If I had to design the shaman, I'd create them as the more buff and debuff style of magic-user. I'd have the subclasses be the Witchdoctor, the elemental, and perhaps the Runecarver. I'd make the unique trait of the Shaman to be able to Ritual Cast any spell they get, by adding 10 min to its casting time. Each subclass would then have a good number of extra spells that thematically make sense added to the pool.

The biggest trouble would having a shaman be distinct enough from a druid. Possibly even having a druid subclass could work as a shaman.

Very fascinating information, thanks for your input. As a long time WoW veteran and Shaman main and Druid alt that played that game extensively, I've always wondered about DnD.

A good shaman subclass for druid would be one that removes the focus on wild-shape. That's a DRUID thing. When I think "shaman", I don't think of turning into a RAWRBEAR and attacking people. Honestly, Wildfire druid comes really close imo - perhaps just flavor the Wildfire druid to not be FIRE and be "Elemental" in exchange for loss of the ability to shapeshift. Add Summon Elemental/LightningBolt etc in place of things like "Plant Growth" (maybe even make them unavailable for "shamans", trading elemental power for a reduced connection to plants,animals etc).

Shaman and Druid are very similar even in the real word, because the main difference between both is that one is from North America or Africa tribes when the other is from Celtic culture. But one thing tthey can make to differer a DnD Shaman class from the Druids is making it a Half-Caster, then build the class' features around it. That works to distinguish Paladins from Clerics, then i think would work for Shamans and Druids.

I feel like you may need to look at Ross Leisner's version of the Shaman class. From what I can tell it does actually fit much better with real world shamanism and has some pretty cool abilites with a special emphasis on Ritual Casting.

I forgot to mention, i play my Wildfire druid based on animism. Works great and makes it so much more fun to play, knowing where your powers come from.. The DM allows me some freedom in the spell description as long as i stick to the spell mechanics. He is less of a hermit and more of a real world person even feeling at home in cities (where the spirits are just a little different)

funnily enough, I've had an idea for a Shaman class for a while now that is ment to be a pact magic user that makes many pacts with small spirits and can make implements (divided into types: weapons, totems, trinkets, focuses, etc) using various different options to modify an item to give them magical effects by binding spirits into them; like givving them permanent shilelag or a use of cone of cold or an aura when activated or the like they also prepare their spells and have ritual casting, as well as a feature that lets them cast spells from their subclass (and a selection of personal spells) for free a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus minus the levels of the spells cast (so at max level they could cast 6 first level spells, or one sixth level spell, and yes they get 6th level spells specifically for this feature haha, but nothing beyond 6th)

So, something I have been thinking about, I would make a shaman be a subclass of Cleric that would just give it more nature link.

The same argument against shamans "because we already have druids" could have been used against druids because we already had clerics. In the end, that didn't stop the druid and I can't see why it should stop the shaman. In the end, the three priestly castes ARE all thematically distinct as long as you properly understand each.

"I've got friends on the other side" I think the best interpretation of the class is found in 2e player's options; spells and magic. 5e is too narrow and overly mechanized for the class to really work though. Shamans and other murky classes have to be restricted to less amateurish systems.

The point where you modify a druid enough to make him into a suitable shaman is the point where he's no longer recognizable as a druid, at which point there is no point not to make the shaman into his own class just as the druid himself is no longer a heavily-modified cleric, but his own thing. I'm utterly unconvinced that the shaman "could not be made into his own class", if we held the core classes to the same scrutiny we are holding the shaman to we'd have neither barbarians nor paladins. We'd just need a sufficiently angry & savage fighter or a sufficiently bulky & fanatical cleric to fill either role. Yet that didn't stop either class. We were robbed out of a shaman class in d&d, and for no real reason. Let me put this into simpler terms: a druid goblin or orc makes no (particular) sense as it does a wood elf, they could not be undestood as interchangeable with shamans.
