Coast, here in Australia, he makes them himself. He's funny, because in his videos, he's got little elf ears, and the children also have elf ears, I thought it was so sweet. If nobody bids higher, it'll be mine on Friday. Hence I might need lessons. I do have a question: I assume it would be good for one's singing, because of greater breath control? Just wondering if the muscle memory for playing the flute would interfere with the muscles needed in singing, for example, lifting the palate at the back? I've had some basic singing lessons, it's actually quite tricky if one wants to do it right?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words! 🙏 The technique for playing shakuhachi is actually similar to singing, not just the breath control but also controlling your voice box, so I think either will benefit the other. Is there a book that you know of that I could do more research on the traditional Japanese music notation? A book that actually teaches you how to read it along with the different scales and symbols?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethany, Excellent question! 😁 I'm assuming you're asking about shakuhachi notation - other traditional Japanese instruments have different notation systems. I'm actually looking through some introductory shakuhachi books for beginners for one of my next videos, so stay tuned! 🙂 But in short: Shakuhachi notation is a big mess, very inconsistent and every school and every player has his/her own system. (In contrast to Western staff notation, shakuhachi notation is not 'a thing in and of itself' but just a memorisation aid.) Most notation follow either the Tozan or Kinko school (the two big shakuhachi schools). A classic for an introduction to Kinko is Christopher Yohmei Blasdel's book 'The Shakuhachi, A Manual for Learning'. I'm not so familiar with Tozan. If you have any specific question, feel free to get in touch!

After studying Shakuhachi for two days, I decided to give up and couldn't blow. Finally, I chose the recorder Tin Whistle

Tin whistle is also a nice instrument! 🙂 For starting shakuhachi I always recommend you ask a more experienced player to show you the fundamentals. It takes a while but is not difficult as such.

I would consider the Shakuhachi a straight up instrument as a pentatonic dorian instrument or atleast in D dorian for the one you shown off. 9:39... Not really, stop comparing a soprano to a Shakuhachi, I would say that the Shakuhachi is comparable in hole size to a tenor or a bass, but more like the tenor. An instrument that plays in dorian as the fundamental scale.

Well, shakuhachi 'natively' plays a minor pentatonic scale (not Dorian). Sorry if I touched a sore spot in the video; the main point is that shakuhachi has a meri/kari system of which half-holing is really only a small part. As to sizes of finger holes: the holes on the shakuhachi are actually bigger than on recorders, but it's true, length-wise a standard shakuhachi is closer to a tenor recorder. (I just didn't have one at hand when I made the video.)

@@MarkusGuhe What I mean is that it plays D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D. Rather than bflat which would land it in D minor.... Dorian is a minor scale, though pentatonic scale seems too limiting... The holes don't seem much bigger than a bass recorder I own. I own a Hopf bass recorder, It has open holes through out it, with a german fingering system with no F sharp key. This is a vintage model for some context. Therefore, I want to make it clearer on the context. I do find the Shakuhachi's holes seems to remind me of a tenor recorder in length, but in the holes like a basset in F. I'm surprised the shakuhachi doesn't have a contrabass member, but it was exclusive to monks for a long time. I always find it fascinating how many always manage to convergently make their own flutes with similar plans How asia and Europe both have transverse flutes of their own. How Asia has the Ocarina, but Europe had the recorder. I just wished the recorder had the same developments as the western concert flute or most other types of flutes.

@@MaoRatto Sorry, I’m a bit confused - I’m only saying that the shakuhachi is tuned to a pentatonic minor scale (D, F, G, A, C on a 1.8). Of course, with meri/kari you can play any scale (7-tone, 12-tone, microtonal, ...), including Dorian scales. I have not yet seen a bass recorder first hand, so I take your word for it that the finger holes are quite big too. (But the instrument is also much longer than a standard size shakuhachi, right?) I’ve see very long shakuhachi, where the player actually had to use their big toe to close the bottom hole! 🙂 But I didn’t see/hear what the base pitch of that instrument was. I guess if you’d use keys and some mechanics it would be possible to make very low instruments, but then that’s quite limiting for a shakuhachi ... Yes, it seems that every culture has their own versions of vertical and traverse flutes, which are surprisingly similar in their basic construction. But then, flutes are quite probably one of the first types of instruments to emerge ...

Shakuhachi is not a recorder. A shakuhachi is way more deep than a recorder. Shakuhachi has deep cultural , meditative and spiritual purposes. But thank the west to make everything a crap.

You seem like a very nice person, but your playing, esp. meri kari is quite crude even for just a demo. Your explanation of Jiari shakuhachi is not complete. Yes, Jiari shakuhachi have a shiny coat of red or black Urushi lacquer, but, there is a tapered bore underneath that is made of powdered stone and a form of urushi. This makes a paste that when dry can be tapered with gauges to produce a much louder sound than the Jinashi flute. Not necessarily a nicer or more natural sound, but, a much louder, "ringing" sound. Tapering the bore is the real skill of the shakuhachi maker. This can also be done on Jinashi shakuhachi, esp. on longer flutes by taking away bamboo or adding glue and sawdust for example. Then a coat of shiny urushi can be applied or not. Anyway, I know you mean well and explain things in a nice manner. It's that much is lacking in your knowledge and playing that I'm sure you'll work on. Good luck.
