♪ If the Kids Are United ♪
For once in my life I've got something to say
I wanna say it now for now is today
A love has been given so why not enjoy
So let's all grab and let's all enjoy
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
Just take a look around you
What do you see
Kids with feelings like you and me
Understand him, he'll understand you
For you are him, and he is you
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
I don't want to be rejected
I don't want to be denied
Then its not my misfortune
That I've opened up your eyes
Freedom is given
Speak how you feel
I have no freedom
How do you feel
They can lie to my face
But not to my heart
If we all stand together
It will just be the start
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided

Silly old man

The silly old men are more often the greedy men in suits getting rich and fat on the backs of others. Pursey, on the other hand, is still fighting the good fight against all the nonsense of the status quo. You're never too old to live passionately, artistically and true to your ideals. I respect the old punk artists the most. They never sold out for a mind-numbing 9-5 existence working for the man.

@@528stevieethereal8 If you listen to a lot of punk which I do, the vast majority of the lyrics are about speaking truth to power, kicking against the pricks and generally standing up for common decency, which is sorely lacking in plenty of 'mature' people in suits. Punk is largely misunderstood. It is not all about thuggery as many people believe. Punk music may well be the most intelligent genre of music available. It's music that makes you think about, and question, the status quo. It is music for critical thinkers and people who are not afraid to speak their minds. I love the Canadian punk band D.O.A. Their frontman, Joey 'Shithead' Keithley, is 62 and still mostly performs the songs from his younger days. He's written two books, owns a record label and was elected a city councillor for the Green Party in British Columbia. From Wikipedia: "D.O.A. is known for its outspoken political opinions and has a history of performing for many causes and benefits. Its slogan is "Talk Minus Action Equals Zero." The band's lyrics and imagery frequently advocate anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech, and environmentalism".

@@robbysoaks yeah very good... Whatever... I was a 1st wave punk in the 70s...I know what its all about...it was actually about taking music back from the crappy long haired hippies and their progressive rock and going back to rock&roll...thr was nothing political about it in 1977...just rock&roll...62& still shouting "if the kids are united we will never be divided"... I'm in my 50s and I'd be seriously worried about myself if I still thought the way I did in 1977...You'll understand what I'm saying when u grow up

@@528stevieethereal8 First off D.O.A. started in 1977 (Vancouver, Canada had a huge punk scene). I agree with you that punk was partly about taking music back from the crappier, more vacuous varieties (they hated disco too!), but to suggest that it was nothing more than rock and roll is just wrong. If it was just rock and roll, which had been done before, then why did the Establishment shit their pants? Well, clearly because the old guard felt threatened by the meteoric popularity of a KIND of rock and roll music that had never been this pointed and venomous ever before on such a scale. The Sex Pistols, for example, couldn't have been more anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian! Punk in the seventies was first and foremost a movement and if you fail to see that, debating with you is probably an exercise in futility. Indeed, NO FUTURE for you and me!!! There are countless documentaries on the punk phenomenon/movement. You glibly respond 'whatever' to my post, but exactly what part of it don't you agree with? Sham 69's 'If The Kids Are United' carries a message of hope and empowerment to the younger generations. Listen to ALL the lyrics. It's about young people seeing their commonalities, coming together, making their voice heard and standing up for what they believe in. I know it's hard to fathom, but the old people in power (which comes from MANY directions) don't always have the best interest of 'the kids' at heart! Take the most glaring modern-day example of gross negligence that is global warming. We've known about this for over 30 years and yet we've done very little to stop its progress. Punk music is just as relevent and necessary as ever and I think it's great that Pursey is still chanting that the kids need to come together against the powers that be. I think truly growing up, as you seem so keen to talk about, is largely about looking out for other people other than yourself. Something a lot of 'mature grown-ups' haven't yet learned to do.
