Shamrock Hotel Houston Destruction 1987

This is a short video of the destruction of the Shamrock Hotel by the Texas Medical Center in mid 1987. The reason given for the destruction of this Houston landmark, was the land was needed to expand the Medical Center. The Shamrock was torn down, and the lot paved over. As of August 2009, the lot is still empty. The parking garage and ball room facility were left standing, and are now being considered for demolition. In 1987 there were numerous groups that wanted to lease the building to operate it as a hotel or even an assisted living center. The Texas Medical Center declined these business offers.
The history of Houston architecture is written in asphalt.

Rex Solomon: You are so right. The Shamrock was just another great icon of Houston along with the Warwick. Thank God we still have the Lancaster and the Rice Hotel. We are slowly losing our jewels. Good Job/Keep us informed.

Yes, Houston tears down anything over 20 years old. I performed there when it was The Shamrock Hilton. I met many older Hollywood stars -- Ruby Keeler, Kathryn Grayson, Dana Andrews, Vincent Price, Paul Henried, Butterfly McQueen, Ray Bolger, and Gene Tierney.

I was at the last St. Patrick's party before the hotel closed. What a night! I miss this place so much.

So very true. Houston does not honor it's historic building. It is all so quick to destroy historical icons. You have to ask why a city so rich in history does not want to build around it. I grew up in Houston and always questioned the mindset.

I was just interested to see the place where our family used to go back in the '60's for a Western Auto mechandise show. It's a shame this place was demolished, as it used to be a landmark on Houston's south Main street. Western Auto's warehouse was also in Houston, so transporting the new merchandise there was no real problem. 🥲
